I know people get inspired by films for baby names but isn't it just...trying too hard, to be whimsical and bohemian and classy when in fact hundreds of sturdy English girls are now lumbered with the name Amelie...

It's not about the name, it's a very pretty name, more about the 'try hard' aspect, I actually heard a girl called by 'Amelie Mello' yesterday (like in the film)

Ok flame me now, you know lots of elfin dainty pixie like Amelies and it isn't the slightest bit pretentious...

I love Amelie,
don't think it is tryhard at all..

if we all avoided all names that were in films or famous actors we would be short of alot of brilliant names.

stakethroughtheheartofgold · 24/10/2009 12:36

the film was really annoying.

CherylVole · 24/10/2009 12:37

not as bad as " joshie"
the worst in the world

madamearcati · 24/10/2009 13:15

Personally I think naming a child after any virtue is just begging for trouble !

KiBe · 24/10/2009 15:15

I like it, but then I called my dd Matilda, which i'm still not sure isn't a bit twee too, but honestly does suit her

Jujubean77 · 24/10/2009 15:20

Totally agree with OP. Passable if French origin but TOTALLY cringe and so common now, why?

MaggieBruja · 24/10/2009 16:47

I hate when people on the name boards say ooh I know a Bertha and she is gorgeous and her parents are Brazilian vegetarian actors, as though that counts for sh1t...

bibbitybobbitycat · 24/10/2009 16:53

I don't cringe but I don't like it. I dislike all girls names that make them sound like little airy-fairy whisps of fluffiness (in particular Freya).

Twintummy · 24/10/2009 17:13

I think it's a lovely name.

verySCREEEAAAMlawn · 24/10/2009 17:16

More Amelies and Darceys round here than you can shake a stick at - not to my taste, but then why should people name their children to please me or anyone else?

DH always says it's lucky we never had girls - I'm not one for fluffy names and would probably have called the poor little blighter Bob or Alf.

JaMmRocks · 24/10/2009 17:23

YANBU to think it, but YABU (a bit) to start a thread about it, and upset people that have used it. Not that I have, btw.

Lavenderfleurs · 24/10/2009 17:26

Yes, think its mean to start this thread knowing that people have used this name for their little girls. Not like they can go back and change it is it? If someone was a bit sensitive they might always be wondering what people were thinking of the name after this.

fluffles · 24/10/2009 17:29

i know a baby amelie but her father is fluent in french and spends half the year there (ski instructor) and her GPs have retired there... i reckon she'll grow up a real francophile too

artlesschaos · 24/10/2009 17:55

I don't no...said in an English accent it's just not that pretty is it?
Mmm....
There are however loads more names I loathe...Harrison, Tyler, Paige, Maddison (particularly grim), Jordan, Reece, Ruby, Lola...Amelie is bloody lovely in comparison...in my humble opinion of course.

MaggieBruja · 24/10/2009 18:15

Darcey, is that considered french? I think it's awful. COuldn't understand when Kate Galloway chose it. Not that I'm au fait with her style or taste really, but I thought she'd pick something a bit less..... *&^%

fizzpops · 24/10/2009 18:16

bibbitybobbitycat - it's so funny you think that about Freya. I have always thought of it as a strong but pretty name.

I like Amelie too and wouldn't have worried about Grace for the reasons given as I associate it with grace in a religious sense.

MaggieBruja · 24/10/2009 18:22

I love Freya, Goddess of Fertility. Much stronger-sounding to my mind than Lily, Millie, Tilly, Ellie, Ella, Lola, Lila, Leila etc..

MintyCane · 24/10/2009 18:23

I like Amelie and Freya.

MaggieBruja · 24/10/2009 18:25

Gaia is Goddess of earth. Freya and Gaia would be nice together imo. not fairy-like! (I don't have a Freya btw)

Frrrightattendant · 24/10/2009 18:25

I'm surprised Darcey took off tbh, I mean Darcey Bussell is very beautiful and I like her but it rhymes with arsey! Asking for trouble!

MaggieBruja · 24/10/2009 18:26

YeS... it's not her real name either. Her real name is something like Laura or Susan or Lynne. Darcey was her mother's maiden name.

Frrrightattendant · 24/10/2009 18:28

I have gone off most girls' names with 'a' at the end.

There are thousands of Isabellas round here, I mean thousands. Do people not notice there are so many, or is it beginning to tail off now? I used to love it but it has kind of become so ubiquitous that I can't see its beauty any more. Like if you had a Harrods on every street iyswim. It would get boring.

No offence to mums of Isabellas btw

Frrrightattendant · 24/10/2009 18:28

Maggie - no way! Really?

MaggieBruja · 24/10/2009 18:30

it's marnie I think actually

MaggieBruja · 24/10/2009 18:31

Frrrightattendant, me too. My duaghter is NOT called Juliet, but I reallylike it now because it doesn't end in a. I like Phoebe too. Vivien, Margot. strong women's names that don't end in A.
