PussinJimmyChoos Ah!!!!!!!!!!! Its so confusing and so hard. I think in short, rear facing is safest, a 5 point belt is safest and at the end of the day the seat has to fit 100%. Reading www.rearfacing.co.uk and www.childcarseats.org.uk have loads of info which may help.

tryingtobemarypoppins ahhh bless

Isn't 40 pounds the equivalent of 18 kg though or am I missing something?

Is there a 5 point harness that can be used for a child who is probably around 20 kg and over 100 cm tall but just happens to be only turned 3?

Here you go PussinJimmyChoos

Q: What advantages does a 5-point harness have over a seatbelt?

A: Child Passenger Safety experts agree that the 5-point harness is the safest, because it provides the snuggest fit and is suitable for the widest range of children.

5-point harnessed car seats offer a much snugger harness fit than an adult seatbelt. In all 5-point harness seats, the straps come down over the shoulders and across the hips to fasten to the buckle that comes up between the legs. The harness sits snugly against the bony parts of the pelvis (the crotch and hip straps) and across the shoulders and rib cage (the shoulder straps). When a child moves forward in the seat, as they would in a crash, the properly tightened harness is already "holding" the child and it immediately restrains them, spreading the crash force out across the strong bones of the body. The child does not move before loading the restraint.

A 5-point harness has several advantages for child of any age or size. The straps are placed on the child's shoulders and low on the hips, so that crash forces are absorbed by the strongest parts of the child's body instead of the soft abdomen (which could result in internal injuries and even death). It isn't though, amidaiwish. If you're happy to take that risk, good luck to you, but don't act as if a bit of vom is a complete trump card which justified abandoning all proper precautions for your child's safety.

In the UK there are hardly any seats that 5 point harness kids over 18kgs (3st3lbs). Britax used to make one called the Britax Elite but they discontinued it.
In the US, you can get Britax car seats that harness in a 5 point harness until 80lbs (36kgs) but they aren't sold here.
Using something like a Britax Evolva 123 or the other boosters with harnesses shown in some links will only go to 18kgs, then the adult belt then has to be used for weights over 18kgs. The seats have not been tested over 18kgs with the 5 point harness.

I would love to find a seat that harnesses over 18kgs but currently in the UK it isn't possible.

That Britax one looks good - why are they not available in the UK or is that a whole other thread

I am confused now, like peppapig DD1 is now in a highback booster with side head things. It does come apart to be a booster but I have it all together. It did have a 5 point but she weighs nearly 20kg and was too tall for the 5 point so she is using an adult belt. It does 'clip' it over her shoulder so it is secure there and holds it over her lap, so that is ok, no?

what and you NEVER take risks ever with your dcs to stop them screaming? i didn't say it was ok, i said it was what we did and i don't regret it. anyway, my child not yours.

can someone please answer the issue re high back boosters and adult seat belts for children who seem too big for the 5 point harness maxi cosi tobi/priori xp type car seat please. I'm hearing that we should keep them in the 5 point harness as long as poss as adult seat belts aren't ideal etc. etc. but if they have outgrown the 5 point harness one what are we supposed to do?

peppapig the Britax Evolva 123 plus goes up to age 11 and the 5-point safety harness with one pull adjustment is ok up till 18kg. I wonder why the US have them up to 36kgs

Ok lets sum up as its getting so confussing.

The only seat the has the 5 point belt up to 18kg is the Britax Evolva 123 plus. That said there are special needs seats www.incarsafetycentre.co.uk/shop/specialbr02.html and seats in the US which go right up to 36kg.

Is that about right??!!!

This is a US one which harnesses to 80lbs, then turns into a booster to 100lbs. www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3433614

No idea why they don't make them for the UK. I know they need LATCH and some need tethering in but even still. US seats are not recommended for use in the UK (possibly even illegal) as the UK has far higher testing regulations...yet obviously lower standards of safety!

amidaiwish... if your DC has exceeded the height/weight of a group 1 5 point harness, then you ahve no choice but to use a High Back Booster with adult lap belt

The problem is so many parents skip this phase and go straight to a booster cushion with adult lap belt (as the OP)

I'm going to weigh DS again tomorrow and if he's still under 18kgs (most likely he is) then I'm going to try him back in our Britax first class Si and see how he is with the fit..if its ok, then he can use that for the time being..I'll feel so much happier knowing he's in the 5 point harness. What do you think? Its summer now so at least he's not bulked up by a winter coat etc

TryingtobeMaryPoppin- all forward facing car seats in the UK harness to 18kgs, not just the Evolva 123. After that they haven't been tested for higher weights.

The Britax first class Si will carry kids forward facing up to 18kgs..whether they will fit comfy is another matter, hence why I'm trying DS again tomorrow

pressed send too quickly- I mean 5 point harness to 18kgs. Some seats then turn into booster seats, others have then done their job and a booster seat or highback booster is then needed. Seats like the MaxiCosi Tobi/Britax Eclipse etc go to 18kgs. For taller kids under 18kgs, something like the Evolva123 is good as it grows with the child.

MATYPOPPINS.. ALL 5 point harnesses go up to 18kg

its just that the group 123 (high back boosters) can be used from 15kg with adult seat belt so therefore causes confusion

I'm thinkin that maybe for these type of seats there should be a slight change in that they manufacturers should advise adult belt to be used FROM 18kg

but DD2 is nearly 4, too tall for the group 1 maxi cosi priori xp but is light.
i'll weigh her tomorrow
if she is under 18kgs what do i do? leave her in the group 1 car seat though doing up the harness is a struggle and her head is half way over the top of the back?
