To think Lady Gaga is not appropriate music for a class of five year olds?

DD1's class are allowed to take in CD's to listen to during tidy up time. And of course she comes home and wants to watch the videos on TV and I know I'm an old fart but I don't think Lady Gaga is an appropriate role model. What's wrong with a bit of classical music, or something innocent like HSM? I'm prepared to get flamed for this, I admit I'm an old fart!

I was a bit at DDs Pop Party CD. She's 6, and it appears to be aimed at kids of a similar age. Lady Gaga's Poker Face is on it, complete with the middle bit which is always edited out on the radio, and goes like this:

I won't tell you that I love you
Kiss or hug you
cause I'm bluffin with my muffin

Cue questions from DD as to what bluffing is and why she's doing it with her muffin, and was it a Starbucks lemon and poppy seed or chocolate one?

A bit much, so no, YABU in my opinion.

mustrunmore · 19/10/2009 17:55

I've never really listened to the lyrics, even tho I hear it almost every day in gym classes! Am off to Youtube now! But, it has to be said that sevreral posters were right; the things we grew up singing were very borderline, but we didnt grow up warped.

Bleh · 19/10/2009 17:59

There's another Lily Allen song which is commonly played on the radio in non-English speaking countries. It's called f**k you. Very odd hearing it played nonchalantly on the radio. VERY odd.

No - YANBU, I don't like to see children under the age of about 8/9 listening to pop music - what's wrong with traditional childrens songs/nursey rhymes etc? Childhood is so short nowadays what's the rush with all the adult music? I would be furious if HSM or pop music was played in a reception class.

SomeGuy · 19/10/2009 18:03

My DS used to love singing along to 'My Humps' when he was about 3. DD who is 2, loves any kind of dance music. No big deal.

MotherOfSuburbia · 19/10/2009 18:11

On the HSM front - there are certainly a lot of things which are much more offensive (and I have seen it - the first one anyway). It"s just that even though there is no kissing really and certainly nothing worse - it is a whole world of emotions and separating boys and girls, making them grow up too soon - which I just think can wait. 8, 9, 10 yes. 4 year olds - no.
Also the OP did say that this was in school which surprises me. I obviously don"t get offended by what other parents choose to show and play to their kids but sanctioning it in school is another thing altogether. Surely they would know that there would be parents who would not agree with this and should err on the side of caution.

I am slightly to say that my dd LOVES Rockstar by Nickelback. However, she has no idea what most of the lyrics are and just hums along and the lyrics she does know are not bad and she doesn't know what they mean. Good job really! At least she has great taste!

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 18:45

Great taste? Are you still talking about Nickelback?

Hando · 19/10/2009 18:47

Hey! Nickelback are one of my favourite bands! They are fantastic!!!

I don't let dd hear lyrics to most of their songs though like "Animals" and "Something in your mouth"

IdrisTheDragon · 19/10/2009 18:50

Haven't listened knowingly to any Lady Gaga but it doesn't bother me too much what DS (5) and DD (4) listen to. Lily Allen (uncensored) version is on my ipod and they listen to that. And other "unsuitable" stuff I am sure.

I was abotu 8 when Like a Virgin was a hit and had no idea what it was going on about. Did think it was something to do with the Virgin Mary and the fact it was Madonna confused me a bit

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 18:51

Fantastic isn't the word I'd use but at least they're better than HSM.

IneedacleanerIamalazyslattern · 19/10/2009 19:06

Sourdough I know you got an answer but the bit that sounds like the bit you mean goes:

"Bigger and better and best"

And the Kings of Leon song is deafinately "you, your sex is on fire"

It has never occured to me to be bothered about half these songs, a lot of them are on my ipod and I have the radio on a lot in the day.
DD and DS both love dancing along to music in the house and they like the tunes rather than the lyrics most of which they don't understand anyway.

Ladyanonymous · 19/10/2009 19:08

I had Dizzee Rascal on in the car the other day whilst on the school run plus a "friend home for tea" and suddenly became more than aware of the lyrics of "Freaky Freaky"

MayorNaze · 19/10/2009 19:12

at primary school discos we used to sing along to the birdie song

"just a little bit of this and a little bit of that
and you (much much louder) shake your arse you dirty sod

i owuld die if my 7 year old sang that now!!!

mammyknowsbest · 19/10/2009 19:21

I know what you mean. Some of the lyrics are a bit wrong/strong when they are sung from the innocent mouths of babes

We often listen to the radio and the kids pick up on the songs really easily. I do however put a stop to them watching MTV etc. If I wanted soft porn at 11 oclock in the morning I'd subscribe to the Adult channel!!!!

I can remember singing Frankie goes to Hollywood " when you wanna come!!!" when I was little. Don't think my mam was too happy but I didn't have a clue what it meant at the time!!!!

TheHeadlessWombat · 19/10/2009 19:23

I used to dance to Ebeneezer Goode by The Shamen when I was a kid and would play it over and over. Neither my mother or I knew what it was really about.

In spite of that I'm normal, well relatively so.

poshsinglemum · 19/10/2009 19:25

love gaga-she's cool.

poshsinglemum · 19/10/2009 19:26

but mabe a bit rude for 5 yr olds

nightmareteamgirl · 20/10/2009 00:20

wannabe
Saw Lilly Allen earlier this year and her 14 year old niece was in crowd. At start she clearly announced she would be singing

'Banana, banana you, very very much' and LMAO
I think on the whole if you take a minor to see Lily Allen you deserve what they see, she isnt HSM is she?

shockers · 20/10/2009 18:38

Getorfmoiland nearly peed myself at your 'Alice' story!
