an example:

We have had a hell of a building nightmare. We have, to cheer ourselves up, decorated our front room, almost done, we spent a long time prepping walls, repairing damage to ceiling, changing light fittings, cutting in carefully.

Because we have not chosen 'beige', neutral or a variety of, which appears to be the trend at the moment with our friends, not one person appears able to say 'your room is looking lovely'.

the comments are:

oh, I thought you were doing all the wall that colour?

You are doing all the wall that colour? oh.

Yes, its nicer than I thought it would be

Well it makes the room look bigger at least.

Blue? interesting choice?

Yeeees, lovely.

We have had so much headache and lived in such chaos that just something positive to recognise how hard we are working to rectify our tip of a home would be appreciated.

I know its not about anyone else, its about us and if we like it. I just would sometimes like my friends to not be so honest, and just say 'looking lovely' without any opinions, or tones.

Excuse me for being sensitive but its starting to get me down. This is not the only thing. I just one person, to come in and say ONE nice thing umprompted about my home.

dammit. the colour is dusted damson.

LadyGlencoraPalliser · 23/09/2009 18:09

Where's the sticky-out tongue emoticon to use on all the people who hate terracotta? And lilac.
Our new living room has three lilac walls. The fourth wall is a deep reddish plum.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 23/09/2009 19:45

Oh dear. I am now stressing about the colour - we were going to paint the whole wall blue. On account of so much white with shelves, mirror, computer cabinet being white, breaking up the blue. And now I am not so sure...will my friend's think I am really mad? I cannot discuss with DH, or rather its all we are doing, as he has No Vision until it is done!

Pav I love that blue! Your living room sounds lovely.

Our front room has a teal wall and everyone said it sounded awful until we got it finished and now they love it.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 23/09/2009 20:46

oh teal - i lurve teal, but DH thought it was too dark but he did not think this blue was? We found a lovely one by craig & rose, but it just was not great for our ikea like front room (not sure how that happened!).

I might try to pursuade him to do an teal accent wall and blinds in the loft room if we have it not DD .

I feel less bothered now, thanks all for bigging me up again!

OP posts:
expatinscotland · 23/09/2009 22:06

oh, NO. NOT teal.

MrsGokWantstogocampingagain · 23/09/2009 23:02

Pav I would stay with the colour in the alcove.

What is the door furniture, light fittings etc. like? Silver or brass?

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 24/09/2009 08:03

door fittings are currently revolting brass but they are going as we are having the doors replaced, so they will be plain silver, light fittings - light itself is this and sockets are plain white.

Teal is lovely Expat!! I love it!

expatinscotland · 24/09/2009 09:24

Teal very dated. Like lilac and peach.

Kayzr · 24/09/2009 09:27

I think it is quite modern and cool! But I have to agree about lilac and peach.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 24/09/2009 10:02

I think with teal, it has to be the right shade/tone, luminous is not good, smokey is great.

I think we will paint the fireplace blue - have just put the computer cabinet in situ and it covers up too much of the blue!!! all that lovely cutting in around the white and you can't even see it . Need some more.

Kayzr · 24/09/2009 10:05

We have this teal with the cookie dough. It is just one wall and it is lovely!

MrsGokWantstogocampingagain · 24/09/2009 10:08

Oooh! I likey. Just thinking about the mirror and whether some silver in the frame might be an idea, but am not sure.

Like this but obviously a wall mirror

distressed silver mirror

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 24/09/2009 10:15

Oh i like that mirror - that is it, that is the style I am wanting, but mantle style, as in flat bottomed...I like the silver in it...

Now, we need a rug. DH said I cannot have red. I am very pleased I never bought the beautiful big bold red rug I saw in Debenhams a couple of months ago. Only reason I did not was because it was reduced from £250 to £100 (or something like that 75% sale)and the offer ended that day, i had DHs card and the shop assistant did not let me use it! Clearly was not meant to be...

Even DH noticed that my friend was less than complimentary about our front room...and DH never notices stuff like that. He was offended too!

this? or www.chandeliersandmirrors.co.uk/kentwell.html (they do both in silver or white)

OP posts:
PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 24/09/2009 10:19

obviously I mean style - not paying that price for a mirror!

StillSquiffy · 24/09/2009 10:23

Stick to your guns Pav. Everyone thought I was mad, totally mad, when I ordered sofas to be made with bright orange velvet. Even the woman at the upholsterers tried to dissuade me.

They all ate their words once they were finished and in place with all the other bits

Kayzr · 24/09/2009 10:25

StillSquiffy, I was thinking OMG NOOOO!! But actually they are really nice and really suit the room.

PavlovtheForgetfulCat · 24/09/2009 10:27

stillsquiffy lovely! We almost bought orange sofa. obviously before we decided on the blue for our room! But we did not want to pay the fortune dirty filthy sofas were charging, instead picked up a bargain bin end sofa the kids can trash - which is in fact lovely and very very comfy but only £400.

I like bold!

expatinscotland · 24/09/2009 10:27

noddyholder · 24/09/2009 10:48

Those sofas are gorgeous

MrsGokWantstogocampingagain · 24/09/2009 14:51

Pav, I prefer the second mirror definatly.

Squiffy those sofas are absolutly fabulous. Wondeful colour. Where did you get those made?

hullygully · 24/09/2009 15:00
