So keep it inside, you shouldn't make your pet someone else's problem. If the poison is on their property then I don't see how it is anyone other that your fault if the your cat eats it?

My cat is kept inside for her own safety, she is allowed in our garden under supervision. I wouldn't want her getting run over/eating poison so I keep her safe. Yes it means I have to change a litter tray but because she is my cat it is my problem.

Confuzzeled · 07/08/2009 18:03

My cat goes out but comes home to use her litter.

I heard a neighbour screaming "fucking cat, get out my fucking garden, dirty little bastard etc...". My cat came flying over the fence soaking wet, I don't think it did her any harm and I don't think she'll go near the garden again.

The cat you see in your garden may not be the one shitting in it. Cats are considered wild animals and you are not legally required to follow them around with a bag like you are dogs.

Telling your neighbours your going to put poison down will make you very unpopular. Putting poison down on purpose to kill another persons pet is plain, bloody evil.

Owning 15 cats is irresponcible and I think a call to the council or RSPCA is in order.

Morloth · 07/08/2009 18:05

Are cats native to Britain? If they are considered wild animals are you allowed legally to shoot them as they don't belong to anyone?

If they are wild animals how can they be pets?

BigGobMum · 07/08/2009 18:06

I dont think the Police spared much manpower trying to find out who was poisoning the cats I referred to in an earlier post!

SouthMum · 07/08/2009 18:15

If a cat wants to go outside then it is cruel to keep them in (unless they are ill of course).

Putting poison down to deal with someones pet is vile and is just as bad as some of the awful animal cruelty cases you hear about.

Saying "keep your cat" in is very simplistic and not helpful as it just doesn't work if the cat enjoys going outdoors.

When I get cat shit in my garden I just clean it up with a scoopy-thing and a plastic bag and then spray the area with water. As a cat / pet lover I accept its part of the whole joy of having these creatures in the world (but I do hate cat shit!)

Morloth · 07/08/2009 18:25

I assume a cat would enjoy being inside more than being poisoned/trapped/shot.

You love your cat (as I do mine), so you care about it. Other people don't love your cat and in many cases actively hate it.

Average lifespan of an outdoor cat is 4-5 years, average for an indoor 15-17 years (averages because I know there is going to be a bunch of anecdata)

Seems like a no brainer to me.

edam · 07/08/2009 18:26

Average lifespan of an outdoor cat 4-5 years? What?! Where on earth do you get those figures from?

FfreckleFface · 07/08/2009 18:29

YANBU.

If you have any bullets left, can you come and shoot the one who shites in my garden (bravest catvin the world, I've got Rottweilers ffs!) and then sits outside my front door at three in the morning, sending the dogs bananas.

Next time the baby gets woken up this way, I swear I am letting Girldog out.(Boydog, bless him, would be no use as cats scare him.)

SouthMum · 07/08/2009 18:32

I'm pretty sure its not legal to shoot a cat but think farmers are allowed?

Anyway its irrelevant whether its a wild animal or not. Its someones pet and only doing what is natural to them.

Spraying them with water usually works, although admittedly not as much fun as watching someones pet die a horrible death just because they dared to have a dump on someones precious lawn

Morloth · 07/08/2009 18:37

My vets (both here and in Oz) told me this however a quick google shows these:

petplace

wisegeek

cat-world

petlibrary

If I had a recurring problem with cats shitting in my garden and had tried all reasonable measures I would try to trap them and take them to the pound, if that didn't work I would consider shooting/poisoning them. Whether you think I am evil or not isn't relevant, I would do it and am not the only person - so if you let your cat's onto other people's property they are in danger.

SouthMum · 07/08/2009 18:41

Your right Morloth, I should have sat my cats down and told them I was keeping them in for their own good and explained to them its to prevent them being killed, but do you know I doubt they would have understood??

Don't get me wrong, if my cats wanted to stay indoors I'd have gladly let them, but they wanted to go out. So as a cat lover and a responsible pet owner I let them out as I didn't want to be cruel to them.

All of my cats (had about 20 over the years) have lived to around 13 (one of 19!)and most of them liked being outdoors for some of the day. The only cat I had that got run over was one of the ones that rarely went out and probably didn't have as much road sense as the others.

Morloth · 07/08/2009 18:45

They don't get to decide, they are cats. You close the door and don't let them out. See my point about averages and anecdata.

I don't care about whether you let your cats out. They are not mine, but if they are on my property they are my problem and will be dealt with. As I said, it doesn't matter how you feel about it - if you were that deeply concerned you would try to keep them off other people's land.

