to think that re-usable loo roll is a horrible idea?

OK, I know it's environmentally friendly, but am I being unreasonable to think that re-usable loo roll is the most disgusting concept?

OP posts:
Tommy · 06/11/2009 14:08

surely no more disgusting than reusable nappies?

Or sanitary towels?

paisleyleaf · 06/11/2009 14:10

I used reusable nappies, and use cloth sanitary towels too, so am not that squeamish about the loo roll idea.

Morloth · 06/11/2009 14:11

Sounds fine to me. I won't use them because I am too bloody lazy, but I agree with Tommy - what is the difference between those and nappies etc?

ginormoboobs · 06/11/2009 14:12

I use cloth nappies on my kids and wipe their bums with reusable wipes.
They do clean better (mine are terry one side and fleece the other).
I can't say that I would ever use them though. Maybe in an absolute emergency.
I don't really want to open up the nappy bucket and see a shit smeared wipe that my husband had popped in it

humanfraggle · 06/11/2009 14:12

mud I'm with you on this one, i think that's a pretty horrid thought...

GrimmaTheNome · 06/11/2009 14:13

Not such a bad idea for wee - would balk at other uses. But buying special multicoloured cloths is a bit - if you're seriously green you'd raid your ragbag. Sounds like ideal second life for underpants

violethill · 06/11/2009 14:14

As long as each family member has their own supply I can't see a problem.

Wouldn't fancy wiping my lady bits with something that my DH has wiped his shitty arse on, even after a hot wash!

humanfraggle · 06/11/2009 14:14

have just looked at this page in more details - you can even customise the fabric and have photos printed onto them..

Hmmm... now, who's face would I want to put onto toilet roll?

paisleyleaf · 06/11/2009 14:14

ginormoboobs, rule no 1 would have to be a good rinse clean before it goes into the netty bag in the bucket.

paisleyleaf · 06/11/2009 14:15

and a family colour code perhaps

PercyPigPie · 06/11/2009 14:18

Glad it's not just me HumanFraggle!

Can't really believe it's more eco friendly to wash and dry a whole cotton pad for wiping after a wee though

Undercovamutha · 06/11/2009 14:25

ROFL at this thread. Maybe I would consider for the DCs (not opposed to resuable wipes so no difference really) - but NOT for DH. Ugh!

GrungeBlobPrimpants · 06/11/2009 14:31

pmsl at the customised fabric

I love the way you can also use them to clean your glasses ... so tehy get a bit of brown veneer sun protection, presumably ..

StealthPolarBear · 06/11/2009 14:35

"You can also customize these wipes in prints from over a hundred flannel fabrics, see the bottom for details."
my first thought was "your face...my arse" but i see thats been said!
lol at see the bottom fpor details
wonder how many accidentally end up being flushed - hard habit to break!

StealthPolarBear · 06/11/2009 14:36

why would you customise them? A lovely pic of MIL and FIL??

PercyPigPie · 06/11/2009 16:33

They'd make lovely Christmas presents wouldn't they ... pictures of the grandchildren, the dog ...

You could use them as coasters if you ran short too (well boiled, obviously).

OP posts:
LaurieScaryCake · 06/11/2009 16:38

Also can't believe that boil washing is as environmentally friendly as the toilet paper going to a waste processing plant.

StealthPolarBear · 06/11/2009 16:42

I'd imagine they recommend hand wash only and line drying

StealthPolarBear · 06/11/2009 16:42

in cool water, with a small amount of non bio powder.
Or surface clean only

paisleyleaf · 06/11/2009 16:53

Laurie, ikwym. It all gets a bit tricky with being green. Like driving in your 4x4 to they bottle bank. I thought that when I was washing nappies - but I guess that one is more about landfill than energy. The toilet paper thing'll be more about the trees. Although you can get recycled paper (at a higher cost).

reservejudgement · 06/11/2009 17:05

No, I do use washable nappies, wipes and cloth sanpro on occasion but I would draw the line at washable loo roll.

madamearcati · 06/11/2009 17:51

Gross !

liath · 06/11/2009 17:57

Ooh, that makes me feel queasy despite having been a cloth nappy person. I was at a ruined Roman fort last week and apparently they all shared sponges on sticks to wipe their arses - rinsed between users - yak!

InMyLittleHead · 06/11/2009 18:03

Umm.. it's not too bad. Would be OK with it just for wee, but perhaps not for poo...

hocuspontas · 06/11/2009 18:12

I'm just trying to picture a family of five using these....

And also whose job it will be to collect the bucket loads and wash them.

The smell's bad enough after my lot have used the bathroom, let alone getting up close and personal to the source.
