I have no one to blame but myself as it was new two years ago and I've never cleaned it... ever

Is this normal?? Will the oven cleaning persons recoil in disgust?!

What is the limit for oven slovenliness... come on mumsnet barometer... I need answers!

i never understand the fuss people make about cleaning ovens (and i'm no great shakes around the house, witness my friend proclaiming she must have got the wrong house when she arrived and i was hoovering ). it's not a hugely pleasant job but takes less than half an hour using bicarb for the oven and one of those wire wool scrubbers for the racks. much rather spend the £50 on gin or boots.

Ladyanonymous · 10/10/2009 16:36

Yay!!! I've finally found a place where I can admit I have not cleaned my oven in 3 years...it is now broken due to the amount of dirt that has fallen on to the element

alibubbles · 11/10/2009 08:00

I have used Ovenclean and Ovenmaster, £45 (with a repeat discount voucher) in St Albans, it is as new, immaculate, no smell, no mess, and 45 minutes, including all the oven trays.

If have it done regularly, you get a good discount, but I have it done every six months.

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 12/10/2009 10:05

Thanks to this thread I have someone coming to clean my oven on Wednesday. DH is thinking that mumsnet is becoming an expensive habit....

freakname · 12/10/2009 10:20

I started fantasising yesterday that if someone gave me the 'blitz' clean (oh who am I kidding even the oven clean would do!) as a Christmas or birthday present they would earn sooooo many brownie points.
a) is that sad?
b) do you think I should start dropping hints now?

ThingumyandBob · 12/10/2009 11:01

Get someone in, after 2 years it's going to be a grim job! Trust me (oven slovenliness barometer here) I only clean mine when I can no longer cook a roast because of the smoke?had to do a clean last month, so that would be 2 ½ years?eeeew!

I did have a baby in that time though so I?ve been very busy!

wheresmypaddle · 12/10/2009 11:45

My mum bought me an oven cleaning session (think she was fed up of my filthy oven!!). Think he was called oven magic or something similar. My over was pretty bad but he didnt bat an eyelid, said his products were all non-toxic. He did a fantastic job, it was gleaming- even the door was restored to fully sea through glassiness.

All comes down to whether it fits into your budget- all I can say is that I went from "Grrrrr" my mother is disapproving of my housekeeping standards, to "wow" mum thank you!!

Eeek · 12/10/2009 11:57

I'm in west london and ovenclean cost me £65. When I said, all embarrassed "oh, you must have seen worse" he said "No!" I was mortified but it was lovely and clean at the end.

seaglass · 12/10/2009 12:00

4 and a half years ago, I bought a self cleaning oven. However, not once has it tried to clean itself, not once!
Get someone to clean it for you

morningpaper · 12/10/2009 12:03

Oooh it is grim job but it only takes an hour

How can you afford £60 for something that only takes an hour of your time?! I don't get it

pilates · 12/10/2009 12:13

YANBU it is one of the worst jobs - I have mine done evey year.

theworldsgoneDMmad · 12/10/2009 16:59

I haven't cleaned my oven in the 2 years I've had so I'm far less to know I'm not alone in my slatternly ways!

Having said that, when I did it this weekend, I just used Cif oven spray, left it for the maximum hour and the dirt had just curled off it. It took a few rinses to get all the grease out but it's so shiny now that I'm so glad I didn't spend 60 odd quid!

mummee09v · 12/10/2009 17:02

LOL strangely enough after scrubbing my kitchen from top to bottom today but not being able to face the inside my 3 year old oven, i have been considering the same thing!!

YANBU. Lol.

im off to check out that oven cleaning website!!

TsarChasm · 12/10/2009 17:08

It's up to you. I think it seems really expensive, but I suppose it depends how bad it is.

It's the sort of thing I might have done once - maybe if I moved into a house and the previous people left the oven dirty.

I can deal with cleaning it if I made it dirty but not someone else for some mad reason

OvenPride is pretty painless if you do want to tackle it yourself.

GetOrfMoiLand · 12/10/2009 17:13

Screw forking out all that money for oven cleaning, that's several bottles of wine or a meal out.

Do what I do - couple of weeks ago sprayed oven with that Mr Muscle oven cleaner which you are supposed to leave on half an hour max. I forgot all about it and spent the evening pissing about, at lunchtime next day discovered oven was still full of foam stuff. Well, it all wiped off really easily rather than having to scrub like mad. Easy. As far as I can tell it hasn't melted any of the oven components.

TsarChasm · 12/10/2009 18:23

Lol (def agree with GetOrf re the wine!)

I've done that before - sprayed on a load of gunk and forgotten about it. Except I switched the oven on. Awful smell permeating house. Dh and kids looking worried its their dinner which is making the awful smell.

welllllll
although i LOVE the thought of someone coming to clean my oven, i can't quite get round to the expense of it all...

and i've discovered this which is A..M..A..ZZZZ...I..N..G...(and there are plenty of threads on here saying the same thing)

I'm NOT a domestic goddess, i DON'T do cleaning very well, but this stuff it EASY and it costs the same as a nice BOTTLE of wine....(rather than a CASE of it). Lakeland also do a whacking great big blue tray thing which is useful for all sorts of things including cleaning the oven bits and pieces.

But you lot have got me round to thinking about saving the pennies for a big clean up - does sound LUSH

TheMummyonElkStreet · 12/10/2009 19:16

2ndcoming that is a fab story - love it. ex dp sort of deserves a thumbs up for even thinking of bringing someone to clean with him? sort of, in a weird way?!!!!

freakname · 12/10/2009 19:55

Dr Beckman do something that is non toxic. I have used it with success everywhere but the inside of the oven. It might work very well inside too it's just that I never get round to the inside of the oven.

Hulababy · 12/10/2009 20:03

I had someone clean my oven last week and it was great! Had main oven, top oven/grill, extractor, shelves and grill pan cleaned, filters changed and all bulbs changed. Cost £72 for 2.5 hours work and my oven looks like new. It is literally sparkling clean.

I am going to get into the habit of having them come and do it once a year.

There was no smell whatspever ether whilst he did it or afterwards.

I used Oven Revive.

LibrasBiscuitsOfFortune · 15/10/2009 18:49

I am gobsmacked at how they have managed to make my oven look. Worth every penny.

atworknotworking · 15/10/2009 19:00

Another ovenu fan best £50 I ever spent looked like new.

So NO YANBU but YABU if you dont, put your feet up, have a chocky and coffee relax and enjoy someone else scraping the carbon.
