Everyone I have told has looked really worried.

Had someone else do my hair but the best tip my best friend gave me was do your own make-up so your husband-to-be recognises you when you walk up the aisle. As someone has already suggested go along to make-up counters and ask for some demonstrations. You don't have to buy their make-up.
YANBU.

daisydora · 20/07/2009 18:36

YANBU

I had my hair done (but it was by a mate) and I did my own make-up.

I'll never forget a friend of mine who had a make-up practice before her big day - she looked like Aunt Sally!!!!

Tee2072 · 20/07/2009 18:42

I did my own hair and makeup.

Disenchanted3 · 20/07/2009 18:48

I did my own make up and loved it, I had my hair done by someone else and hated it!

hopingalways · 20/07/2009 19:03

YANBU - my mum did mine (and she's not a hairdresser/ make up artist). My SIL all went to the salon to be bridesmaids...they missed all the fun of the morning, they whimpered from the pain of hair pins and helmet hair spray all day and frankly their hair dos were not good.

If it works for you, it's your wedding and you are entitled to do whatever you like with your hair and make up! good for you for not being brainwashed by the wedding magazines.

BernardsCat · 20/07/2009 19:08

i had my hiar dried

did me own slap
You do need to shave though

BikeRunSki · 20/07/2009 19:11

I did my own hair. Got my make up done and hated it. Wished I had done it myself.

If you want to do it yourself, go for it, and save yourself a fortune.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 20/07/2009 19:15

Disenchanted lovely pic

AuntieMaggie · 20/07/2009 20:42

That's so lovely disenchanted - even the hair you didn't lik!

fizzpops · 20/07/2009 20:56

I did my makeup and my Mum helped with my hair - we had loads of practices first as I have really thick hair and wanted to make sure it would 'stay' reasonably well.

I also got lots of worried looks but I didn't want one of those rock solid hairdos with all the curls or to have spiders clinging to my eyelashes so it turned out great and looked natural which I was after.

Mind you we also didn't have cars, cake, photographer, bridesmaids, first dance, flowers etc etc - just as we wanted it.

Sounds like there was nothing at all but the venue was amazing and didn't suit a traditional set up.

frAKKINPannikin · 20/07/2009 21:07

I plan to do my own make-up. As long as you're not totally cack-handed then YANBU.

Not that you'd be being unreasonable if you were, more unwise...

disenchanted3 you look gorgeous.

LittleMammaTo2 · 20/07/2009 21:09

I did my own hair and make up when I got married as did my sister in law when she got married and we all looked ok as far as I can tell - well, our future husbands didn't run at the sight of us anyway

JoesMummy09 · 20/07/2009 21:09

beanieb that was exactly the approach to hair that I took.

I also did my own make up... but I did go along to Bobby Brown counter and get some help with chosing make-up a few days before the wedding.

I also had my hair cut and coloured at v swanky salon a few days before the wedding and had a manicure and pedicure the day before the ceremoney... again at ridiculously expensive salon.

Wedding was lovely. Although the rose I had pinned in my hair at the back fell out when the photographer was taking pictures just after the ceremony... but it made great pictures as we laughed and the groom tried to help me shove it back in... aw t'was a great day.

Enjoy yours

beanieb · 20/07/2009 22:07

Disenchanted, you look amazing even if you didn;t like the hair!

I am going to get my haircut on Wednesday morning before my wedding but doing my own face and things.
Did you decide on shoes beanieb? WHen is your wedding?

vickram · 20/07/2009 23:24

YANBU! I did my own hair and make-up too and it worked! You'll be fine! Plus I've known people who've been really disappointed with their "professional" make-up and hair done by hairdressers and artists, especially if they've gone overboard.

Bobby Brown's were really helpful. I was aiming for the "English Rose" look and they had some really nice colours and the products were longlasting.

Practice beforehand and take some photos to to see how it looks in pictures. Make sure you've got some make-up with you for touch ups during the big day.

EmotionalRex · 20/07/2009 23:40

I spent thirty-two quid on my wedding - so no, no hairdresser etc. We're still married nearly 2 decades later and chasing each other around the house like eejits. with 2 lovely kids. The hairstyle's not the important bit. It shouldn't bother you - but at the same time, if you want to treat yourself to a bit of pampering why not? As long as they don't make you look like a drag queen like my last makeover lol

Penthesileia · 20/07/2009 23:47

YANBU! At all! I wore no make up at all for my wedding, although I did have my hair washed and blown dry into very very loose long curls (Toni & Guy's "twisty-flicky" ).

I never wear make up, so it seemed weird to start on my wedding day. I truly do not understand why people want to slap on loads of war paint and look like a stranger to themselves in their wedding photos.

If you are used to doing your own make up and hair, go for it. You will look beautiful!

galletti · 21/07/2009 00:05

YANBU - after all, you are the best one to know how to do it - it's your face! I have to admit, I did go and have a free session at a make up desk in a department store a before the day, and bought some new make-up, but did it all myself on the day, and had my hair done, cos needed it put up for the veil. I think if I was going to have anything done I would go for a wash and blow dry because it makes you feel good, but if you are happy doing it yourself, go for it. And Congratulations, you will look great whatever you decide. Have a Lovely Day.

2rebecca · 21/07/2009 08:09

I did mine and didn't regret it. I always hate my face if anyone else puts make up on it as I'm a light touch make up person. I'm also not into elaborate hair "dos" and just got it cut and coloured the week before. Meant I had much more time on the day itself. Did my own nails too.

foofi · 21/07/2009 08:11

I did have my hair done as it was really long at the time, but I did my own makeup.

Enjoy your day.

KIMItheThreadSlayer · 21/07/2009 08:22

I did my own make up but had my hair done.
You know how you like to look so why not do it yourself.

ConstantlyCooking · 21/07/2009 08:27

I did my own and a a great time in the few weeks before booking makeovers at stands in department stores to pick up ideas - they are really helpful if you say you are getting married.

VeryAngryGusset · 21/07/2009 18:18

I did my own make-up cos I couldn't stand the fussing of someone I didn't know. I did (as JamieJay suggested) go to the Bobbi Brown counter and got them to put make-up on me and watched carefully - told them what I was doing and they were lovely and kind and patient. I still (3 years later) use pretty much what they told me. And I think I look quite nice. Photos look fine. You tend to have to wear slightly heavier base than usual for the pics to come out right but they can tell you all that.

I did have my hair done - just blow dried and a clip put in - but I've known my hairdresser for 15 years so it was nice and not embarrassing/faffy.

poppy34 · 21/07/2009 18:29

Nope did my own on basis at age 30 something I know what suits me and didn't want to look like a show girl ( got married in Vegas so had horror visions of what local untested types would do).
