to not like the RSPCA and turn over when their adverts come on TV.

I will get flamed no doubt and I'm probably lighting the blue touch paper and then going off for some quality time with DH and leaving people to go demented but here's the crack:

I hate all these begging for money adverts on TV, for animals.

I want to give my money to abused children, great ormond street, breast cancer, other cancers etc.

I want to help poorly children, save daughters and mothers, sons, siblings, fathers, grandparents from diseases and death.

I do not want to house a rabbit or any other kind of animal.

I'm no animal lover as you may have gathered and that doesn't make me a bad person but I just think these people need to gain some perspective.

I hate reading about people who have left thousands of pounds to some animal charity. There are people, family members, dying out there. People are worrying for their children's lives for crying out loud.

Surely these are more worth while charities? I don't want to be guilted into giving however many pounds a month to dogs or hamsters in this 'difficult climate'.

I want to give hope and aid research into saving lives.

Oh Vallhala that's so very sad. He sounds like a very special young man. I haven't raised anywhere near that much although I know they are grateful for every penny.

Whilst I will always support and raise money for those charities for the help they gave us and other families we got to know during the most horrendous times I will now include your friend Liam to the list of those that I do it for and in memory of.

Greenspan · 02/05/2012 14:15

You're wrong, it does make you a bad person. There is clearly something lacking in you if you don't a) feel compassion for abused animals, and, more particularly, b) take the trouble to boast about it.

I give to animal and human charities, and hate to see anyone or anything suffering. But I wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire.

Mayisout · 02/05/2012 15:07

The RSPCA has income of 120million. Seems enough without my money, especially as most is from legacies.

Kayano · 02/05/2012 15:14

Some people have been let down by humans all their life and are recluses and animals may be their only joy and companions

Hate what you want but YABU to judge anyone for it

KellyElly · 02/05/2012 15:17

Course, how silly of them to advertise. Let the animals suffer as long as we humans are ok Hmm

squoosh · 02/05/2012 15:21

YABU

It?s interesting how people judge others based on which charities they choose to support. A few years ago in Scotland a charity, can?t exactly remember which one, think it was a children?s charity had a campaign with a strap line that went something like ?Would you prefer me if I drank out of a bowl? i.e. if I was a dog? I thought it was an incredibly negative campaign, basically trying to make people who donate to an animal's charity and not to theirs feel guilty. Not the best way to get people on side I thought.

Most people don?t donate to any charity, those are the ones they should be going after. Whatever charity someone chooses to support is their business.

Good for the RSPCA that they run such successful campaigns, other charities could take a leaf from their book. If an old lady wants to leave her estate to a donkey sanctuary (donkey sanctuaries rake it in apparently) then it?s none of your flippin? business.

I support animal and human charities.

Chilenachica · 02/05/2012 15:29

Totally

You could move over here, they don't do charity for animals like what you get over there. Here if an animal is sick it might die, might not, s'nature innit?

I get what you mean though, people are seriously struggling - not just oh dear we can't afford to buy a shiny new Xbox, or whatever, for each child- and these people are trying to get you to part with our hard earned to help a fluffy little - insert species of choose here- give your money, if you have any spare, to a charity of your choice and keep flipping channelsGrin

Mayisout · 02/05/2012 15:55

Well, yes, but with their 120million income it's no sweat.

EatsBrainsAndLeaves · 02/05/2012 16:09

I know some peopel have had negative experiences of charities. But when a pigeon was stuck down our chimney and obviously distressed, they quickly came out free of charge and released it. It happily flew away.

OrmIrian · 02/05/2012 16:09

"Surely these are more worth while charities? I don't want to be guilted into giving however many pounds a month to dogs or hamsters in this 'difficult climate'."

Well don't then FFS! Some people are able to care about animals and people.

