Right, so I could get a high back booster seat with a 5 point harness and just see how long I can get away with using for? I should imagine it would be ok for quite a while really...

Blardy hell though..DH will take some convincing....it was only 6 mths ago or so and it was over £130!!!!

I may just buy it myself and be done with it - I can't do with the convincing him!

Self correction:

If you look at the link I posted earlier from the department of transport you will see that even a 4 year old shouldn't be in on a booster seat cushion without a back. They are for children of 6 and over who weigh over 22 kilos, not 18.

Yes we will. Insurance have said i'll need to send receipt or instructions and they'll reimburse current cost for a new one. In-laws have the exact same seat so can borrow theirs in the meantime.

If your car is not a write off in a crash, would the insurance replace the normal seatbelts in the car? Just wondered as surely they wouldn't be as effective? Our crash didn't make the airbags go on though, obviously they would need replacing.

DS just over 3yrs. He's over 3ft and weighs about 2st 8lb...more height than weight iyswim..do you think the harness ones will be ok for him?

I am confused - I clicked on the link and then clicked on a seat and it says

"Unique Adjust-Fit system allows easy headrest and harness adjustment to accomodate your child from 9kg to 18kg

For children 15kg to 36kg the harness is stowed and the belt guides position the adult belt comfortably and safely over your child "

Does that not mean that at 15kg they come out of the harness?

I looked at those seats when we were choosing and saw that information at the time.

Ok so I wont trust my very sensible health visitor but surely I can trust the manufacturer and road safety people? I must have emailed half of the country.

Believe me I am in no rush but dont understand the alternative?

Good question BexieID, you would have thought so wouldn't you. They must have to test them?

What's 2 stone 8 in kilos? Normally I work in imperial but for this I go by the official things which are all in metric.

I think if your child is too big for a child seat with 5 point harness they need to be in a booster seat (rather than a backless booster cushion) using the adult seat bel.

Sorry for delay i had to go out to the car and check! It's a Recaro, think the version we have is a young sport?, but not sure.
It has the harness straps and can be used without when they are older.
The head protector area moves up and down, so you can make sure it's exactly at the right height.
Recaro also make safety equipment for racing cars, which impressed DH!
It's also the best fitting seat we've ever had for our car.

I think we're talking at cross purposes, peppa. You have your child in a booster/child seat, which has a back and sides and just uses the adult belt? I think you are right, that is fine for a child over 15kg. Although from the desciption you typed out, they could continue to use the 5 point until 18kg, assuming they weren't too tall - which they may well be.

My brother has his 3 year old on a booster cushion (I apologise if I was unclear before) - no back, no sides. That doesn't comply with the guidance. That's why I'm worried.

tryingtobemarypoppins the point with those seats though is that they are fine if your child is tall but below the weight limit for 5 point harness but at just under 3 my dd was not only too tall but above the weight limit for a 5 point harness, those seats may grow with your child but if you actually read the instructions you will see they also say to remove the harness at the same weight yous should remove them from the normal car seat.

And also it would have been difficult to buy one of those seats for me as it was 3 years ago and there were nowhere near as many of them around as there is now and the ones freely available came off extremely poorly in Which tests. So please donot patronise pople who have done the best research they can and acted and used what was available at the time.

peppapighastakenovermylife

Look for high, top harness slots to accommodate taller children up to 40 pounds.

yes def Recaro young sport from age 3-12 (as bits come off so it can be a booster seat with back (and without too I think)).
So even thought it's expensive it will last.
There are some on Kiddicare, with reviews to, so you can check out what other people think.
I'd def recommend it.

Georigmama oh I see! No I would never put him on just a booster cushion until he is much much older (possibly around 35 ).

He is in a maxi cosi rhodi XR high backed booster with guide for adult seatbelt. He was 18 kg at 2.5 years so went into it then. He is a giant but his dad was over 6 ft at 12 so I am going to be straining my neck a lot in the future lol.

I would prefer him to be in a harness but dont think there is one for a child who must now be 20 kg +. I think I remember reading that the harness becomes more dangerous after a certain weight for some reason.

As an aside does anyone know anything about the britax first class si 0+ rear facing seat? I bought three (my car, DH, grandparents car) as they seemed the safest option - also a giant child who didnt fit in infant carrier. However it says on there that they can only be rear facing until 13 kg. Now she was 11kg 2 months ago so I am guessing it wont be long until she is over that weight - do I have to turn her around and why? She is only 11 months old (again giant child genes .

We used a cafrrycot style for DD1 - checked with which first and it was recommended. Was tricky to install initially then like most of them once you got the knack of it was quick and easy.

The one comment I'd make about that clip is that it wasn;t fitted correctly at all, there was so much slack on those seatbelts. Now I know a lot of car seats aren;t fitted correctly but surely thats got to make a huge difference.

If you know anyone who has one, I'd let them know if only so that they can ensure that they know how to fit the seat correctly.

peppapighastakenovermylife I remember phoning britax and asking the same question! Its because its only tested rear racing up to 13kg, they didn't test it after this weight. HTH

i know what you mean peppapighastakenovermylife, my ds2 is in the same seat and he is nearly at the 13kg stage and he's only 8 months and he can't strech his legs out anymore as they are touching the seat.
I don't know what to do about turning him either.

Thanks Tryingtobemarypoppins - I wonder why they didnt test further. She is so happy rear facing as she can see her brother who is forward facing if that makes sense. And as someone pointed out she has never known any difference.

This thread probably wins the award for the most sub conversations going on!

DS is just over the 15kgs but he was in a Britax first class forward facing and he just seemed to be filling it too much and not comfortable, added to which it was an increasing struggle to lift him up into it

I really thought that getting a high backed booster with guide for the adult belt was a safe option

Think will take him to Mothercare tomorrow and try one of the 5 point harness ones, that way I can see whether he'd be comfortable or not

My point is, are the high back boosters with adult lap belt feeders/guides safe in an accident??
