I have no idea what you're talking about

(8 words)

Greensleeves · 11/08/2009 00:30

could you gibber about empathy/perspective/theory of mind and the different forms of emotional/psychological growth stunting that can result in a rigidity of view?

or sommat

Greensleeves · 11/08/2009 00:33

also the way people choose to perceive/present their disagreements with other people in a certain light to lend validity to their view - the martyr mentality, self-victimisation etc

by using words like "conquered" and "capitulate" on is borrowing from the discourse of oppression in order to endow one's position with the respectability associated with whistle-blowers and noble rebels

one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter etc

Thunderduck · 11/08/2009 00:34

Are you supposed to write about Samuel Johnson?

snice · 11/08/2009 00:35

See I knew someone clever would come along

The longer I post on MN the thicker I feel. I genuinely don't understand it

Thunderduck · 11/08/2009 00:40

I know that it's a Samuel Johnson quote and he was speaking of his ill health.

I thought that it was just him saying yes it will kill me eventually but I will not accept defeat yet even if the odds are against me.
I won't go quietly.

But what Greensleeves said is much better.

stitchtime · 11/08/2009 00:43

argggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

greeny, translation please... .... (but also a very grateful look from me)

The quote reminds me of Dylan Thomas' 'Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night'.

It's the same idea I think.

stitchtime · 11/08/2009 00:51

oooo, do you mean like fundamentalism in religion? that can stunt your emotional growth

OP posts:
Thunderduck · 11/08/2009 00:52

Though it could be applied to a number of situations a battle or war perhaps, or a feat of great endurance. Anything in which one is facing seemingly insurmountable odds.

stitchtime · 11/08/2009 00:52

thunder, what does that mean?

i am such a thicko. how do i end up having to do essays i am so unsuitable for doing.

Thunderduck · 11/08/2009 00:55

Insurmountable means impossible to over come. When everything is against you really. A task that it seems you cannot complete. An enemy that it appears cannot be defeated.

I'm rambling on here with no apparent destination I realise.

It's difficult to think when you have 'Here a llama, there a llama, and another little llama. Fuzzy llama, funny llama, llama, llama, duck, stuck in your head.

I've had the llama song stuck in my head all day and it's driving me crazy.

stitchtime · 11/08/2009 01:01

yes, i can understand the llama thing perfectly..
i meant the duck quote. the gentle duck??

OP posts:
Thunderduck · 11/08/2009 01:02

stitchtime · 11/08/2009 01:04

Thunderduck · 11/08/2009 01:04

LMAO.

Thunderduck · 11/08/2009 01:06

Dylan Thomas wrote it about his dying father. He was asking his father to fight, to not allow death to take him easily.

Here's the poem.

Do not go gentle into that good night,
Old age should burn and rave at close of day;
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.
Though wise men at their end know dark is right,
Because their words had forked no lightning they
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Good men, the last wave by, crying how bright
Their frail deeds might have danced in a green bay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Wild men who caught and sang the sun in flight,
And learn, too late, they grieved it on its way,
Do not go gentle into that good night.

Grave men, near death, who see with blinding sight
Blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay,
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

And you, my father, there on the sad height,
Curse, bless me now with your fierce tears, I pray.
Do not go gentle into that good night.
Rage, rage against the dying of the light.

Thunderduck · 11/08/2009 01:16

Perhaps returning to this tomorrow is best, before you go as loopy as I am.

Zalen · 11/08/2009 11:20

You all sound far too high brow for me, so I'll just mention the bit I did understand.

The Llama song is OK, consider yourself lucky, DS1 has discovered the Narwhal song! Arrgh

OrmIrian · 11/08/2009 11:24

It's DS#2 talking about bedtime.
