To not be able to 'get' why people love their tumble drier?

This is not a euphamisim or code for anything else, I genuinely do not get why people like their tumble driers. I have an washer drier and every time I use it I end up with a load of crinkly washing whether I leave it in there or not. I generally find it makes my ironing experience rather more unpleasant than it already is. I prefer to air dry- either outside or on my pulley- despite the time that it takes.

I do not get why people are so evangelical about their tumble driers. Am I missing something? Do I need to buy drier balls? Am I inept in the ways of the drier?

Undoubtably I need to get a life but my question to you is, AIBU?

My tenuous hold over the housework in this establishment would slip altogether without my tumble dryer. And my dishwasher. Actually, if someone asked me to choose between DH and my dishwasher, I would hestitate. (Before choosing DH, obviously.)

Flannelette jarmies fresh and warm from the tumble dryer are one of the joys of winter.

We don't use our heating at all, so I feel I have enough green points to use the dryer when necessary.

I would have to consider the DH/dishwasher equation carefully before choosing as well .

skinsl · 13/10/2009 16:50

Yeah, its the washer/drier. Tumble driers actually seem to uncrease everything and dry really quickly. Washer/driers take forever and crease things. Never getting a washer/drier again

Or even hesitate

I much prefer drying washing on line or in my large airing cupboard and use the dryer as little as I can. But it is a godsend sometimes (like today when dd2 wet the bed so had to wash all her bedding inc duvet, then was out at work until 4.30 so could not have got it dry in time for bed tonight).

Dryer balls are VG, BTW

Also love my tumble dryer and I too had a washer drier once and it was crap. Tumble dryer is fab for bedding and towels, as a family of 7 we need it. I don't use it for anything decent or shrinkable though.

junkcollector · 13/10/2009 17:24

My tumble dryer has broken. The electricity bills are lower and I fill slightly less guilty environmentally speaking, however the piles of washing are threatening to take over the flat. My problem is that when it's sunny, instead of staying in a doing my washing so I can hang it out to dry, I go out. Then when it's rainy and I have to stay in the bloody washing won't get dry and just lies about limply hanging off clothes horses, doors and (not turned on) radiators making me angry.

So YANBU in a sense, but YABU in another

Love my tumble dryer. In fact, if the house went on fire, I would save it first. I never iron.

CaresMildly · 13/10/2009 19:14

Just got a TD after years with a washer drier and it is a revelation. The towels, my god the towels are amazing. So soft and fluffy and like new. The old washer drier would take years to dry the bedding but the TD whisks through in under an hour.

I use the drier balls and am damn impressed with them as well, as not a fan of fabric conditioner.

Mine died, I miss it how sad is that.
In the winter and in the wet getting school uniform dry is a nightmare, bedding and towles take forever, I take it to DH1s house and dry it there

pointyhat · 13/10/2009 19:24

I don't understand why anyone loves any machine so much they would voice their love.

Washer/driers are pants!
I love my tumble drier, as in this weather, I either stick all the washing in the drier, or I hang it up all over the house, and by the time it's dry, it's smelly. So it's a simple choice for me - to smell or not to smell!

DragonMamiCooksPotatoes · 13/10/2009 20:25

They're a godsend for those of us with severe allergies. I can't hang stuff out to dry as pollen lands on it & then I become allergic to my own bed linen.

It also means I don't iron.

NinthWave · 13/10/2009 20:27

I love my tumble dryer. However it lives in the garage as I am Scared Of Fires.

happypiglet · 13/10/2009 21:28

Ah I have a tumble dryer, I used it last winter to dry nappies and pants and socks, and my elec bill went up £150 and I died of shock.... Now I never use it, I line dry everything or hang it in my understairs cupboard. It never rains here in the SE (only once in past 6 weeks!!) so I am lucky. There are 5 of us and I do a wash overnight each day and even now it is cold it still dries outside in a day.
I never iron anything except DH work shirts. As far as I can remember noone has ever said to me 'gosh your kids look awful in those unironed clothes' once they have blown on the line a bit they look fine.... of course all my friends may refer to me as that slovenly woman whose kids look like beggars

magicOC · 13/10/2009 21:40

Washer/dryer rubbish. You need to take out half the wash load and leave it wet while you attempt to get the first half dry AND yes they do get all crinkled.

Tumble dryers on the other hand are an absolute god send especially in the middle of winter (where it usually rains) and you have a baby who projectile vomits at every feed and goes thruat least 30 muslin squares a day, not to mention bwee clothes and regular clothes.

Towels def come up lovely and soft.

magicOC · 13/10/2009 21:44

bed clothes

Doodleydoo · 13/10/2009 21:53

I love my tumbledryer hated the washer dryer - not nearly as effective and made all the clothes smell yucky. Washer dryers not a great reflection of tuble dryers as a whole!
