I know people get inspired by films for baby names but isn't it just...trying too hard, to be whimsical and bohemian and classy when in fact hundreds of sturdy English girls are now lumbered with the name Amelie...

It's not about the name, it's a very pretty name, more about the 'try hard' aspect, I actually heard a girl called by 'Amelie Mello' yesterday (like in the film)

Ok flame me now, you know lots of elfin dainty pixie like Amelies and it isn't the slightest bit pretentious...

I like it, but then I know a lovely amelie

Haven't read the whole thread but I feel the same about Mathilde for English girls - it drives me nuts when people spell my daughter's name that way - not only does it show that they haven't bothered to notice it's not spelt that way (good old English spelling MATILDA), it makes me view them as irritatingly pretentious!

I met a gorgeous (and I really do mean gorgeous) little girl called Hebe the other day. At first I though it was Phoebe but I was soon put right. Love it (apparently her sisters are called Rose, Lily and Poppy which made me )

I don't like the name Darcey but love the name Freya. Have never seen it as airy fairy whispy (probably because both the Freyas I know of are tall strong well built lovely girls.

I quite like Amelie.

Can I sound out the name Anais, pronounced without the s sound, yes I know it is a perfume, on you without starting my own thread?

Sorry to hijack.

artlesschaos · 24/10/2009 19:15

God I hate the name Freya. It reminds me of a scary female Gestapo guard..I know it's not German but it sounds it.
As for Anais....mmm...dunno..probably not.
A bit Essex/Kent kid of over-faked tanned wannabee yummy mummy in knock-off Ugg boots but what do I know?!!!

Morloth · 24/10/2009 19:16

Jeez with some of the monstrosities kid's get lumbered with Amelie seems just fine in comparison.

AuntieMaggie · 24/10/2009 19:19

I agree with JaMmRocks - I love the name Amelie. I wouldn't assume it had been used because of the film, which is quite old now isn't it? (I didn't like it).

I'd probably consider the name but then I like european names and DP's parents live in france.

MaggieBruja · 24/10/2009 20:08

Aunt Maggie , how is Sylvie perceived in France? I really liked it and all GB people I ran it past said oooh niiiice. but the two french people I asked said, eeeees an 'airdresseur name. with a wrinkle of the nose. I took that to mean it was like their Tracey.
