... to wonder if I'm the only Conservative voter on mumsnet? Is there anyone else out there or should I just go and hide my head in shame?

The title says it all. I'm not a toff. I'm just a normal mum and PhD student. I don't earn much and no-one in my family went to univeristy, let alone Eton. I'm getting the impression I'm in a tiny minority, possibly N=1. I haven't dared post on any of the political threads because I lack time and courage to be a lone voice of dissent. Anyone else out there or should I just accept that I sniff don't belong?

I feel so sorry for Chris Grayling today, he looks such a twat over the Dannatt issue!

nappyzonecantrunfortoffee · 07/10/2009 19:09

i dont know what i am - i was when i read on here about labour scrapping tax credits and thought hu right im blue then hear they conservatives on about freezing public sector pay (i wk public sector) so now im not blue - i dont thnk im anything but skint and pissed off either way.

MrsJohnDeere · 07/10/2009 19:13

Another Tory voter here.

HumphreyCobbler · 07/10/2009 19:16

I nearly started this thread today, after someone called all Tories cunts. I know that they meant politicians, but I felt insulted by proxy.

The thing about mn is that left wing people often say such abusive things about those who are right wing. The terms right wing is often conflated with fascist, racist or homophobe, you are assumed to be a daily mail reader (bet a lot of those voted Labour).

The left wing people who really seem to know a lot invariably discuss policy rather than descending into abuse, I wish it could all be like that.

Nope you are not alone...

My family come from NE England, and (a long time ago) a mining family
BUT
I have voted Tory every since I was 18.

I admired Thatcher for having the guts to do something which needed to happen (reduce the ridiculous power the unions had on essential state services). When I did my economics degree I was struck by how obviously non-sensical the 'propping up' of failing manufacturing industries was - it's not solving a problem - just pretending it doesn't exist?

My gran died in the 'winter of discontent' when the ambulance workers were on strike.(Labour in power at the time - so her blood is on their hands)).
She had a heart attack and the only way she could be taken to hospital was in the back of an open-backed army jeep. It was sub-zero temperatures outside. She died shortly after arriving at hospital.

I also believe in personal responsibility and community - both of which are core Conservative values. I detest the current 'entitlement' culture we seem to have developed in Britain these days.

I think a lot of people are 'quiet' Tories and don't always bother engaging in the 'debate' - probably because the argument on Mumsnet these days often isn't very well-contructed and informed - it just descends into insults and swearing (which speaks volumes about the sort of people who tend to vote Labour?)

GibbonWithAnAppleBobbingBibOn · 07/10/2009 19:24

Some of my best friends are Tory

GibbonWithAnAppleBobbingBibOn · 07/10/2009 19:27

(which speaks volumes about the sort of people who tend to vote Labour?)

ABetaDad · 07/10/2009 19:27

Yet another Tory here. Proud to say the first time I ever voted I voted Thatcher, stayed up all night to cheer every seat as it was announced. Used to live in Dave Cameron's constituency and now live in a marginal Labor seat that will go Tory at the election.

I want and expect the Labour party to be destroyed as a political force so they can never blight this country again. Every Labour Govt in history has ended with the country on the brink of financial collapse.

LibDems are the natural successor party to the Labour Party and actually want them to be stronger to keep Tories on their toes.

Legacy · 07/10/2009 19:28

OK - I admit - I missed out a after that line

ABetaDad · 07/10/2009 19:28

I am not a toff eitehr although my DSs go to private school as did I. The toff label is just lazy class warfare politics of envy.

HumphreyCobbler · 07/10/2009 19:31

Oh well. That is the first really insulting thing anyone has said on this thread. See my point about the well argued lefty though!

I do think that Labour has the moral high ground vote on here just because the last Tory admin was so sneery and nasty. I say this as a Tory voter. I obviously believe things are different now or I wouldn't vote for them.

I do remember one thread where someone asked for ammunition against her Tory husband to use in an argument and was told she shouldn't have married a Tory!

Legacy · 07/10/2009 19:32

No ABD - I'm not a 'toff' either - I agree, that's just the sort of lazy insult Labour use when they can't think of any reasoned argument.
I went to an inner city comprehensive school.
My mum was a nurse.
My dad worked for the health service.

Proud to be a Tory (and a card-carrying one at that!)

gerontius · 07/10/2009 19:36

When people complain that they're being "penalised" for earning more, they seem to forget that that's how it works; richer people pay more taxes.

GibbonWithAnAppleBobbingBibOn · 07/10/2009 19:39

No point in either side exchanging insults and low blows imo. I hope I never stoop to that level, if I ever do, slap me

Rather a friendly debate than voting apathy

HumphreyCobbler · 07/10/2009 19:41

I do agree.

And actually ALL my friends are lefty

notnowbernard · 07/10/2009 19:42

Gibbon, just wanted to say that you have the best Halloween name I have seen, EVER

Am hoping that if the Conservatives do get in they give the Benefit system a good kick up the arse and get all those Jeremy Kyle guests off the Dole and into work. If anything it'll tire them out too much to breed like rabbits. The result will be less scumbags having kids they don't/can't look after and certain people will stop viewing claiming benefits as a "lifestyle" choice and it can go back to being what it was intended for, a short-term safety net to get you out of a hole.

lovechoc · 07/10/2009 19:44

Have never voted Labour or Conservatives in all my life. Neither is worth their weight in gold. Labour is just glorified Tories.

lovechoc · 07/10/2009 19:45

artlesschaos I like your no-sh*t straight talking statement there.

ABetaDad · 07/10/2009 19:46

smallwhitecat - I know someone who works at the BBC and she is a Tory. She says it is very right on champagne socialist. She has to bite her tongue most of the time.

GhostWriter · 07/10/2009 19:46

There are a lot of tories on here and while I disapprove of what you say, I will defend to the death your right to say it.

or

Although I would rather gnaw off my own limbs and then eat a live tarantula for puddding than vote Tory, I fully respect your right to think differently.

lovechoc · 07/10/2009 19:48

As for Mgt Thatcher, she totally ruined all communities across the Central Belt (Scotland), bang went the mining communities then. There is still a lot of bitterness to this day after what she did. And I know it won't ever be forgotten.

artlesschaos · 07/10/2009 19:48

Lovechoc, tell me I'm wrong though. There are far too many people claiming benefits they are not entitled to. My sister's husband it "registered disabled" with a bad back. He works cash in hand as a painter and decorator FFS! I believe the Tories will shake up the system and it's well overdue IMO.
