To send back the mobile phone DS dropped saying it arrived with the screen cracked?

I know IABU, but I can't bear it. It cost £60 and I agonised before deciding to let him have it and only then because he has diabetes and therefore needs a phone more than most.

He didn't break it btw. His brother did.

I wouldn't do it. I believe that what goes around comes around and if you do this kind of thing you're likely to have other people do the dirty to you, too.

Morloth · 23/07/2009 20:21

You can get a basic nokia on Amazon for 18 quid.

It sucks, but I wouldn't be able to send it back, the guilt would kill me. Does the phone still work? A cracked screen doesn't always mean disaster.

Thunderduck · 23/07/2009 20:22

YABU.

ninah · 23/07/2009 20:24

yabu

expatinscotland · 23/07/2009 20:25

'sorry if I sound really really awful, but I understand whats its like to be pennyless and £60 to a phone company is a drop in the ocean)'

So that makes it okay to steal from them?

I'm sorry, but that's friggin' rogue.

If you have £60 to spend on a mobile phone then you're obviously far from penniless.

No wonder we all get treated like criminals nowadays in some many ways, with all those who think it's okay to thieve when you jack things up instead of taking some personal responsibility for it!

IwishIwasmoreorganised · 23/07/2009 20:29

It's wrong, I know that but I think I would do it

wonderingwondering · 23/07/2009 20:31

That is dishonest. I wouldn't.

But I would phone the company and ask why the screen isn't robust enough to deal with everyday use. If you didn't hear anything when you were in the room, nothing that drastic has happened to it.

I suspect they'll fix the screen for you.

HolyGuacamole · 23/07/2009 20:36

YABU, why not get a quote on getting the screen replaced, it probably won't cost that much. Also, what wondering said.

Try here for a quote, this was just the first one on Google, there are loads of other sites.

Very kind dilemma but he's on Orange because we all are.

I think I'll call and tell the truth. I'll say I'm not happy it broke though because it really shouldn't have cracked. Perhaps they'll fix it and I won't have the guilt to deal with.

Thanks expat. Measured and sympathetic as ever . Your protection of the faceless 'phone companies is touching but you can relax. I won't lie.

YABU - think of the example you would be setting.

Spidermama · 23/07/2009 20:41

True Dolly.

I'm calling them up now and will tell the truth. If they send a new one, great! If not, so be it.

expatinscotland · 23/07/2009 20:45

anytime, Spider.

wasn't it you who started this thread in AIBU with 'I know IABU' as an opening gambit?

even phone companies are not exempt from personal responsibility, so they'll hopefully and most likely replace the phone when you tell them the truth.

fishie · 23/07/2009 20:52

spidermama i don't think it should have broken. what sort is it? i can't believe you'd have ordered a flimsy one for a child anyway, he would surely have broken it himself if that crappy.

posting in aibu topic will always guarantee you a bad reaction. try 'what would you do' instead.

roneef · 23/07/2009 20:53

Exactly expat - I got the impression spider was just venting. She knew it was wrong from the beginning.

Your response was way ott. Don't blame her for being gutted. It was virtually brand new.

expatinscotland · 23/07/2009 20:55

you're entitled to your opinion, ron.

but doing that wouldn't have even crossed a lot of peoples' minds.

so don't put it in AIBU then or word it 'VENTING, need help and support'.

roneef · 23/07/2009 20:58

Generalising again Expat. Many people on this thread said thay would do it.

Just because she put it in AIBU doesn't give you the right to question if she really is skint. £60 on a phone isn't that much.

expatinscotland · 23/07/2009 20:59

Generalising, IYO.

Again, you're entitled to your opinion and I am to mine.

AnnieLobeseder · 23/07/2009 21:00

YABU. It's fraud, however you spin it.

barnsleybelle · 23/07/2009 21:01

I posted early on in the thread that i would send it back. I've read all the responses and would still send it back. Flog me, say what you will.

expatinscotland · 23/07/2009 21:01

'Just because she put it in AIBU doesn't give you the right to question if she really is skint.'

Who said anything about 'rights'?

It sort of goes to follow that when someone is really skint, they don't have 60 quid to spend on a phone.

But again, you're entitled to your opinion.

Carry on 'venting' away, however. It's an open board.

morningpaper · 23/07/2009 21:02

I was going to shriek YABU but it sounds like it's basically fallen off a chair and broken, in which case I would ring up and moan about that and say it was too fragile - it might have had a crack in already. I'm constantly dropping mine and it's absolutely fine.

roneef · 23/07/2009 21:04

Fair enough, expat. We are both entitled to our opinions. I sort of guessed that, already.

It is a FACT that many people on this thread would contemplate it though.

Just to be clear, like

msled · 23/07/2009 21:11

I had a phone with a cracked screen for about two years - my son stood on it! It worked perfectly well. if it works then just use it.

fishie · 23/07/2009 21:12

roneef are you a namechanger? just whenever i see you it is aggro. have you a happy jolly side that i've missed somewhere?
