an example:

We have had a hell of a building nightmare. We have, to cheer ourselves up, decorated our front room, almost done, we spent a long time prepping walls, repairing damage to ceiling, changing light fittings, cutting in carefully.

Because we have not chosen 'beige', neutral or a variety of, which appears to be the trend at the moment with our friends, not one person appears able to say 'your room is looking lovely'.

the comments are:

oh, I thought you were doing all the wall that colour?

You are doing all the wall that colour? oh.

Yes, its nicer than I thought it would be

Well it makes the room look bigger at least.

Blue? interesting choice?

Yeeees, lovely.

We have had so much headache and lived in such chaos that just something positive to recognise how hard we are working to rectify our tip of a home would be appreciated.

I know its not about anyone else, its about us and if we like it. I just would sometimes like my friends to not be so honest, and just say 'looking lovely' without any opinions, or tones.

Excuse me for being sensitive but its starting to get me down. This is not the only thing. I just one person, to come in and say ONE nice thing umprompted about my home.

Blue is nice, but keep it in the alcoves for better effect.

Hmm! we have a Sofa Workshop near us. Might have to do some investigating and set up a sofa fund. Off to google

stillsqiffy you are allowed to hijack seeing as in doing so you evidenced bold is a good thing!

That's a gorgeous colour. Your room sounds like it will be very restful.

When we first decorated our place (19 years ago now - eep!) I painted the spare bedroom walls an off-white and the ceiling a gorgeous cerulean blue. I used to go in there, lie on the bed and imagine I was on a Greek Island...

I also did a muriel on the living room wall (meant to be temporary but was there for 10 years), a forest with a castle and beyond it a bay, centaurs, unicorns, winged horses, dragons, fauns, fairies and mermaids, amongst other things. It was fab.

fruitbeard thank you! I like the sea feel of this too, which is quite appropriate seeing as we live 10 mins from the sea!

jealous of your living 10 mins from sea - I grew up in a similar location and there are days when I hate living in landlocked London!

Now I know you're seasideish, I like the sound of it even better - the light will play off it beautifully.

Mind you, when we had the spare room redecorated as DD's nursery, it needed some work doing so we got builders in to do that and decorate as well. The bloke said to DH 'Coo, was it like that when you moved in? That's really horrible!' - instead of admitting we'd chosen the colour ourselves DH laughed and nodded - wimp!

I love blue in a house and don't think it's cold at all. Inspired by The Harbourmaster Hotel in Aberaeron (do go if you've got the money it's fab) I'm going to paint one wall of my living this colour.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 25/09/2009 09:54

oh thats a nice colour - the darker of them.

Sunshinemambo · 25/09/2009 09:58

That's living room!

Yes it's the darker one I want. It is really rich and warm on the walls.

MrsFawlty · 25/09/2009 10:08

I like feature walls. We have one in this colour. It looks ace, quite Scandinavian and very cosy.

I think that blue looks lovely. Beige is so meh.

MillyR · 25/09/2009 10:09

Almost every room in my house is blue or greenish-blue. I was unaware that this might be contentious!

I love the orange sofas though; it might make me experiment with some colour other than blue.
