to think friends should childproof their house a little when I bring dd to stay?

plugs with no covers, exposed wires on a lead and tonnes of tiny tiny toys laying all over the house. Their kids are 5 and 2 so I understand their house doesn't need to be as child proof as I need for my 1.3 yr old but surely the chokeable toys could have been put away? I spent the whole visit retrieving plastic coins and playmobil bits from dd's mouth.

I try to have a clear round and deposit anything really dangerous out of the way as I have a 3yr old (never one for putting things in his mouth) and an 8 yr old. However, i think sometimes you just forget how little ones can be when yours are much older and out of that stage. I did have a friend once though when my daughter was 5 who passed comment that there was no stairgate and it was dangerous for her young child!!

I try and babyproof a bit when a baby comes round - it consists of making sure that one room (the living room normally) is reasonably safe - ie no tiny toys in there, they have to be confined to bedrooms when small guests are here, because, as I tell the DC, it isn't fair to have toys out that not everyone can play with. I usually try and dig out some age-appropriate toys, try and make sure there isn't anything that would be an obvious hazard, so the floor is clear, and the room is tidy etc, and that's it.

I don't use socket covers, as in the UK it is actually safer not to, and I don't know what you mean by exposed wires. If you mean that the actual wire is poking out through the plastic insulation, then, yes that is a hazard to everyone in the house regardless of their age and I would not hesitate to point it out. If you just mean that safely insulated electrical wires are visible, then I think you are being a bit unreasonable.

I would be a bit unimpressed if my friends with babies took issue with my childproofing - it is up to them to supervise, and while I try and make the environment as safe as possible, ultimately there is only so much I can do. And I would assume that someone visiting my house with a baby wouldn't actually be ever leaving them unsupervised anyway.

You don't need plug socket covers!!!!!!!

YABU.
But then I've never lived in a childproof house either as a child myself or now as a father.
Common sense stuff like keeping bleaches/ poisons/blades etc out of harms way should be just common practice children or no children but socket covers / small toys or other items.... Just keep an eye on your child.

WhatFreshHellIsThis

There's not been a single reported case of a child coming to harm from an electrical socket since the current design was adopted in the UK.

Yabu for using socket covers op.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 07/07/2016 02:07

Why are you having a pop at the op. I doubt she's listening. This thread is 7 years old. It's mediaeval.

allowlsthinkalot · 07/07/2016 14:38

YABU, I have a one year old, we have no Stair Gates or socket covers. We also have older children so lots of tiny toys. If you visit my house it's up to you to look after your child.

ghostyslovesheep · 07/07/2016 14:50

GIVEN THAT THE OP'S CHILD IS NOW SEVEN i SUSPECT YOU CAN ALL STOP TELLING THEM THEY ARE BEING UNREASONABLE Hmm

holy moly! you sound even worse than my sister who arrives at mine (DCs 6 and 4) and huffs around the house at the lego, no stair gate etc etc. Its been said by others. YABU - it's absolutely your responsibility to watch your child when visiting other people. I promise, when your DC is older you will feel the same....

SpringerS · 08/07/2016 19:59

FYI socket covers are way more hazardous than the standard 3 point socket.
