rather than virtual friends?
How long do you have to be on MN to be a "friend"? Do you all know each other really? Does it matter to you? Does it make you not post on some threads as you feel you are gate crashing a clique? Does me.

MN can sometimes feel a bit like Cheers.

Y'know, a familiar face walks in and everyone yells 'Norm!'. Unless that's not their name. I might start doing it anyway.

lou33 · 21/09/2009 18:23

no its more like hotel california

you can check out any time you like but you can never leave

Lulubee · 21/09/2009 18:26

I feel the same way, but there are names I recognise and I always read their posts with glee interest. Like Shiney frinstance, and Riven and Hecate and OrmIrian and Anyfucker... don't know why those ones particularly stick in my head though...

Sometimes I just find keeping up with a thread too exhausting - by the time I've read all of it I can no longe be arsed to post. Specially when it's a ruckus.

serenity · 21/09/2009 18:28

If it helps, I recognise every single posting name on this thread so far - so no-one on here is completely invisible. Admittedly I am a serial lurker on a huge array of threads, so very few people escape my evil gaze

MaggieBeauLeo · 21/09/2009 18:30

Purple!!!!!!

how you doing!!!??!?!?!

(seriously, I like your posts even though I name-change too often for you to know who I am probably. I don't mind leaving no impression on people).

differentID · 21/09/2009 18:30

purplepeony, I think eberyone has felt like that at some point. I know there are a few posters who I am a bit closer to than others- often due to similar sense of humour, etc. But we will usually try and say hello, depends how fast a thread is moving at a particular time.

Just post until your fingers can post no more!

mummyhill · 21/09/2009 18:34

Some of us do know each other in real life and name change for stuff we don't want to share iyswim. So yes we will greet each other in that fashion. As someone else said there are times when you click with a personality and hit it off and tend to greet each other like long lost friends. People who meet on the antenatal boards also tend to get quite strong bonds and will greet each other as bosom buddies else where on the forum cause you go through 9 months sharing quite personal stuff so do really begin to feel as if you know each other.

Stick around and join in where ever you want regardless and one day you will be just as prone to doing it as the rest of us

ElieRM · 21/09/2009 18:41

I know what you mean peony, I am a moderator for a board in Switzerland so am pretty high profile, although I have to say, since i joined MN, my moderation time has slipped. On MN, I am just another person.
I will look out for you and give you a cheery hello when I see you post. Only if you do the same for me though.

differentID · 21/09/2009 18:45

You just have to push in. And telling rude stories always help.
