To not be able to 'get' why people love their tumble drier?

shootfromthehip · 13/10/2009 14:04

This is not a euphamisim or code for anything else, I genuinely do not get why people like their tumble driers. I have an washer drier and every time I use it I end up with a load of crinkly washing whether I leave it in there or not. I generally find it makes my ironing experience rather more unpleasant than it already is. I prefer to air dry- either outside or on my pulley- despite the time that it takes.

I do not get why people are so evangelical about their tumble driers. Am I missing something? Do I need to buy drier balls? Am I inept in the ways of the drier?

Undoubtably I need to get a life but my question to you is, AIBU?

So the washer dryer element of it is the problem?

yes

buy a seperate drier and your life will be so fulfilled

esp if you sit on it

you get thrilled by crunchy towels?

and yes
pippy, i do hang washing outside in summer, but it doesnt dry in winter/rain and then a tumble drier is fab!!!

shootfromthehip · 13/10/2009 15:14

Oh we have some real puritans on either side of the debate. So who is right and who is wrong, to crunch or not to crunch... that is the question? at own inanity!

blondes doesnt do crunchy unless the chocolate kind

miserableoldwoman · 13/10/2009 15:20

It is not 'green' to use a tumble drier.Peg it outside and be kind to the environment.

PuppyMonkey · 13/10/2009 15:27

Not green, my bum. I save energy I would use ironing by bunging most stuff in the tumble dryer/drier whatever. You very rarely need to iron after. Tis swings and roundabouts.

And of course I use the additional free time I have to campaign for the rainforest and shit.

Washer driers, yeah I've heard they are the pits.

shootfromthehip · 13/10/2009 15:31

PM "And of course I use the additional free time I have to campaign for the rainforest and shit"

HA- love it.

I'm afraid it's my one eco-sin, and that's because the other environment I want to be kind to is the house we live in.

I still line dry quite a bit, but we have a garden in constant shade and often nothing gets beyond damp. Having it decked about the place for days on end would sap every last vestige of enthusiasm for life that I have.

PuppyMonkey · 13/10/2009 15:39

Too bloody right, Kay!

TitsalinaBumsquash · 13/10/2009 15:42

weeelllll i couldn't be without my Tumbl Dryer, but becuase of DS1's chest we can't have wet laundry in the house on airers or anything so unless its mega sunny we would be screwed.

I don't iron though so i guess i dont get the crinkly drawbacks you do op.

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/10/2009 15:43

Washer driers are bleeding awful, crap at washing and crap at drying.

I love my drier because I cannot stand the sensation of crispy socks. And it is one of lifes pleasures to take out armfuls of warm laundry and bury your face in it.

Strangely enough I really like crispy towels (for the exfoliating effect after showering) so prefer to line dry towels.

GetOrfMoiLand · 13/10/2009 15:45

And although lose eco housepoints by having a tumble drier, I gain them by not having a dishwasher, a hoover and never having my heating on in bedroom.

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 13/10/2009 15:47

Yes, we don;t have a dishwasher, although the government carbon footprint wotsit said that we'd be greener if we did.

jobhuntersrus · 13/10/2009 15:50

Without my tumble dryer my house would be full of wet clothes and the heating would have to be on all the time to stop the place being all damp plus with a family of 5 there aren't enough radiators to hang it all on.

jobhuntersrus · 13/10/2009 15:52

See I think dishwasher must use less water than washing up 3/4 times a day. I don't have any proof of that but seems logical to me??

PuppyMonkey · 13/10/2009 15:56

Ah, you see I love my dishwasher too.

KayHarkerIsKayHarker · 13/10/2009 16:00

But I only wash up once a day

i try and be as green as i can but do fall down on the tumble dryer thing. i love it. end of. and i comfort myself with the thought of all the elctricity i have saved by not ironing...

motheroftwoboys · 13/10/2009 16:07

I only use my tumble drier when the weather is grotty - like today. Even then I never bother tumble drying anythng that I am going to iron - just shove them on a hanger straight out of the washer and they are dry enough to iron in a few hours. I always tumble dry towels - as I don't like them hard and bedding as I hate battling with it to get it on the line. Pants/socks/stuff that doesn't need ironing goes on the line or in the dryer depending on the weather. Couldn't live without it though!!

shootfromthehip · 13/10/2009 16:10

I love my dishwasher...

I got a tumble dryer for mothers day just gone and I've no idea how I survived without it. I love having warm fluffy towels .

Am hoping for a dyson for the next one!

Undercovamutha · 13/10/2009 16:20

! I just got a box of chocs for mothers day!

onemoretimetoday · 13/10/2009 16:27

Oooh I love my drier, clothes are all warm and soft and never need ironing. I can't bear having clothes hanging around the house, I limit it to things which will shrink and hate the idea of them drying in the garden. Washer driers are horrible though, you need a tumble drier.

pooexplosions · 13/10/2009 16:36

I didn't even get any bloody chocs!

I never wanted a tumble dryer until reading this thread! I felt the same as the OP.

Dammit now I want. No room for one though (and less cash). Bugger it, should not have opened this one.....

JackBauWooohooohoowaaer · 13/10/2009 16:43

I love my tumble dryer but then I live in the offical Wettest City In Britain so I would not manage very well with my rubbish central heating without it.
