to expect to find kids clothes that actually fit?

My ds is 2.6, and I have real difficulty finding trousers to fit! Summer is fine, as he is in shorts most of the time, but when it comes to long trousers, it's a nightmare. He's not especially thin, just a 'normal' size, but all the trousers are huge around the waist, and the legs are so baggy! Not that I want him in skinny jeans or anything, but just a nice fitting pair. If I get a smaller size, they are too short. I do have some with adjustable waists, but they can be uncomfortable when they are all ruched at the back.
Do they only make clothes for all these obese children we keep hearing so much about?!

Me too, well DS. I used cloth nappies so was used to buying a size bigger and either rolling them up double or buying the side tab or 3/4 length trousers. All his shorts were 3/4 on him. He needed 18-24month with a cloth nappy

Now he is in pants I have had to go back a size but have realised all his trousers are flapping at the ankles. It doesnt help he seems to have shot up all in the legs the last year

He ode have a few pairs of Gap cargo style trakkies but even they are getting short and thye seem to have faded a lot but are ok for play school. His everday trousers I just have to tighten on the waist or if we go out and he has newer trousers on I have to put a cloth over the top to hold them up

My kids are very slim, we rely mainly on Gap and Next for trousers.

Also the very cheapest £2 joggers from Asda are quite skimpily cut - we had a pile of these for potty training.

chickbean · 03/09/2009 20:21

My 3-year old is the same. TU adjustable trousers work for him though.

And has anyone noticed that clothes manufacturers think that babies will have enormous heads? Nearly every hooded top I have had for my children (when less than a year) fit the body but were way too big for their head.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/09/2009 20:54

I am sitting here enviously reading about GAP, Tu, Tesco etc. Bony maloney resisted all offers of a new outfit today. She got bored of everything sliding down if we went for length or being too short if girth was the criteria.

IdontMN2makecopyforlazyjournos · 03/09/2009 20:59

DS is the same. Asda tops are fine but bottoms are a disaster. Even on smallest button the waist is huge on him.

Boots trousers seem to come up very long, so lately I have been buying him age 18 months - 2 years (he's 2 and a half) whihch seem to fit.

CheerfulYank · 03/09/2009 21:06

Mini Boden has slim fit jeans for boys in their latest catalogue, you might give them a try.

MrsJohnDeere · 03/09/2009 21:12

Boden trousers are the only thing that seem to fit my very skinny 3.4yo ds properly.

Next have adjustable waists too, but I find that the trousers are then too short.

FlyMeToDunoon · 03/09/2009 21:29

I have two skinny DDs.
For the 10 yr old Gap Slim fit jeans are great and are plain enough so that boys could wear.
For the 2 yr old Boden bootleg sweatpants are the best fit.

School clothes are a nightmare.

GoAwayMrWappy · 04/09/2009 10:42

I'm going to try Boden (as long as it's not too expensive!) as you all seem to say its good. Curse you all if its not!!

I bought girls cargo pants for 2yo DS2 as was a better fit. Luckily no butterflies or flowers!

GoAwayMrWappy · 04/09/2009 10:42

Isn't there a discount for Boden on here somewhere?

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 04/09/2009 10:51

Vertbaudet/Boden/Zara all fantastic.

E-bay is good for Boden, or you can buy new and sell on e-bay for about what you paid for it which makes it seem a lot less expensive.

There are always a millon Vertabaudet codes in the saving money etc section, so you can get things very cheaply.

WhereTheWildThingsWere · 04/09/2009 10:56

Lots of good Boden codes, XNHT which gives you £10 off a £30 spend is my favourite, and can be used multiple times.

stealthsquiggle · 04/09/2009 11:18

That reminds me - I must get around to selling the lovely Boden cords which DS grew into and out of in about 6 weeks (they were a present) and see if I can get enough to buy him some bigger ones.

GoAwayMrWappy · 04/09/2009 11:31

Thank you WTWTW!

muddleduck · 04/09/2009 13:31

Stealthsquiggle - what size are the cords? I want some for my dss (4 and 2)
[hopefull emoticon]

stealthsquiggle · 04/09/2009 14:09

Sorry to disappoint, muddleduck, but my 6.10yo DS grew into and back out of (last winter) Boden age 7/8.

legalalien · 04/09/2009 14:15

I agree re the GAP trousers for boys - they do have slimfit ones here in the UK and without them I think my poor child (4, nearly 5) would have his trousers falling down most days! The chinos and cords at

little legend

are also good (and on half price sale at present).

busybutterfly · 05/09/2009 12:39

Get some snake belts. Best thing ever for jean/trousers that are too big round the middle!!

Ineedmorechocolatenow · 06/09/2009 11:17

What are snake belts?

expatinscotland · 06/09/2009 11:23

DD1 is especially thin and tall.

And sort of trousers or skirts are a nightmare to fit her. Even adjustable waist ones wind up looking ridiculous because they have to be pulled in so much. She mostly wears dresses.

All the clothes seem to be cut for children with a weight problem.

pranma · 06/09/2009 12:00

gap are good for the slimmer child-I bought a pair for dgs [2.11]age 3 and waist although adjustable was on the snug side.

Hi Ineedmorechoc, snake belts simply have an S shape where the buckle is so kids can loop one end of S into belt loop. Makes it very easy for toddlers who are potty training or find buckles too hard (as most do). Bought expensive ones from Letterbox then cheap ones from ebay and I hate to say it but the expensive ones were (are) far better!!

FimbleHobbs · 06/09/2009 14:59

DS is like that.

We like
Jasper Conran at Debenhams
Boden skinny jeans (they just look like normal ones on him)
Random European/designer makes (from TK Maxx or charity shops
Gap

And Next is ok although not brilliant.

Of course this means that to afford to feed the family as well as clothe him, all his clothes haved to be bought in sales, off Ebay, and in charity shops. So a pain if he needs anything particular, or in a rush
