... to wonder if I'm the only Conservative voter on mumsnet? Is there anyone else out there or should I just go and hide my head in shame?

The title says it all. I'm not a toff. I'm just a normal mum and PhD student. I don't earn much and no-one in my family went to univeristy, let alone Eton. I'm getting the impression I'm in a tiny minority, possibly N=1. I haven't dared post on any of the political threads because I lack time and courage to be a lone voice of dissent. Anyone else out there or should I just accept that I sniff don't belong?

So you now you have to have experienced everything before you're allowed to have an opinion on it?

Of course those examples are never likely to need the things listed because they're high up politicians and so on a decent wage. I doubt Tony Blair, Gordan Brown etc will int he future either but there are plenty of people with similar starts in life to all of these who may do.

bronze · 07/10/2009 22:27

Agree with your last sentence doodley. I know of a few people who I think would make great prime ministers. Only problem is because theyre good honest hardworking people they would never get to be the pm

Bronze - was that me? I don't understand, I obviously haven't experienced it all and don't want to have pissed you off. Obviously you don't have to have experienced everything but the bits you have definitely form your opinons going forward.

I am on your side but what I am refering to is probably more to do with jobs for the sake of jobs - and getting paid lots for it. Good honest working people are the ones that get left behind always and what is so stupid is that they are the ones that vote.

It seems that all political parties choose the most random but in the press topics, which are obviously placed by PR's.

I say again - lets start our own party focusing on our own needs and stuff everyone else as they all seem to have stuffed the majority of us. Vote Mumnet. Just not me as I am obviously a little too blue (i expect that DP would like that though!) {smile]

bronze · 07/10/2009 22:40

Because I also know plenty of these people some now rich some not so. My husband went to a well known public school and I spent the best part of last week trying to work out how we can keep our roof over our heads (and not the tiles on our country estate). I just hate such generalisations about people. If noone could ever see anything from anyone elses point of view we would be well and truly stuffed. I like to think there are some who may be better than that. SO no I am not being deliberately obtuse

I will agree though there are also some who lovely as they are just have no idea what its like for others but I will not put people into boxes in that way

GibbonWithAnAppleBobbingBibOn · 07/10/2009 22:41

Pal visting so had to leave this thread, shame as I was really enjoying it. Did @ HC 'And actually ALL my friends are lefty '

and notnowbernard - I have coveted your name as it always makes me smile

bronze · 07/10/2009 22:41

Doodley no I was a bit behind the second post was though

bronze · 07/10/2009 22:43

Who shall we put up for leader then Doodley or does it have to be Justine or one of that lot

Doodleydoo · 07/10/2009 22:44

Secondcoming - Ok spanner in the works - I thought National Trust was a charity? But am dim so could be wrong.

Actually wishing I was a charity so I could spend £200 on the most perfect boots in the world (10 years in the searching) but I know that is toff spend and don't earn enough for that - but there is always ebay and money for xmas!

Do you know what - I think I might stop now as you will all probably hate me for my political views - i.e anything better than labour - tbh I don't read the policies and I hope that life just treats me well in the long run. who wants to live with hardship in anyway shape or form and for all of us all of the political parties will impact our lives for better and worse in all areas.

Thats why I am Mumsnet for PM.

Besides I only really wanted to know the answer to who you would shag/marry/push off a cliff

Doodleydoo · 07/10/2009 22:46

Do you know what Bronze I think Justine would get all the votes from the dirty old men out there!

Otherwise am sadly to new for proper decisions on MN PM.

I have also decided that I would quite like to be a toff. Is that really heinous?

I mean then I could get the boots without having to be a charity!

Doodleydoo · 07/10/2009 22:49

smallwhitecat - good point!

bronze · 07/10/2009 22:49

smallwhitecat dh told me to mention Blair but Ive decided I've had too stressful a week and am prefering to talk about the idea of Justine for PM

I just hate huge sweeping generalisations abotu this kind of thing

And to post again in a short amount of time - is it too toff to aspire to Boden clothes, jojo maman for the DC and hobbs for a good day - actually think I might be just middle class rather than toff.

bronze · 07/10/2009 22:50

Doodley

Like the 'toffs' with their houses you would have to show that you having the boots would be good for the history of the nation in the same as their houses. Or maybe it could be for the good of fashion, culture and the arts or something

BobbingForPeachys · 07/10/2009 22:52

SWC I don;t think I have a problem with schools people attend on an individual basis.

I do want there to be a representation of all backgrounds in parliament and ruling party- regardless of party. I think that is sensible and right.

I ahd to laugh at a letter in the media the other day- declaring that as Mr Obama is so healvily admired for his Harvard education, tehn so should DC be for his Eton one.

And I think thats it really- for every person put off by the Eton tire, so there is another who is entranced by it. Botha re wrong.

AHarvard and Eton of course are nto comaprable as one is on metrit, the other funding. But more importantly what we need to look at is the breadth of the cabinet- are all classes reflected. Is there someoone who can empathise with my lot and that of someone well off?

With the Tories, I suspect not and that is a valid concern, and not at all teh same as class bias which of course is rank.

Doodleydoo · 07/10/2009 22:53

2nd coming - do you know what, sounds like more hassle than its worth to have the national trust around. Lets face it do you want people coming every weekend to your house to "nose" around. can't possibly think of anything worse! Imagine not being able to leave your dirty pants on the floor after a friday night out! horrid /

think i am better off in small home with no weekend nosey people!

ilovemydogandmrobama · 07/10/2009 22:55

I've always wondered if you can get real ale in a local Tory club? How much is a pint? Just that I would rofl if beer was subsidised!

Doodleydoo · 07/10/2009 22:56

Bronze - those lusted after boots are definitely good for the nation. It might mean I got enough confidence to put myself up for PM and then I think the country would be far better off!

However they would look good on Justine!

bronze · 07/10/2009 22:56

Actually Harvard like all the US ones have stonking great fees but in principle I agree with you on that.

You will never get a complete cross section because to get anywhere in politics you have to be a certain type of person. So if they get to the top regardless of school or upbringing they probably have more in common than first thought

BobbingForPeachys · 07/10/2009 22:57

They will have some things in common sure, but what they have that separates is at least of equal significance

Doodleydoo · 07/10/2009 22:58

ilovemydaughterandmrobama - you can get real ale in a tory club/lib dem club and labour club - all subsidised so therefore all of us should join a club of some sorts.

(I know DH works for a well known drinks company!)

bronze · 07/10/2009 22:58

Doodley I agree about the pants thing. Having a stately home as your home can't be pleasant. I know a lot feel it is a duty of care for the next generation rather than something lovely to live in. I think I would just give the house to the National Trust and live in the dower house or equivilent then I could hang me knickers fromt he light fittings without any worries
