I have no one to blame but myself as it was new two years ago and I've never cleaned it... ever

Is this normal?? Will the oven cleaning persons recoil in disgust?!

What is the limit for oven slovenliness... come on mumsnet barometer... I need answers!

Can I just also add that I haven't attempted to clean an oven since Mr Muscle oven cleaner left me with a sore throat for a week after I tried to clean one before leaving a rented flat - and I still got charged for it

Tiredmumofdjandbabies · 09/10/2009 22:58

scottishmummy do you mean deep clean as in cleaners come in and deep clean the whole house if so I am liking that idea VERY much (havent heard of that / is it dear / worth it?)

scottishmummy · 09/10/2009 23:03

yes, called end of tenancy clean.you remove all extraneous eg books, dvd, clutter, all items.they deep clean house. i pay £13ph and they do in 5h

oven clean separately cant recall what cost-sorry

PurpleCrazyHorse · 09/10/2009 23:05

Had it done yesterday for £45 and they changed the broken bulb too. Looks fab.

YA def NBU but I did have to keep reminding myself that it was ok to have two guys cleaning my oven because I have a 6 week old DD

SardineQueen · 09/10/2009 23:19

Are any of the prices on here london prices? I had heard it was £100 but this all seems much more reasonable...

Loving idea of deep clean but not at all sure about removing all extraneous, that is basically what I live knee deep in, extraneous...

scottishmummy · 09/10/2009 23:26

omg
it is so hard! extraneous=regular life but the results are outstanding
basically nothing apart form furniture and fixings.i just pile it all in crates

Tiredmumofdjandbabies · 09/10/2009 23:29

do they clean the carpets? or just clean?
ps, whispers where are you in scotland Im central belt

scottishmummy · 09/10/2009 23:38

ah carpets seperate,and upholstery.
but they do the rest eg
skirtings
dusting
cornice/plasterwork
pull out all furniture
wash internal windows frames/sills
etc
oh hell well worth it

no way with children you'd get this done

SardineQueen · 09/10/2009 23:46

No way with children you'd get it done, due to no time?

Or no way with children you'd get it done, due to removal of extraneous?

Or just no way with children will you ever get anything done

scottishmummy · 09/10/2009 23:52

both work ft.don't want to spend time off cleaning.i also have weekly cleaner

happy to box up extraneous ans someone else deep clean

barnsleybelle · 10/10/2009 00:04

i'm the same as scottishmummy. Every 3-5 months i have a blitz clean which includes oven clean. It's bliss. We go out for the day when they are coming and it's like walking into paradise when we come home Worth every penny.

SardineQueen · 10/10/2009 00:09

Oh that "you" should have been "one".

What I meant was, when you said no way with children would you get this done, did you mean you wouldn't be able to keep the house clean due to lack of time and so best to get help, or that with children there's no way you can get tidy enough for the firm to come in and do it IYSWIM

I have a toddler and a baby and can't see any way I could get the house rid of extraneous, even for a day

SardineQueen · 10/10/2009 00:10

how much is it barnsley?

barnsleybelle · 10/10/2009 00:20

Not cheap sardine i'm afraid... I pay £100 for a one off. Believe me though it really is a joy to come home to. We are talking windows, top of kitchen cupboards, ALL paintwork, ALL furniture moved out and scrubbed, insde oven, microwave, fridge etc. it's immaculate. Like you, with 2 young uns it doesn't last very long but boy is it nice while it does

SardineQueen · 10/10/2009 00:24

I'd be tempted...

It's a bitch though, when I was single and had a good job and had a small flat that I could keep clean even though I was usually drunk, I had no need for this.

Now I have a husband and 3 bed semi and nearly 2.2 children, I really need this. But I don't have a pile of cash in my pocket any more...

And what would my grannies have said

SardineQueen · 10/10/2009 00:25

£100 sounds like a bargain actually. Guessing those are up north prices though...

barnsleybelle · 10/10/2009 00:35

Defo "up north" prices lady!!!
Aint life typical sardine, i too kept a clean house until the 2 babes arrived.. Just started back at work after 2 yrs off so need my spring clean more than ever!!!

SardineQueen · 10/10/2009 00:43

Yes I have a 2yo and 3mo. I have found however, that it's the DH that makes much of the mess... I reminisce sometimes about my little flat, 12 years I was there, and it was so less stacked full of shite...

barnsleybelle · 10/10/2009 00:47

Well, mine are 7 and 2 but DH works away for 3 months at a time so said shite is restricted to 3 weeks intervals

zazen · 10/10/2009 01:12

I love this idea - The chemicals in those oven cleaners are pretty strong for DC's lungs!
I have excema on my hands at the moment and the house looks filthy to me

Dh's strength is hoovering and tidying.. NOT cleaning. DH cleaned the oven about three years ago, and I didn't notice... and he seems to leave the dust bunnies under the sofas to themselves!

Anyone use the carpet cleaner you hire yourself?

sparkle09 · 10/10/2009 02:23

im quite happy doing it all when pregnant, but that was 2 and half years ago,

i will add i only moved in thins house a year ago and im looking at getting preg again late next year, is that slovenly? i do windows at front and general housework. but a whols house deep clean (includin oven,) is when pregnant.

oh dear doesnt sound good does it?

emmabutton · 10/10/2009 08:39

I use 'the oven cleaning company' who serve much of south. They don't use stinky chemicals at all and I swear that my oven looks as good as new after they come. I get them to come 2/3 times a year and have done for the past 2 years... I will never look back. Don't think I can even remember how to clean an oven!

Had it done this week while I entertained the DD in the living room. It took 2 hours and he even fixed my cooker clock which has been broken 4 months. I have a double oven and 5-ring hob and it cost me £72.

Whats the point in doing it yourself badly tens of times a year when you can pay someone to do it BRILLIANTLY once or twice.

FourArms · 10/10/2009 08:57

I haven't cleaned mine in about a year. The hob is immaculate though - clean that whenever it's dirty, and stick all bits through dishwasher. I use oven pride on the oven racks every few months, and dishwash them inbetween, so they're not that bad either. What else does an oven clean achieve? Not sure mine is that dirty. We permanently keep a massive baking tray in the bottom which gets a soak with washing powder (and a dishwash - sensing a theme here!) now and again, so the bottom of the oven is clean. Don't really use the oven much... don't often do roasts or roast potatoes and the like... Will I notice a difference if I get my oven professionally cleaned?

But.. if yours is dirty.. def NBU to get somebody else to do it. The chemicals are horrible.

Sbeanmum · 10/10/2009 09:43

Good effort, I too feel comforted that there are others as slovenly out there!

YADNBU!

Nanga · 10/10/2009 15:49

YANBU. DH spends about £20 getting his car cleaned every month(why? why? When he could do it himself!), so spending £50 - £60 every six months to get oven cleaned is entirely justifiable. If you do it yourself, that chemical smell lingers for weeks, even taints food and that can't be good for us, let alone the little uns