SouthMum · 07/08/2009 18:48

What is this a school playground? "My vet said......" Well my vet said its cruel to keep cats in so neeeerrr.....

Also LOL at "I'm not the only person" who'd kill a troublesome cat. I'm sure that James Gray wasn't the 'only person' who tortures horses but doesn't make him any less of a cretin.

Anyway doesn't matter. You probably don't live me so it will never be an issue. However as I said before if anyone tried to kill any of my pets for just doing what comes naturally to all of us then my foot would be meeting their face aswell as their arse.

Sure that 'I'm not the only one' who would do that lol....

Morloth · 07/08/2009 18:50

Edam asked where I got the stats from SouthMum so I told her, no neenering just answering a direct question.

I live in Central London, poison is the last problem a cat has here.

SouthMum · 07/08/2009 18:56

Its cruel to keep a cat indoors if it wants to go out.

Anyway betetr dash, next doors kid has just jumped over my wall again to get their ball. Damn parents should keep them indoors. Wheres my gun........

Morloth · 07/08/2009 18:59

It cruel to let a cat out because they die way too young.

You are not seriously trying imply that I would equate a child and cat are you? And I was having so much fun with this, now you are just being silly.

I would compare a cat with the ball, would ask repeatedly for the owner to stop it happening, if it didn't would deal with it directly in any manner I saw fit.

SouthMum · 07/08/2009 19:12

Nah, was just having a bit of a laugh. But seriously that ball is getting on my tits and I have threatened to pop it if it comes in my garden again.

I am pretty saddened though that anyone would consider killing someone else pet just because its getting on their nerves.

Morloth · 07/08/2009 19:29

The dogs next door used to tear ours apart - amazing how quickly we learned to not let the ball go over that fence.

You are saddened and I am amazed that anyone can think that other people should have to deal with their animal's shit.

CurlyCasper · 07/08/2009 19:37

I think it's cruel to keep cats in, but also to keep them at all in built up areas, with no greenery and loads of traffic - that's where they'd die in 4-5 years!

Otherwise, they live well into their teens, and the possibility that they might die outside is a rubbish reason to make them suffer indoors for years. I'd rather they lived a happy, short life than a miserable, indoor one, when a mouse never touches their lips and they don't get to climb trees, roofs and do all the other wonderful things that make cats cats.

I agree with OP that there are too many around these days - our street is littered. We had one doing his business in our borders, but then we also liked to play with him on the lawn. We have since got a dog who is part greyhound and will chase off any moving creature!

OP, try citrus fruit peel/citronella, filling any open soil with shrubs and shoving in loads of 'pokey' sticks that jag their bums! I used the sticks you buy to hold up plants, placed closed together so mog couldn't assume a correct squating position. Keeps them out rather than causing any harm. And DH used to pee in the garden late at night...it does work!

MummyDragon · 07/08/2009 20:10

I like the idea of using citrus peel and DH's wee!! Does he have to spray the entire perimeter of the garden, or will a little go a long way iyswim?

I'm not even sure if the poo in my garden is cat poo or fox poo .... all I know is that it miraculously appears on my lawn every morning and it is definitely not produced by my dog.

Anyone got any ideas to stop foxes pooing on grass?

CurlyCasper · 07/08/2009 20:27

think my DH would just vary his spot, often aiming for areas the cats were obviously using! Sorry, no experience with foxes. Good luck!

lovechoc · 07/08/2009 20:33

YANBU, they are vile creatures. yuk, they sh*t in my garden too. the hissing doesn't work, have tried that...

MummyDragon · 07/08/2009 20:49

DH has just pulled into the driveway ... am going to send him out to the back garden right away, and tell him to get his aim straight!

SycamoretreeIsFullOfResolve · 07/08/2009 20:54

Oh my god. Can I just say ARRRRGHHHHHH

Our neighbours all have cats. Our next door neighbour had a whole load of work done in her garden and suddenly we are COVERED in cat shit.

6 this morning...an vomit too.

I am so digging up DH's lovingly sown lawn that took 2 years to cultivate too!

Can't let DC's out without going around with nappy bags - VOM!!!

If I was prepared to do that I'd have my own pet.

All cat owners should just wake up and respect the horridness that this causes other people, gaaaaaaahhhhhhh I'm so enraged.

Pepper spray has not worked.

Tonight it's citronella gel.

Tomorrow, it will be a fucking Uzi.

CurlyCasper · 07/08/2009 20:55

mummydragon. Must say, mine generally did it under the cover of darkness...
