not an AIBU as such - I'd just like a genuine sounding of opinion

No.No way. fark off. I don't like dogs.

cheesesarnie · 07/09/2009 22:31

id not go on holiday with friends and if they had dc and a dog,im sure id prefer the dog by the end of the holiday!

fluffles · 07/09/2009 22:33

i know my friends well enough to know if they are 'take the dog' or 'kennel the dog' type people.

it's kind of like babies when in shared accomodation

I don't mind dogs, and wouldn't object to the dog itself (depending on the dog, obviously) but I would be very reluctant to stay in a cottage that allowed dogs, as in my (albeit limited) experience they tend to be pretty smelly. So I suppose that would make it a no.

2rebecca · 07/09/2009 22:48

No, the houses tend to be more smelly and I don't like dogs much. My friends tend to be like me though and work and not have time consuming pets.

GrimmaTheNome · 07/09/2009 22:51

It would depend on the dog, the accommodation and the type of holiday. But if the accommodation and type of holiday was suitable for a dog we'd be taking our own anyway (a friendly very unsmelly undirty dachshund)

nooka · 07/09/2009 23:10

I would consider the dog to be part of their family, and so of course coming too. If I didn't like the dog I wouldn't suggest going on holiday with them. Likewise I woudln't suggest going on holiday with a family that didn't like my dog (if I had one). But then I have only ever been on holiday with family, and I like dogs. Most dogs hate kennels (perhaps not quite as much as cats though) so it's not something I would ever expect a family to do unless they absolutely had to, and certainly not when self catering. Surely the idea of self catering is that it is like home but somewhere else?

FfreckleFface · 07/09/2009 23:20

We've done this, hatwoman. Big group of friends renting a cottage, back in the days when it was just Bloke, Boydog and I (none of our friends would consider holidaying with us now we have Girldog and little Ff too...).

I did the booking, asked everyone if they would mind us bringing the puppy - no one did - and Bloke and I paid the extra deposit the owners asked for because we were taking a dog.

If they're good friends, they'll probably assume you're wanting to take the dog.

hatwoman · 07/09/2009 23:25

to the people who've said stuff about discussing it first, or only suggesting going on holiday with people who'd be happy with dogs - see my post of 9.59.

to ingles - but are you sure your pretty cocker could cope with a big lab ? they all live in towns but like the country.

fluffles - we haven't really had the dog long enough to be down firmly in one camp or another. when we've been abroad he's been in kennels once and he's been looked after by my fil once. we haven't had a holiday in the UK since having him. (apart from a couple of days in a hotel that accepted dogs)

thesecondcoming - you don't take dogs on holiday because they need a break! you take them on holiday because if you're going to be walking and romping round in the countryside they will love it; because they are part of the family and you enjoy their company; and because it's difficult to do anything else.

2rebecca - "My friends tend to be like me though and work and not have time consuming pets" rather seems to imply that I don't work. or that having time consuming pets is incompatible with working. it's generally (though not always) incompatible with office jobs with long hours but not with a whole range of other forms of work. perhaps the existence of other (pet compatible) forms of working have passed you by. if you didn't mean to sound snotty then I retract my snotty response. but you did sound a bit harsh.

thanks for the other responses too. I suspect that a couple of the families don't even know we have a dog! the whole thing has been a rather moveable feast with an ever-flowing ebb of people - with some people dropping out, some joining in and plans changing. it's not like 2 or 3 families who decided to go on holiday together and then discussed where etc. much more a group of people who don;t live close together who want to get together at a particular time of year trying to work out the best way of doing it. I'll email them all tomorrow and sound them out.

No way. I hate dogs and I hate dog owners.

hatwoman · 07/09/2009 23:33

how very rational of you nancy. thanks for that contribution.

FatFree · 07/09/2009 23:35

No bloody way would i want to go on holiday with someones dog! My idea of hell to be honest!

nooka · 07/09/2009 23:39

Sounds like a plan. Always worth checking to see how many other people might be bringing their dogs too - lots of dogs might be interesting!

florence2511 · 07/09/2009 23:46

I don't like dogs at all so would prefer fellow holiday makers to leave them at home.

Lovesdogsandcats · 08/09/2009 00:04

The dog taking for me would be a deal breaker - as in, if I could not take the dog, I would not go. So, if people did not want my dogs with them that week, I would cancel.

nancy66 I hate dog haters. A lot.

Clary · 08/09/2009 00:11

hatwoman, I think yr later posts make it clear that this is more complicated than my pals the dog-owners saying to me "shall we all go away together next summer" and me assuming (or not) that they woul dbring the dog.

Yes I think you need to email everyone and say are they all OK with the dog etc. It's fine to ask, esp if some of the people aren't such good pals.

FWIW I have also found the houses that accept dogs can be a bit doggy - I am sure yr dog is clean and fragrant but other people's aren't, always.

SomeGuy · 08/09/2009 00:15

I would quite like having a dog with me on UK s/c holiday, as we don't have one, like dogs but won't get one, and it would make a nice change.

Stannie · 08/09/2009 06:27

It wouldn't bother me as long as dog was well behaved and civilised. Bit like other people bringing their children really..

vinblanc · 08/09/2009 07:23

For us, the only reason to consider a s/c holiday in the UK is so we could take our dog. I would prefer to go on holiday with the dog than with another family.

However, if we did go on holiday with another family, they would fall in love with our dog.

Being in the great outdoors is so much more fun with a dog.

troutpout · 08/09/2009 07:32

It would be a NO from me

piscesmoon · 08/09/2009 07:47

I would only do it if we had separate accomodation near each other. I wouldn't share because I would be on edge the whole holiday-it would make the dog my responsibility if it chewed things, sat on the sofa etc. I like dogs.
