when the main ingredient is sugar and according to the label there are 5200 calories per medium jar!! That's 80 calories per spoonful.

Don't think I don't like it - I can demolish a jar in one sitting and have to stop myself from buying the stuff.

I think they're misleading us, showing it being given to dch at breakfast as 'good for you' with - what was it? - two whole hazelnuts per 'serving' !!

I agree, I think it's disgusting to advertise it as a healthy breakfast.

My DC's are constantly asking for it now but I refuse to buy it.

SgtAngua · 21/09/2009 16:26

No, this winds me up too. How can anything containing that much sugar & fat be good for you. ( & don't even get me started on breakfast cereals marketed at kids!!)

InMyLittleHead · 21/09/2009 16:44

Yeah, it's bollocks. Wasn't there a whole thing about some breakfast cereals being penalised for claiming to be healthy? Can't understand how Frosties can be considered anything other than confectionary.

MrRileysPies · 21/09/2009 16:44

Yes, but any breakfast is better than no breakfast so, in that respect, Nutella for breakfast isn't bad for you. School performance was improved regardless of the quality of breakfast eaten. T'was on that Dr Regan programme where she debunked a lot of "health" myths. Her conclusion was stop worrying about your kids' crap cereals - 'tis a small thing in the scheme of their diet. Breakfast, any breakfast, is teh key.

tearinghairout · 21/09/2009 16:46

I'm annoyed with myself at being taken in by the advert as an excuse for buying the stuff. Dch think that adverts are gospel truth. How do they get away with it?

OP posts:
tearinghairout · 21/09/2009 16:49

But Riley if we know it's crap, for 'special occasions' only, or now & then, that's fine. It's being promoted as 'healthy' that really gets my goat - how can it be right if dch get the idea that it's healthy?

OP posts:
MrRileysPies · 21/09/2009 16:51

You'd have to be pretty thick to think that. If your kids think it's healthy then you just tell them it's not. But I don't think it's the work of the devil either if on wholemeal toast in the morning.

Judy1234 · 21/09/2009 16:59

They were peddling this stuff like heroin on the ski slopes last winter - big inflated tent thing giving out free samples, just like a pusher would with cocaine. Sugar is pushed on to chidlren at every turn. It packs out ketchup and is in all the supposedly healthier cereals and mueslis.

tearinghairout · 21/09/2009 17:01

I find nutella horribly addictive. I can't have just a little bit, has to be the whole jar, just about. So I try not to buy it.

And Riley - faced with a being told something by me and the opposite by the telly, my dch will believe the telly every time!!

OP posts:
tearinghairout · 21/09/2009 17:02

being. Not 'a being'!

MrRileysPies · 21/09/2009 17:05

But that's their job to tell you you're wrong [friendly non-patronising ]. I use it to bribe my fussy youngest to eat peanut butter sandwiches. Put tiny smear of Nutella on bread and then peanut butter - but she sees teh Nutella when teh sandwich is cut and then eats. Once per week?

SheWillBeLoved · 21/09/2009 17:07

80 calories per spoonful...?

I'm eagerly waiting for a Cadbury's Fruit & Nut to be advertised as healthy. Nuts, milk, and fruit? Obviously better giving your kids one of those for breakfast rather than Nutella.

mosschops30 · 21/09/2009 17:07

Surely teaching your childrem that everything they see on tv is not always real or to be believed would be a better option if the 'healthy' tag bothers you that much.

It cant be that big-a-deal if your dcs are eating healthily the rest of the day can it, to have a slice of toast with nutella on a couple of days a week isnt going to undue all the fruit/veg/meat/protein etc etc they get

Nutella is hardly the work of the devil!

mosschops30 · 21/09/2009 17:08

un-do not undue

francagoestohollywood · 21/09/2009 17:20

Nutella is divine and my paediatrician assured us that a breakfast made by a piece of toast with nutella and freshly squeezed orange juice is a good breakfast for dd (who last yr was quite skinny).
You need less than a teaspoon to spread on a piece of toast , therefore it's 80 calories + the bread, it is not to start the day with!

bargainhuntingbetty · 21/09/2009 17:22

A standard bowl of cereal (i.e 2 wheetabix) is about 180 cals per bowl so I know which one I would be chosing.

Bucharest · 21/09/2009 17:23

Fancy meeting you here Franca!
I was just going to say that here in Italy it's the national football team who advertise it, and they seem to be doing OK on it.....
That said, my daughter (who loves the stuff) will not be getting it for her breakfast any time soon, not while I'm in charge of the breakfast table....

geordieminx · 21/09/2009 17:24

Hmmm weetabix or nutella on toast.....hmmmmm tricky

bargainhuntingbetty · 21/09/2009 17:25

Indeed Geordie. Im with you.

mosschops30 · 21/09/2009 17:27

think I will be buying a little jar of nutella just to see

francagoestohollywood · 21/09/2009 17:27

My children eat very healthy meals and lots of fruit and veg, to be honest a piece of toast and nutella at breakfast is not going to compromise their health
Also in Italy we traditionally ate "sweet" food for breakfast, we don't have puddings after the main meal, for instance.

francagoestohollywood · 21/09/2009 17:29

eat.
Bucharest, how hideous are Nutella adverts in Italy btw? Cannot stand it ...

Bucharest · 21/09/2009 17:31

How hideous is gormless old Buffon full stop.....Makes Kate Moss look like a Cambridge lecturer...

shonaspurtle · 21/09/2009 17:34

What's the difference between toast and Nutella and toast and marmalade?

Surely the key is to spread it thin so you get a taste but aren't actually eating a lot of it at one sitting?

Not that I'd eat Nutella for breakfast - bleurgh

KembleTwins · 21/09/2009 17:35

am currently sharing the table with my DTs who are eating nutella on toast for tea.

And yes, I did lick the knife after I'd spread it for them.
