to be sick of washing up recycling!

I hate washing up hence I have a dishwasher!
But all recycling has to be cleaned, we have alternate weeks collection (ie tins/cans one week, card/paper/plastic the next) so other than they wont take it unless its clean, I dont want to store manky cans and plastic bottles for 2 weeks!
It just seems to be multiplying and I always seem to be washing or rinsing cans or plastic bottles!
I totally know IABU but it drives me bonkers!

floatingonpinkcloud · 29/08/2009 22:20

Thing on here as long as someone insults someone it is ok and they get a big thumbs up! Not a very nice site here is mumsnet and really cant be arsed with this anymore! I didnt actually moan about cleaning things out only that i have fished things out i accidently put in at least i got out and i now have a bruise up my arm to prove it!!!

Sod this whole site it is awful thanks all but a big thumbs down for mumsnet as i find a lot of you are rather hurtful with your comments. Bye

EyeballsintheSky · 29/08/2009 22:23

Oh ok... See you then...

BitOfFun · 29/08/2009 22:48

Oooooh touchy!

May I be the first to say don't let the door hit your arse?

Nah, seriously, if you're srtill here, just grow a thicker skin, we are a lovely lot really- just a bit blunt. C'mon, you could fit right in

MamaGoblin · 29/08/2009 22:57

Ooooo, get her!

Oh come on, nobody had a go at you. And this is AIBU, you know. No prisoners.

Re. OP - I am bloody fed up with it too, but I do it all the same. DH cheats and puts some in the bin, which makes me grrr. Have discovered that plastic meat containers (ie. tray for the chicken) shrink when you pour boiling water on them - sterilising and saving space in your green box in one go!

Hmm, I think I will send that in to Woman's Own as a Top Tip. Might win a Teasmade or something.

Northernlurker · 29/08/2009 23:13

I have to say flouncing from mnet over recycling is a bit boden-wearing, cupcake wielding of you! You are plainly destined to have a long and happy time here now come out from under your recycling bin and get posting about your husband's funny little ways and your need for a really good autumn outfit

Dustinthewind · 29/08/2009 23:18

I'm a newbie, and I'm finding it a fairly scary forum to be honest. There seem to be a lot of landmines scattered around, with hair triggers.
So I'm tip toeing through some of the less formidable threads. I thought this was one!

Northernlurker · 29/08/2009 23:21

Just don't mention sausage rolls or ask who the moldies are.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 29/08/2009 23:22

Pffff

Oh hold on pinkcloud wasn't even the OP!!!

pinkie suggest AIBU maybe not your natural home... have a look at some other topics maybe...

As for the origial question - different places have different standards. I just have to swoosh with cold water which is not beyond my ken, but some places apparently your rubbish has to pass a "crystal clean" advert style sparkle test, and if it don't measure up, they chuck it all back into your front garden.

Fuck that.

Dustinthewind · 29/08/2009 23:23

See, that's the sort of helpful advice an innocent little wanderer needs.
Thank you.
Thank God I'm beyond breast feeding or choosing nappies.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 29/08/2009 23:24

There are no less formidable AIBU threads...

However for questions about, you know, being a parent and kids and stuff it is quite helpful.

Northernlurker · 29/08/2009 23:27

Oooh yes the nappy ladies are well scary - between the fluffybots and the fleece wraps - it's hell over there!

scottishmummy · 29/08/2009 23:42

ok quick user guide
sausage roll=old meat dried emulsified fats
moldie=as above

Dustinthewind · 29/08/2009 23:44

I see no reason why I should ever mention such items, and I hate moulds including blue cheese

Northernlurker · 29/08/2009 23:51

You sound all set then

SarfEasticated · 30/08/2009 07:25

To get back to the original post, I would like to use this thread as an opportunity to share my vision ( )

There is so much bloody rubbish generated in our daily lives, I think it should be down to the manufacturer to arrange for packaging to be reused. Instead of tetra paks there should be a return to milk bottles which can be washed and used again, rather than washed and recycled, same with drinks cans, and if they don't want to collect them there could be a refund on them.

what do you think?

macdoodle · 30/08/2009 09:28

oh my my so much for my light hearted thread then
Our recycling collectors are "very strict" - they have stickie things with a list of reasons why they havent taken it

yes quick rinse here to get big lumps of beanage of stuff - dont actually peel labells of either

beatiebow · 30/08/2009 09:57

Where do you live macdoodle? Years and years ago when I lived in Wellington they had just such a system when recycling was first introduced. You would put a box of stuff out and then get most of it given back to you!

Now here in Scotland you just put it all in the blue bin and get absolutely no feedback whatsoever-does make you wonder just how much of it actually gets recycled.

Alarielle · 30/08/2009 11:54

I can't believe you're expected to wash your recycling. I don't wash mine and it's just thrown into the brown bin. The thing is it is a waste of time and energy to wash them. The tins are heated to 1000 °C and turns to molten metal. Any labels, food etc. is carbonised and the scum is taken off the top. I've never seen a fridge or a car with meaty jelly chunks stuck to it .

SlartyBartFast · 30/08/2009 12:01

i am sure you don;t need to wash out tins.i just rinse them, i know people who stick them in dishwasher {shock] which seems excessive to me, i do stick glass jars in dish washer, which may seem excessive to other people. and purely rinse out plastics, you can do it with boiling water with lid on, give good shake, and they squash down, very rewarding.

SlartyBartFast · 30/08/2009 12:08

just read thread can't believe it caused a bun fight! hope you recycled the wrappers

claw3 · 30/08/2009 12:14

I remember reading somewhere that about 90% of recycling gets land filled because of contamination?

LovelyTinOfSpam · 30/08/2009 12:30

sarfeast actually that is a very good point. Here are we all being made to feel terribly guilty about the amount of waste we generate, landfill etc etc when really we don't have much choice - if things come with lots of packaging then obviously we have to chuck it away.

Hmm.

But of course I bet the manufacturers argue that if things aren't packaged nicely then people are less likely to buy them, or pay a premium for them, which is certainly the case with perfumes face creams etc, the snazzier the box the more alluring the product.

We are so easily manipulated really it's depressing.
