the use of the words "stood" where standing is appropriate and "sat" where sitting is appropriate.

It is driving me insane.

It is everywhere.

My husband and friends feel that this is the final signal that I have tipped over into madness.

Am I being unreasonable to twitch and switch the radio to Radio 4 in disgust, muttering under my breath all the while....

PS
offof is also tres irritating imho

bah humbug, down with the young

gerontius · 07/10/2009 23:03

Ronaldinhio, I love you.
"You've all been sat so well."
NO! NO! NO!

Ronaldinhio · 07/10/2009 23:04

no, why?

Although I don't know any Irish people who do it...so perhaps
Has el Tel got a bee in his thatch about it also?

A lot of it is regionalthough isn;t it?

I never write off of,I know it is incorrect, but I talk broad Somerset and frequently say it.

DH OTOH writes it; I tell him off.

TigerBitesAgain · 07/10/2009 23:05

Pedant alert: everyone here's saying yy all the time. What is it? Is it Yaay (cringe) or Yes, Yes, Yes (Harry met Sally) or what?

Sorry, thick emoticon.

Ronaldinhio · 07/10/2009 23:06

It was on the Radio 1 news today.....I wanted to throw the radio on the floor and jump up and down on it
Might not have gone down so well as I standing in an office at the time

Tiger

yy is [nodding vigorously] for lazy sods

HTH

Ronaldinhio · 07/10/2009 23:10

I don't think it's regional, I think it is having Scott Mills and his ilk on the radio and the ongoing dumbing down of the English language and grammar

i know I'm mental btw

TigerBitesAgain · 07/10/2009 23:11

Ronald - el Tel has a real go about "I was sat here" as opposed to "I was sitting or I was seated (asif you'd say that), and also stood standing. It features on his show a lot around 8.45 (when I am listening, so probly more than that). Not Irish, just grammar.

But what with the yy?

Ronaldinhio · 07/10/2009 23:11

also agree with yy

moves over on step..offers sherbet lemon

OP posts:
TigerBitesAgain · 07/10/2009 23:13

Oh, so I shouldn't bother to type "yes! I agree with you". I should just go "yy". AAARRGH

Well thank you ladies for setting me right on that one, which I won't be using anytime soon .

TheCrackFox · 07/10/2009 23:14

I don't understand it. Jeez, I really am thick.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/10/2009 23:15

And newsreaders randomly stressing words or parts of words in a sentence - grrrrrr.

eg Four THOUsand pounds.

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/10/2009 23:22

Only Chandler can get away with it.

TigerBitesAgain · 07/10/2009 23:23

Who's Chandler?

BoysAreLikeDogs · 07/10/2009 23:25

Chandler.

Y'know.

From Friends

Ronaldinhio · 07/10/2009 23:26

I agree with the weird stresses on words!!

Thank goodness someone in the world agrees...hooray

Sometimes they make absolutely no sense at all...as though they have been employed straight from Mars with a speaks English 101 chip installed but not functioning properly.

There was again a particularly bad one working on the news at Radio 1 no one else I knew had even noticed it...arggghhh

BALD - sorry, I don't WATCH tv. No, really, I don't watch TV, not really. I just know by osmosis who all these people are. The one who are stood about, like. YY.

pruneplus2 · 07/10/2009 23:30

What does yy offof mean? How is it used?

I think I am also thick.

Ronaldinhio · 07/10/2009 23:31

how can it be that you don't watch television?
Don't you even sneakily sky plus all the crap you want in the week and watch it when you are feeling weak or tired or mindless or MORTAL

One of my favourites is the bbc sports reporter who announces a record-breaking sprint (or similar - he does it a lot) as 'the fastest time IN the world this year'.

Why???

TigerBitesAgain · 07/10/2009 23:32

hey, prune, not so much of the "also" lady. Just not quite with the zeitgeist, non?
