I recently heard that Facebook may start charging a monthly/annual fee to members who use this site. I personally don't use it but DH does and he just shrugged when I told him about it.

It is just a rumour at the moment, but if it happens, I can't help feeling quite happy about it. Means less people will be spending their time staring at a computer and putting useless 'updates' on their pages.

YABVU - I don't use FB to network, every one of my "friends" is someone I know, it's a fantastic way to keep in touch with old school friends who I otherwise wouldn't ring or write to, but also, I have friends who live abroad - this is the easiest way to see how they're doing, see their photo's etc.
Surely chatting on MN to a load of anonymous mothers is, in principle, worse than keeping in touch with a few friends (not that I'm criticising or anything - guess where I was for nearly 4 hours last night , yes, that's right, Mumsnet mwahahaha)

scottishmummy · 07/10/2009 15:00

god someone is going to quip MN like online crack

scrappydappydoo · 07/10/2009 15:23

"i fail to see the diference between someone saying on their status " wearing new skinny jeans today"

and someone posting in style section of mumsnet " i am wearing my new skinny jeans today""

well exactly custardo - and lets not forget - it's only the people you've added as friends that will see that you're wearing your skinny jeans if you post in on facebook.

Post it on here and you're telling thousands of people

GoldenSnitch · 07/10/2009 15:38

Post it on here and it's google-able!

That's many millions of people!!

I have quite a few friends but I'm not that popular!

lovechoc · 07/10/2009 15:39

but I wouldn't be looking on the style section of MN for that, so I would have to go out of my way to search for someone saying they are wearing skinny jeans.
However if someone on FB posted that same statement, everyone on their friends list would know about it whether they wanted to or not. That's the difference.

No, I have plenty friend I keep in touch with using a (!!!!!!) telephone and (!!) email. Certainly not jealous...

It's interesting to see that there are a few like-minded people here on this thread, yet the majority (who coincidentally use FB regularly) don't get it.

Yes, people can do what the heck they want, but doesn't stop someone from voicing their opinion. Freedom of speech and all that. I haven't directly my comment at any poster in particular, it's a general statement.

Agree with the posters that said you wish your dh wouldn't be on it. Sounds to me like that's the real reason you dislike it.

PeachyTentativelyPosting · 07/10/2009 15:48

For us staring at the PC is how we keep in touch with family and friends away; no doubt Dh willpay but he will ahve tosacrifice something else to do that which is a shame (his family not great on getting together!) My sis doesn't use email- she updates Fb from hospital to let us know how her ill DH is though, and as I have a phone phobia (sad but true) it works fine

I hardly waste any time on FB; maybe on for ten minutes every now and again, tried the games but couldn't see the point. MN OTOH- yes well.

alwayslookingforanswers · 07/10/2009 15:48

well if you click on active convo's and someone has started a thread

"I'm wearing my new skinny jeans today"

then chances are you're going to see it - even if you don't click on the thread - unless you're actually sitting on the "home" page on facebook or clicking on their profile there you're not going to know.

I am lolling at that statement, pot, kettle, black spring to mind.

Oops just popped in from FB. Off again....

GibbonWithAnAppleBobbingBibOn · 07/10/2009 15:59

What's with all of the facebook bashing threads over the last few days?

YABU

Do I detect a hint of not liking DH using it?

alwayslookingforanswers · 07/10/2009 15:59

Fimbo - talking of Bejewelled (Blitz I presume?) wtf have they done to it - hadn't been on for a week or so and they've buggered with all the graphic and game play and I hate it.

skybright · 07/10/2009 16:03

alwayslookingforansw..It changed last night,i hate it as well.

FimboFortunaFeet · 07/10/2009 16:08

Always - yes I agree, have had to turn the volume off too as the "voice" is giving me the creeps.

Tortington · 07/10/2009 16:09

well as i'm glancing down active convos i see the title of the curent threads - its not unlikley that there are more than a few that i think wtf! and ignore

besides if you had a friend that always posted dumbshit things - you can chose to ignore their fb updates if you so wish.

alwayslookingforanswers · 07/10/2009 16:11

oh I never have the sound on as I've often got one or two other FB applications open in different windows and it just sounds horrendous.

KembleTwins · 07/10/2009 16:13

I get geekily excited about the fact that I am playing scrabble with my lovely friend Jim in New Zealand. Hoorah for Facebook!

GoldenSnitch · 07/10/2009 16:23

PLus, there is nothing stopping people posting stuff on seemingly unrelated threads...

For example - I am wearing my big, fat, maternity jeans today.

There you go, not even my Facebook friends know that

Tortington · 07/10/2009 16:24

pmsl

Honeypeckle · 07/10/2009 16:25

YABEXTREAMLEYU!!!

I get tot have instant chats with friends and family inlaw in Australia without having to pay huge phone bills..

alwayslookingforanswers · 07/10/2009 16:25

oh btw custard - how are things with your DH and work situation???

Tortington · 07/10/2009 16:38

thank yo my darling you certainly are! he went for HR mtg yesterday after he gave his notice in last thursday. He asked about a reference as he was very worried about that and HR lady told him they just give straight factual info unless asked for anything diferent which in her experience has only ever happened a couple of times DH VERY happy with that

he then got his chance to tell his manager and his managers managers about the piss poor management.

he came home a happy bunny - use of comapny car til end of monthas he is taxed on it - and 3 weeks paid leave as they dont want him back on site becuase he could bugger things up for them contractually if he were that kind of person i suppose.

alwayslookingforanswers · 07/10/2009 16:41

oh that's good - fingers crossed he finds another job asap
