To be upset at dress ILs have just bought DD (6) ...

... I know I am a bit but MIL wanted to take DD dress shopping. She normally likes to leaf through Boden catalogue looking at the lovely clothes and she knows how she normally dresses and the things I normally buy ... DD is very much into nice dresses, skirts etc. I trusted MIL (she's also just bought DD2 a really lovely dress) so didn't set any parameters.

They came back with a black and fuschia dress made out of t-shirt material. Puffball skirt with fuschia top complete with ruched up sleeves and topped off with a black patent belt. They got age 10-11 so there was growing room in it. Oh and a silver quilted handbag with Sharpay written on it (from disney store). They spent £30 on entire outfit. The whole image makes her look 27 years old circa 1988.

I am gutted. DH says I'm over-reacting and I if there were complete no-nos then I should've said so. So yes in that sense I know I ABU but still ...

And more importantly, how do I now handle DD so she (a) doesn't wear this outfit ALL the time and (b) I don't make her feel bad as she clearly loves it.

your dd is six, she's allowed to have crap taste and wear tacky dresses now and again. It's part of the joy of childhood imo. She obviously loves it, and i think you are taking this far too seriously! Just let her wear it - ALL the time (it will wear out!!)

scottishmummy · 17/08/2009 19:16

sounds hideous, but do let her wear it.snigger discreetly

their heart is in right place, just got it wrong this time

She's 6 - if you can't get away with stuff like this at 6 when can you? DD's favourite dress is a hideous high school musical pink glittery number - which she likes to wear with her Hello Kitty leggings and pink sparkly shoes her aunt got her. She looks ridiculous but feels like a princess. I'm just making sure I get photos to show her when she's 16....

Chevre · 17/08/2009 19:21

this is hilarious! dd inherited a pvc leather look mini-skirt from her cousin when she was 3. i don't know where the hooker chic came from as sil is normally v. conservative. it remained in the dressing up box for occassions when dd wanted to play at being a street worker.

Wags · 17/08/2009 19:28

Similar to this maybe? If she is anything like my 6yr DD and mad on Hannah Montana she probably thinks its fab. Maybe let her wear it as a dressing up type dress. I have relaxed a lot on what DD chooses to wear and I have to say when we go somewhere that I want her to look OK she is happy to put on what I suggest (famous last words of course!)

chichichien · 17/08/2009 19:38

lipgloss on a 6 year old . Profiterole, you sick choux

MrsWeasley · 17/08/2009 19:42

Well I have a different situation in that my DD 10yo, asked, no nagged for a Boden skirt and in fairness it is lovely and ideal for summer, now its arrive she tried it on and loved it, 4 weeks later it still unworn and when I asked why she says she has gone off it and will only wear it as a dress one gust of wind and everyone will get an eyefull!

Kids Eh?

For your problem I would have an afternoon of craft and make a badge saying "Granny bought me this dress"

dress with leggings under it, weasle?

MrsWeasley · 17/08/2009 20:03

chichichien: Yes I think if I want it worn it will have to be leggins!

TheProfiteroleThief Love the "vaseline" lipgloss.

My mum used to put ordinary handcream in a little pot and call it "magic mending cream" and whenever my nephews or neices fell over they cried for Magic Cream! (SIL actually went into a chemist to ask for some! LOL)

wishingchair · 17/08/2009 20:05

OK OK OK!!!! I have conceded I am taking this way too seriously! DD said she liked the sleeves and that's why she picked it, she's not so keen on the black bit ... think you're right, good for dressing up and pretending to be pop stars etc etc.

This is the actual dress: here. However it has leggings under it here and because they got it miles too big for her, it comes to below her knees. But I take your point ... it isn't inappropriate, just not age appropriate IMO.

PS - curiositykilled: I mentioned boden just to describe MIL's usual tastes. Not got anything to do with anything really.

bruffin · 17/08/2009 20:24

bruffin · 17/08/2009 20:25

sorry crossposted

cheesesarnie · 17/08/2009 20:56

its not actually thatbad

we do vaseline lipgloss too

diddl · 18/08/2009 09:09

Depending how alike the dress is to the link that you posted,it doesn´t look much different to some of the Boden stuff that you can get.

SammyK · 18/08/2009 09:19

Oh it's not that bad, I agree put it with the dressing up clothes.

Had to laugh at it being waay too big, MIL does that here too.

Ok, I only have boys not girls, but I cant see whats wrong with it? Its nor revealing, it doesnt havr crass logos, I dontthink it looks like a grown up dress 'spoiling' a child, and I wish I'd been allowed cute dresses when i was little. But then again, I dont know your dd and if it would suit her etc.

BlehdyDM · 18/08/2009 09:44

She will regret it enough when she's older [flashbacks to wanting ra ra skirt and leggings], but she'll love it now, so why not?

hocuspontas · 18/08/2009 16:28

It's lovely. Not to your taste but something she chose herself.

Goblinchild · 18/08/2009 17:14

thesecondcoming!

I look at all the little girls with their mummies and reminisce when mine was small enough to be dictated to and dressed by me.
I now have a tall thin Goth, with all the trimmings.
Do I mind? Why should I?
I wore translucent cheesecloth, anklebells and did my floaty hippychick thing to my parents' bewilderment.
They'd die laughing at my hypocrisy if I laid down the law on fashion.
Let her wear it out!

thedollshouse · 18/08/2009 17:33

Tell MIL you have put it into storage as it is too big, then take it back and exchange it for something more suitable.