OrmIrian · 02/05/2012 16:12

Oh dear...zombie thread.

theodorakis · 02/05/2012 16:12

I try to avoid people who say they don't like animals. I am sure animal non-likers would not find me their cup of tea, my house is usually sporting at least one puppy wee and I am always covered in hair.

EldritchCleavage · 02/05/2012 16:22

Erm.. I might have said that, once upon a time. Then I found a kitten that had somehow got its leg ripped off. It was hopping about in desperate pain. I was a student and had no money for a vet. No one wanted to know, except the RSPCA who came and collected the poor thing. It's a kind of animal emergency service and prosecutor (for offences involving animals) roled into one.
And while it may not be important to many people, in a civilised society it needs to be there.

Soojie · 02/05/2012 18:40

Totally in agreement with shonaspurtle - very good point. The emotive adverts on tv never bother to mention that they are England and Wales only...

KellyElly · 03/05/2012 10:34

I am now hiding this thread because the more I look at it the moew it disgusts and pisses me off.

porcamiseria · 03/05/2012 10:41

I agree, AND

whilst I dont support animal charties, I am glad that some people do

I think treating animals humanely is the mark of a civilised society

OrmIrian · 03/05/2012 10:47

"I think treating animals humanely is the mark of a civilised society"

Quite.

It is also one of the things that marks us out as 'higher' than animals if that is something that seems important to you. What other species cares for animals of a different species?

WhataMistakeaToMakea · 03/05/2012 11:27

WTAF? ''A charity similiar to like world vision has been coming around with an African man dark as the night, he seems lovely, and they have an english speaking woman talking.''

Really? Regardless of your point, is that how you talk about people?

I would never say 'A european women, as pale as the ice came round, she seemed lovely'

Anyway, back to the OP I see what you are saying. I love animals, I'm a veggie, I wouldn't want to see one hurt, but I have £20 I put aside for charity each month. I decided rather than £10 for animals and £10 for humans, that I would feel much better giving £20 to various human charities. I just see it as a priority to get them sorted first IYKWIM?

Ponyofdoom · 03/05/2012 15:06

I am with the OP on this one. The RSPCA rakes in an obscene amount of money, last time I checked (a while ago) they had huge reserves. I wouldn't mind so much, but they are also generally useless and put animals down much more hastily than other groups, from what I have heard. A friend employed by them is also being treated badly due to an injury that means she cannot do physical work for now. If I have an issue with an ill treated dog or horse I would contact the Dog Trust or World Horse Welfare not the RSPCA. I also do find it immoral to give to animals when humans suffer so much more (and I do keep much loved dogs and horses.) I also agree that the RSPCA wasted huge amounts on the anti hunting propaganda when the (pretty ineffectual) hunt ban has resulted in more foxes suffering far worse fates from being shot and snared etc.

PimpMyTunnel · 03/05/2012 15:14

If I had the money then english childrens charities would be my first choice to donate too. Cancer research and cancer support would be my second. Third would be animals. And I will never donate to africa! We need to help our own first let alone other fucking countries.

higgle · 03/05/2012 15:16

YABU Fortunately there are people like me who only give to animal charities to balance things out. Have a look at some of the clips on the VIVA and Animal Aid sites to see the horrendous cruelty people inflict on animals and remember that many seriously perverted criminals including Albert DeSalvo the Boston Strangler begin their careers of violence against people ( and women in particular) by abusing animals.

Ponyofdoom · 03/05/2012 15:21

I respect your opinion Pimp & agree with you on cancer charities, but I do give to Ethiopiaid because the lives of people in many developing countries is so hard, we are so lucky to have been born in the developed World. Ethiopiaid supports women needing fistula surgery for example, how could you disagree with that? Personally I also give to Amnesty and like to support Elderly people, I avoid childrens' charities because everyone likes to support them.

Ponyofdoom · 03/05/2012 15:23

higgle; animal charities do proportionately very well, there is no need to balance them out! Last time I checked, Animal Aid and Viva were animal rights not welfare groups, I do not believe in animal rights.
