To stop DH taking DS (6) to a concert at the O2 in London?

undercoverelephant · 25/08/2009 15:50

DS is nuts about Green Day (American pop/rock group).
DH bought 2 tickets to see them at the O2 in London in October and wants to take DS.
I think DS is too young - the concert is in the evening, about an hour's journey away, and might blow my little darling's eardrums
Am I being unreasonable?

Yes What a fab DH you have, can he be my Dad too???

JeMeSouviens · 25/08/2009 15:55

If there is no age limit on the tickets, then he should go with his great Dad.

Unless of course you are secretly a Green Day fan and want to go in his place.

pjmama · 25/08/2009 15:55

Aw he'll love it! And probably remember it fondly for the rest of his life.

Let him go!

GypsyMoth · 25/08/2009 15:55

wow....adore greenday!!

why on earth would you attempt to stop them??

you dont own your ds,presumably his dad is the other parent here!! buy some of those earmuff things that celebs kids wear backstage!

would be more worried about Billie Joe's bad language to be honest.

undercoverelephant · 25/08/2009 15:55

You're not 6, are you?
Sigh...perhaps I am being an unreasonable killjoy mum.

mosschops30 · 25/08/2009 15:57

YABU, your ds will love it. IMHO little events like this are the things kids remember, he will alwasy remember going to see his first gig with his dad

undercoverelephant · 25/08/2009 15:57

Hee hee hee hee!
Actually I'm unperturbed by bad language etc... I think Green Day are fairly mediocre. And DS has been to football matches, so would probably be OK with crowds etc.
Perhaps I am BU!

OP posts:
GypsyMoth · 25/08/2009 15:58

6 or 16...where is the problem?

Harimosmummy · 25/08/2009 15:58

I think you are being a bit unreasonable.

My DSD1 saw Spice girls when she was 5... ( and it has to be said, your DS has better taste in music !!)

They will have a fab time.

Don't worry about the noise or the language. It's one night. And he's with a responsible adult. My DSD1 fell asleep at the end of Spice girls!!!

Make a plan to get home quickly though.

BigGobMum · 25/08/2009 16:01

YABU - 6 is not too young at all! Babies and toddlers -no but 6 is fine (as long as in the seating and not floor standing).

southeastastra · 25/08/2009 16:02

took my ds who was then 7 to o2 not long ago, it's great! let him go

OrmIrian · 25/08/2009 16:03

No YANBU. Your DH should be taking me and my DS#1 instead!

Seriously yabu. It will be a fantastic experience.

undercoverelephant · 25/08/2009 16:05

ILoveTIffany I think you might have a point. If I don't care about bad language/naughty rock stars' behaviour (and I really don't!) then I shouldn't factor DS' age into the matter.

To clarify, I'm not "stopping" DH taking DS (bad phrase here), just wondering if he should take him (ie, if he'll enjoy it or be overwhelmed)....

Now as for the Spice Girls....that I would object to

I have seen GD twice and just so you know there is obviously a LOT of bad language along with Billy Joe shoving his hands down his pants (and enjoying himself!) on stage.

It is very loud but would be a fantastic thing to say he's been to.

We're off to see them in Birmingham and I literally cannot wait!!

DaisyParker · 25/08/2009 21:28

I saw GD on the last tour & there was a mum with her little DS in front of us. He looked like he had an amazing time & I guess wouldn't have picked up on the swearing etc.

The 02 is probably a good venue to take him to as it will be very organised.

I would definitely get him some earplugs though!

Mothlene · 25/08/2009 21:29

YUBVU

Let him go.

blinder · 25/08/2009 21:36

YANBU 100+ decibels can damage a child's hearing unfortunately. Most concerts are a minimum of 110 dbs.

Try this link for tips on where to sit etc and get some ear-plugs, which your DS must wear.

Took my 6yo to Glastonbury - was a great experience for him, but I was careful not to sit in loud areas. Hope they have a lovely time.

thirtypence · 25/08/2009 22:24

Let him go - but I would get him some ear protection.

mumeeee · 25/08/2009 23:57

Let him go. But give him some ear plugs.

milknosugarplease · 26/08/2009 00:02

let him go, he'll love it!

how many 6 year olds can say their dad/mum took em to see their fave rock band ?

earplugs are good although the O2 is a really good venue-acoustically

although i would say if poss driving their would be good...bitch to get out of the car park after but at least ds can sleep as they will have to que up for the train and then will have to cram on train- its safe but irritating!

saw queen there and loved it!

PixiNanny · 26/08/2009 00:05

YABU, but right to be concerned. As long as your DH is cautious about how close he gets them to the stage if he brought standing tickets he'll be fine I vaguely remember a few small circle pits at the greenday gigs a few years back, but we couldn't get close enough to join in! We were gutted by that but it might make you feel better

Ear protection a must though, tbh the experience of being at a gig usually override the music itself!

God I need to go to a gig again!

undercoverelephant · 26/08/2009 08:08

Thank you everyone!
Perhaps I knew I was BU when I posted this But the sound/noise levels do concern me, and I couldn't find much on the web re: taking kids to gigs.
I guess I'm doing the classic overprotective parent thing because it seems only yesterday (sigh) that I was a (very small, spindly) teenager being squished in a mosh pit at various gigs/festivals. When you've been there/done that it makes you more cautious...
BUT the O2, seated far back from the stage (DH assures me!) and with responsible adult is a different matter.
And driving to the venue is something I hadn't considered...good idea.
I do want DS to enjoy himself, and he does love GD.
So they go with my blessing...just have to keep it quiet from DS2, who is 3 yrs, also a big fan and definitely NOT going!

OP posts:
milknosugarplease · 26/08/2009 08:13

contact the venure r.e noise etc but we were seated at the back..waaay at the back! and although loud wasnt ear numingly so (is numingly a word?)...he'll have a fantastic time! and if he doesnt...can i have the ticket !?

your ds has a great daddy!!!

DaisyParker · 26/08/2009 09:46

And what good taste your DS has!

When I was that age I liked any old chart rubbish!

curiositykilled · 26/08/2009 09:49

Green day is surely only appropriate for 6 year olds! lol

I would want DS to wear earplugs and would have to have a 'talk' about bad language first but would let him go.
