To dislike long(er) hair on boys?

My dd and I were on the internet yesterday, she was watching over my shoulder as I read some threads on here. She asked me if the person 2nd from left in the Clarkes advert at the top of the page was a boy or girl? I said I thought it was a boy but wasn't sure. She said she only likes boys with boyish haircuts, I agreed. AIBU? I think boys with longer hair look untidy and the mothers are being a bit lazy. She has a boy at her school who has the longest rat tail I've ever seen, it comes down to his bottom and just looks awful. There's another one who looks like my dd with a long bob. She's jealous of the latter though, his is thicker than her nine hairs and a nit.

I detest shaved heads on small boys. It makes them resemble concentration camp inmates or football hooligans. Neither being an attractive look.

Being of the old hippy persuasion and having constant fights with my mother over every aspect of my appearance, I was determined that my dcs would make their own decisions about clothes & hair. Unfortunately, this went all counter-productive on me and having got ds2's hair to a lovely length by the time he was 4, the reactionary little git rebelled and insisted on being taken to the barber because people kept "saying I'm a GIRL!"

Curiousmama · 30/10/2009 14:19

I'm a hairstylist and ds1 has longish hair, in a great style that suits him (according to everyone who knows him) much more than short hair. It is styled though. I'm not keen on unstyled hair on anyone, boys or girls. You see plenty of girls with scraggy hair.

Can't really say you're unreasonable though as it's a preference.

Meandacat · 30/10/2009 14:31

I just looked at the Clark's ad and I think the little boy's long hair is totally cool. In no way does he look scruffy to me. It's all about the individual, right? I'd personally much prefer my kid to look like that than have a boring crew cut or (worse) a shaved head - sorry, I think that make some kids look like little thugs. But that's just my opinion. By the same token, my liking for longer hair on boys has nothing to do with laziness or fashion - just my own, personal taste.

MrsChemist · 30/10/2009 14:51

On adult mean, at least, I find long hair more masculine than short hair. DH has long hair and I think he looks manly (and sexy).

CheerfulYank · 30/10/2009 14:59

YANBU, I don't like long hair on little boys or men either. But to make assumptions about the laziness of their mothers is UIMO. It's just their preference I'm sure.

hocuspontas · 30/10/2009 15:42

I was looking round in assembly the other day at the boys' haircuts and was making sweeping generalisations. (Don't shoot me - I was bored!). The boys with long (styled) hair had mothers who were stylish and cared about their looks and trendy dads. The boys who had highlights (boak) had mothers who were hairdressers. The boys with earrings (double boak) all had dads with earrings. The boys with tennis ball or mohican type haircuts had dads with the same.

I didn't know whether the hair styles were the boys' choices or mainly ther parents. These were infants and the majority had short cuts - probably only 20% are described above.

I came to the conclusion that the boys with long hair seem to be more conscious about their looks and the rest don't seem to give a toss. I think I prefer short hair but I've got 3 dds so I don't know how I'd feel about a ds of my own!

alana39 · 30/10/2009 15:43

I'd love my boys to have shorter hair (aged 5 and 6 - and it's not really long, but definitely needs a cut) but have decided lesser of two evils is having to condition and comb in the shower rather than run round the house after them with scissors / clippers or risk another scene in the barbers / hairdressers. Not lazy in this respect (unlike many others ) as I do have to comb through conditioner almost every day.

It's bad enough having to keep nails short...

TrickOrTreatersDragOnYourNoose · 30/10/2009 15:44

you can have whatever preference for boys hair that you like. However, YABU to make judgemental comments about the parenting of long-haired boys.

Believe me, there's nothing lazy about maintaining DSs long hair cuts. Before I could clipper it off every few weeks and didn't have to dry it. Now it requires visits to the salon and blowdrying

TrickOrTreatersDragOnYourNoose · 30/10/2009 15:46

BTW, the long hair is their choice, not mine. Should I force my choices onto them?

troutpout · 30/10/2009 15:53

yanbu to dislike it
ya (of course) bu to think it reflects on the parenting

Ds's hair is very course and grows outward...i wish it would look nice long but it doesn't

sherby · 30/10/2009 16:00

My ds is 2 and has quite long hair

I just can't be bothered to cut it

LadyOfTheFlowers · 30/10/2009 16:02

Wonder what sort of parent I am? I have one with very straight so quite short hair and one with 'pageboy' wavy hair.
(Pic of which I have just added to profile)
He has quite a wide forehead and doesn't 'look right' without it.

I get loads of compliments on it and he LOVES it, he is 3.

cornsilk · 30/10/2009 16:02

Thank goodness I had boys. I am the laziest slattern you could ever meet. I really hope they become keen swimmers 'cos then I won't have to wash them either.

Saying that - I don't know how you look at peoples' photos anymore...

mwahahamwahahallyroger · 30/10/2009 16:04

Sexist codswallop.

hocuspontas · 30/10/2009 16:07

To look at profiles the poster's name has to be underlined. Your name isn't for some reason

GhoulishFan · 30/10/2009 16:09

My DS (7) wants hair like Troy.... I let him and now it looks like this which really suits him - much more than a short back n sides

I don't know if it's long or short... it's kind of in between!

OrmIrian · 30/10/2009 16:10

Yes you are.

Glitterknickaz · 30/10/2009 17:11

DS1 prefers to have his hair short, DS2 prefers his long

I hate shaved heads

Twintummy · 30/10/2009 18:15

It's harder work to have little boys with long hair but they look bloody gorgeous with their long blonde hair!

NoNameNameyChangey · 30/10/2009 18:17

You are being silly, personal preference is one thing, judging others off the back of your prejudice is another.

YABU.

BooingTheBestICan · 30/10/2009 19:04

I have just this morning taken ds,3yrs old, for a haircut,i have it styled every 6 weeks & it is longish at the back with a swept over fringe.

He loves his hair & always gets comments on it,it is lovely & thick & along with his long eyelashes i think he looks gorgeous.

YANBU to have an opinion on peoples haircuts but you are VVVVVU to say i am lazy cos my ds has long hair.

scottishmummy · 30/10/2009 19:27

some wee boys look great with long hair

mumtofour · 31/10/2009 00:47

I have three boys who are now all teenagers. When little they all had short hair styles. They have all now had various lengths of hairstyles. Long hair can look just as good on a boy as a girl and at the end of the day it is personal preference of the individual. In the often strictness of society today experimenting with your hairstyle can be a way the youth of today can express themselves. Assumptions should not be made of the individual or their parents due to the length of their hair.. thats crazy !
