My partner and i, decided to married next year

We foned around for venues, n prices etc, n a particular venue did a £1500 wedding package, to include vintage car, 3 course meal for 50 people in the day, buffet for 80 in the evening, professional photographer with 30 pic album, disco and dj etc for evening

We had planned the wedding for 4th sept, but registry office didnt have any dates in september, but had a spot free for 28th august, bank hols weekend

My partner foned this venue, who also stated they were available, and put menu"s etc in post for us to chose, we would have 7 days to bring the paperwork back and pay deposit, but they had assured us the date was booked.

So we booked the registry office, and paid the deposit of £43.50 yesterday

However, 10 mins ago the venue foned to say they had double booked, and had already been booked for a wedding that day

The lady on the fone seemed, not one bit sorry, n was basically asking us what alternative dates we"d like, even after been told the deposit had been paid to registry office,

I know that im never gonna afford to pay more than what they were asking for the package, one venue has quoted me £800 for the afternoon meals alone

AIBU to expect the venue to refund me the deposit of the registry office, seeing as i only picked that date because they had assured it was available, and they had booked us in?

It is their fault, but I doubt they are technically liable. If you do-rebook with them it would be a good gesture for them to give you the equivalent off. If you do it somehwere else instead there's no chance you'll get anything from them.

Firawla · 07/10/2009 20:05

yanbu, if you persist with them and continue pushing the complaint you could probably get them to refund that.
the only thing i would worry about is that does this indicate they are very unreliable? will they mess you about & cause you stress with your wedding arrangements?
that does sound a good deal though 1500 all inclusive

Lulumama · 07/10/2009 20:05

will the registry office not refund you or move the deposit to secure a new date?

They should really but they are unlikely to if they know you will rebook with them anyway.

Lulumama · 07/10/2009 20:07

that's also true, reality. £1500 for all that sounds too good to be true !!

Ronaldinhio · 07/10/2009 20:10

arrghhhh

what do you mean foned?

Seriously, that is really good value for a wedding! £40 is nothing next to that...

welshbyrd · 07/10/2009 20:25

I know for that price its a bargain, and i have been to friends wedding there, and they have been really good

I would"nt have been so upset, but when i paid the deposit to the registry office, she stated clearly, that they are really full booked from june next year to October, so if i thought we could re book a diff date then i suppose it wouldnt be so bad,

And yes take the piss £1500, for a good photographer etc etc korma, Im not rich, and beleive it or not, i have to save long and hard for that £1500

My partner and I work hard, both full time and we have 3 children, one being only 5months, hence why i want to get married mid next year, when the baby will be walking

We are hard working people, who dont have millions in the bank, like many families

vintage car might be a 20 year old ford escort! i'd check all the small print about what you will get exactly, down to the last vol au vent for that.

paisleyleaf · 07/10/2009 20:25

The registry office might move the date without it affecting your deposit - as it is plenty of notice. Might be worth asking.
Also, I agree with the posters that say that with the bargain price of the venue with so much included....forfeiting the deposit might still work out better for you than sorting out somewhere else and cars, photographer etc.

Lulumama · 07/10/2009 20:27

erm, i hate to break this to you, but most families don't have millions in the bank

also, korma is not taking the piss, that is what a good photographer will charge to photograph a wedding, often excluding any prints, and certainly not including 30 pics.

LynetteScavo · 07/10/2009 20:27

We need a link to this a amazing value venue...

I agree woith ohter posters.

Next time get it in writting before you pay registry office.

welshbyrd · 07/10/2009 20:28

Is the registry office really booked June til October....or is that just Saturdays? Might be worth you thinking about a friday wedding.

paisleyleaf · 07/10/2009 20:30

texting.

LynetteScavo · 07/10/2009 20:30

Welsh bryd...are they booked up for Satudays, or all days?

Woudl you consider a Friday wedding? There have been a lot of Friday weddings around here lately.

Hmmmm yeah may have to think of a friday wedding, not sure if the lady at the registry office meant just weekends that were busy

Thanks for the advice x

I know i probably seem to been making a mountain out of a molehill etc, but i was really upset when the call come in

Means alot to me, neither of us have been married before, and never will again, so just want it to be right

Thanks again x

Call the registry office and ask them first of all if you can move the date, still using the fee you have already paid.

If you're unable to get the deposit back, then ask the hotel if they will deduct that from the overall bill if you reschedule and have your reception there.

I really don't think anyone is taking the piss on here though - it's true, some photographers do cost £1500 and more. It sounds like an amazing deal. See what you can do to reschedule.

paisleyleaf · 07/10/2009 20:37

I think that looks a good deal. Worth losing the deposit for.
Speak to the registry office about alternative dates. We got married on a friday. You'll be giving people plenty of notice to get day off work etc.
I would suggest not depending on their photos though, and asking your family and friends to take lots of photos for you (maybe give out some of those disposable cameras)

Rindercella · 07/10/2009 20:40

Agree with the Friday suggestion - we have been to a few weddings on a Friday (even one on a Thursday).

Looks like a really good deal. Go for the hog roast in the evening though, will be more fun.

LittleWhiteWolf · 07/10/2009 20:45

I agree with paisleyleaf. You may not have millions in the bank, but I think this is worth losing the deposit.

I would also speak to the registry office...I know its a non-refundable deposit, but as you only just booked it and maybe if you explain what happend they might move your date and not charge again?
Apologies if you've tried that, I admit I only skimmed the thread.

Also, we got married on a Friday last year (Hallowe'en!) and it was fine--everyone made it as they'd had plenty of notice and everything was a bit cheaper!

Shame about the 28th though. Thats my birthday!
