To dislike long(er) hair on boys?

My dd and I were on the internet yesterday, she was watching over my shoulder as I read some threads on here. She asked me if the person 2nd from left in the Clarkes advert at the top of the page was a boy or girl? I said I thought it was a boy but wasn't sure. She said she only likes boys with boyish haircuts, I agreed. AIBU? I think boys with longer hair look untidy and the mothers are being a bit lazy. She has a boy at her school who has the longest rat tail I've ever seen, it comes down to his bottom and just looks awful. There's another one who looks like my dd with a long bob. She's jealous of the latter though, his is thicker than her nine hairs and a nit.

Its Leander, i think its beautiful, his mum was a bit of a romantic!

YANBU to have a preference for your children.

YABU to have a preference for other people's children.

Another lazy mum here hhmm. Maybe thats why DS took the scissors to his hair yesterday.

DS's hair is longer than that of your average 5yo but it suits him. He's had the "traditional" boys cut (short back and sides type) and it looks awful on him. Theres no way I'd let him have a no.2 cut or anything like that either.

Its always washed and brushed and he doesn't have a fringe over his eyes stopping him from seeing what he's doing so I can't see what the problem is. People often comment on how lovely his hair is too.

curiositykilled · 29/10/2009 09:13

OH and VVVU to say mothers of boys with long hair are lazy! Lol...

fartmeistergeneral · 29/10/2009 09:16

Oooh Leander! I'm imagining his long flowing locks, riding a horse like Legolas!

All 4 of my boys have long hair and I am not lazy or anything else (well maybe a bit!)

Ds1 is 19, DS2 is 17, DS3 is 12; it's their hair and they can do what they like with it. Around here, short hair = shaved with lines cut in it and stuff and it means that you are a NED. My boys don't want to look like that or be mistaken for that, so they grow their hair. Fair enough. DS4 is almost 7 and at one point had waist length hair. He doesn't want little hair, is terrified of the hairdresser and wants to be like his brothers. Again, fair enough.

YANBU not to like it, but it isn't fair to make value judgements based on hair length.

posieparksherbroom · 29/10/2009 09:32

I like longer hair on a little boy (pre school) if their hair is curly, I loathe crew cut type styles on any boy under 7. I think if your ds is school age it's a bit unfair for him to have to field the 'are y ou a girl/boy?' question.

I think it is fine to like some styles and dislike others but not to assume everyone has the same reasons. My ds (9) has long hair through his own choice so it isn't a fashion statement on my part and it is definately more work than a shorter style (glad the OP retracted that bit!). I have no idea why he wants long hair as most boys in his school have the usual short back and sides (as I used to do with him before he expressed an opinion). It is straight too which makes it hard to find a decent, boyish cut.

Having said that, I don't really feel strongly about it and if he wanted a style I really hated, I would probably say no so I do think it is reasonable to have likes and dislikes. Also, I probably let him look more scruffy now (grass-stained jeans with holes etc) because he doesn't like being mistaken for a girl. I know girls can be grass-stained and scruffy too - I'm just trying to maximise the traditional boy signals in the hope people might look past the long hair.

YANBU especially older boys, teens and men, i do not like long hair at all on them, when they are toddler yes but older no.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 29/10/2009 09:41

OK, I am beginning to see that I am a touch U about the whole thing. I think that because we are in Switzerland and on the whole the Swiss are very buttoned up and correct with regard to most things, I find it peculiar that my dd's school has such a bunch of scruff bags in it. I am not advocating a one size fits all hair style (although a school uniform would be marvellous), more a brush your hair you look like a tramp approach from the school.

Bon Jovi looks much better with short hair than long, and Jamie Afro could use some clippers too and as for the used to be kid band Hanson, oh dear they would look much more handsome with a hair cut.

Morloth · 29/10/2009 09:43

Oh, I don't know: boy with long hair looks OK to me.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 29/10/2009 10:19

Morloth, not for me thanks. I do admit a liking for the scots man who presents coast. He is probably the only one though.

I think it looks great on some boys.

Sunshinemummified · 29/10/2009 10:36

My DS has long hair because I like it and so does he - not because I'm lazy. He still goes to the hairdresser as much as his friends with shorter hair. And neither do I think it looks untidy.

Morloth · 29/10/2009 10:39

I get DS's hair cut really short because I am lazy. Can't be arsed with washing and brushing and all the rest of it. So every half term/holiday he gets taken to the barbers and has a (very) short back and sides and quite short on the top as well.

I love that bowl cut thing with the smooth shiny hair and an undercut (choir boy?) but DS has hair like wire so was never going to happen.

beaniesinthepumpkinagain · 29/10/2009 11:06

YANBU to have your own opinion, but you are being VU to assume boys with long hair dont have haircuts and there mums are lazy!

My ds has longish hair, it suits him, i most certainly am not lazy when im washing it every morning and combing it so he looks neat and tidy.

I did aibu thread a few weeks ago, here about keeping it long and the general consensus was its always mums of girls who have something to say about it!

minouminou · 30/10/2009 13:59

Not unreasonable to dislike it, if it ain't your bag, it ain't your bag.
DS has amazing, long blond hair, and until recently was mistaken for a girl daily - he's just turned 3, and is starting to look more boyish in his face, so it's happening less now.
I'm glad the OP realised it's harder work than a crew cut - I don't like short hair on boys, but I'd never say so to anyone in RL, as it's just not on.
I should imagine as he gets older it'll get a bit shorter (it was halfway down his back until July, when he had 4 inches lopped off), and hopefully he'll always want it longish, but obv it's up to him once he's old enough to say so.
Was reading the other thread where someone said "Someone wanted a girl" .... just makes me think...did the 1960's never actually happen?
Think I might teach DS to break into "Age Of Aquarius" at fuddy-duddies - just to freak them out a bit more!
Have to say, though, I've only had one overtly negative reaction to his hair, which was actually quite rude in a classically passive-aggressive North Oxford manner.
Most folks don't really care, I think, and DP and I are a pair of scruffs not exactly fashionistas, so long hair fits in.

cakeywakey · 30/10/2009 14:02

My DH had longer hair than I did when we first met . Yes YABU, hair does not the man (or Mum) make.

Wilts · 30/10/2009 14:06

Both of my Ds's have longish sort of shaggy hair, I like it and can't imagine it short again.

They do have it cut fairly often as Ds2 has the worlds fastest growing fringe and Ds1 has hair that grows out and up rather than down, so it needs keeping tidy.

sodit · 30/10/2009 14:06

ds1 has really thick curly hair and it looks really messy if goes longer than grade 6 so his is shaved. ds2 has lovely blond curls so his is long.

minouminou · 30/10/2009 14:11

That's it, Sodit....you do whatever works/looks/washes and combs best.
When I said i don't like short hair on boys...really I meant I wouldn't like it on MY DS...long blond hair on a child is just beautiful, and it seems a shame to lop it all off just cos of convention.
