to report my in-laws to the DVLA

My in-laws are generally quite difficult people who consider themselves to be right all of the time. They have both had serious illnesses in the last year which they are slowly recovering from but they have been left with some physical and neurlogical problems which will affect their driving ability.
Although I understand how difficult it is to adapt I can't seem to get across to them that they will end up either killing themselves or another person if they continue to drive (and yes they are dangerous on the road).
Am I being unreasonable to call the DVLA and report them? they can then do an official test and prove their driving ability.
I realise I am at risk of alienating them even further by doing this, but my DH refuses to do it.

This bit is interesting: "CONFIDENTIALITY
When a patient has a condition which makes driving unsafe and the patient is either unable to appreciate this, or refuses to cease driving, GMC guidelines advise breaking confidentiality and informing DVLA. [GMC Confidentiality Handbook]" (Page 35 of the guide).

My GP friend was telling me only a couple fo weeks ago how heartbreaking it was to have to refuse to sign-off an old lady's licence, as she lived inthe middle of nowhere, with no ready access to public transport and her car really was her life-line to living independendtly, but she wasn't safe to drive*.

The troble is it is very condition specific

Grandad has none of those; yet he drives dangerously becuase he thinks it is his right. He is a know it all of the highest order and happily swerves at people if they are in his way or whatever; sadly ansty and hateful is not a listed condition.

I think people over a set age should have to take retests- pick up anyone unsafe to drive for whatever reason.

I really think everyone should have to retake their test every 10 years, and every year after 65. We have to renew our passports that often and the chances of our identity or nationality changing during that time are ridiculously slim. The chances of any number of factors affecting our ability to drive (new laws, more cars on road, more powerful vehicles, health and eyesight issues, getting into bad habits) in a 10 year period is extremely high.

It also seems crazy to me that someone who has passed their test in an automatic vehicle cannot legally drive a manual, but someone who passed their test 60 years ago can drive any car today... and the roads are nothing like they were back then, either. I'm sure there are a huge number of drivers who have never been taught the correct procedure in certain situations because they simply didn't exist when they were learning to drive, or features on the car (such as mirrors or indicators) which weren't standard on vehicles at that time.

I find it so frustrating because I'm a very catious and safe driver, but I have failed 3 driving tests so far (for very minor things, such as holding up traffic) and still don't have a license.

Anyway, YANBU, but I really think this is probably very common and should be looked at nationwide and tackled at route root.

YANBU. I couldn't live with myself if they injured someone and I'd done nothing.
