post an AIBU about some inane minutia of their lives? It's on par with facebook/twitter updates, where someone feels they've got to inform you they've just had to go out and get some milk before they have their cereal. Some f/b updates I've seen even just have 'hmmmm' or '//////' and people reply!! Perhaps it's just the people I know

Or have I got this all wrong, and it's really about people just wanting to chat and know someone else is out there?

The great thing about MNs is that you may just find at least one person to respond to your rant. In real life no one would bother and you would be left muttering like a loon in the corner.

There is nearly always someone who is just as annoyed as you by some petty crap that life chucks at you.
