when the main ingredient is sugar and according to the label there are 5200 calories per medium jar!! That's 80 calories per spoonful.

Don't think I don't like it - I can demolish a jar in one sitting and have to stop myself from buying the stuff.

I think they're misleading us, showing it being given to dch at breakfast as 'good for you' with - what was it? - two whole hazelnuts per 'serving' !!

I love nutella but it's not good on toast. So wrong. Sweet/savoury mixed.
I love it on its own, off a spoon. Mmmmmmmm.

(OP - I also agree that the advert is a bit misleading - it's so obviously misleading though, it just makes me laugh. They should just market it as what it is - a yummy treat food. Everyone needs treats. Not a daily breakfast! Who really believes that would be good for you, though?)

Oh baconandeggs, I love sweet/savour mixed! I love spreading apricot jam on focaccia

Bucharest, poor Buffon. He is a nice guy. I don't like footballers, but he is one of the few I have respect for.

shubiedoo · 21/09/2009 17:41

Well, it is a good source of vitamin E from the nuts, and it contains milk too, so it's actually healthier than jam. Little children need calories and if they eat a variety of other food, Nutella is not evil...

MrsVik · 21/09/2009 17:45

In Germany nutella is a very much accepted breakfast food. Like kids in the UK grow up eating marmite, kids here grow up eating nutella. I wouldn't go as far as to call it 'healthy' but kids need energy and fat, and breakfast is the best time to give it to them

So long as you balance it out with healthy lunches and dinners, I see no reason for not giving it to kids.

bergentulip · 21/09/2009 18:02

My children eat it for breakfast, as a treat. But then, DH is German so it's pretty normal.

Nothing wrong with a slice of toast and nutella, and then some fruit and a glass of juice to wash it down. Everything in moderation.

Oh, and this morning, my son had a lolly in his bread roll as well!!! DH had just been to Germany and brought back these strange breakfast roll things with him, and they have a small lolly sticking out the top. Not something I usually condone, but they have to have fun sometimes

blueshoes · 21/09/2009 18:02

Franca, it was when I went to visit a friend in Venice that I saw the most enormous gold jar of nutella in their kitchen. It must have been like a beach ball. You Italians know your nutella.

francagoestohollywood · 21/09/2009 18:13

We do blueshoes! When I was a child they used to sell tiny plastic pots of nutella (the amount of a spoonful) for the equivalent of roughly 10p. On of my fav childhood memory is eating it painfully slowly and reading comics!

Bergen I'm intrigued by the lolly roll!

kreecherlivesupstairs · 21/09/2009 18:23

I think it is disgusting stuff, dd loves it and ocassionally has it in her sandwiches for school. I understand it is part of the rations for Swiss soliders.
TBH, I'd rather give her that, than she goes to school without eating. She has the most appalling appetite so whatever it takes is my motto.

blueshoes · 21/09/2009 18:26

Franca . Nutella, nature's perfect food ...

Bucharest · 22/09/2009 08:09

After my post yesterday......dd had bread and nutella for breakfast this morning and

As Kreecher says, my dd is also the most appalling eater, so having run through the usual suspects, toast, cereal, eggs, I just shoved the jar of nutella at her.

Buda · 22/09/2009 08:15

DS likes it too and whilst I am aware that it's not exactly a health food I don't object to him having it for breakfast sometimes. However if he has it he also has to eat some cheese as well. I figure then he has had something a little bit more sustaining.

timmette · 22/09/2009 08:51

Here in Belgium it is almost an institution and I don't see the problem if combined with a helathy diet.It is one of my favourite breakfasts . My dh is Dutch and they regularly eat chocolate sprinkles and shavings with butter on bread.

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 22/09/2009 09:00

Here in my little piece of France we eat Nutella slathered on petit pains au lait, so more sugar! TBH all the cereals here are choko/choco/sucre something anyway.

The rest of their daily foodstuffs are fresh bread, meat, cheese, fruit & veg so not bothered by their breakfast.

Plus, it's yummy.

Portofino · 22/09/2009 09:02

Ooh yes - we've has the chocolate sprinkles too. Prefer nutella myself. Dd will normally have that or honey on toast for breakfast together with a strawberry actimel.
