bumpsoon - ahhhh... so get a picture in your head of those poor old things with thrombosis in their legs having to have an amputation - that should do it!

fortyplus · 20/07/2009 10:07

Hang on a min - only just noticed that you're pg!

DOUBLE bollocking from me!

HuffwardlyRouge · 20/07/2009 10:12

Giving up smoking isn't even hard. That is a myth put about by tobacco companies who have a vested interest in making you believe that you can't give up. Of course you can. After the 1st 24 hours you don't even have any nicotene left in your body. Just don't have another cigarette. It's not rocket science ffs.

elliepac · 20/07/2009 10:12

bumpsoon, think i will try from tomorrow. Hope you're now feeling suitably admonished

bumpsoon · 20/07/2009 10:12

Am under a smoking cessation advisor at the mo ,shes really nice ,what i need is a more hattie jaques character . The youngest person ive looked after with smoking related lung cancer was 43 ,i say smoking related ,because obviousley there are lung cancers that have nothing to do with smoking .

I'm already halfway under the desk avoiding missiles but....I'm not a fan of cessation groups. Like diet groups, your head can very easily be filled with the very thing it shouldn't be!

Get some plasticine and every time a rolly moment looks like it's coming on, make something really rude out of the plasticine instead.

fortyplus · 20/07/2009 10:15

When my dad gave up smoking he bought himself a pipe. He didn't smoke it - just stuck it in his mouth and sucked it. Why don't you try that? Every time you fancy a fag just stick the pipe in your mouth and suck it. You will feel such a tw*t you'll soon give up!

duchesse · 20/07/2009 10:16

Geez, woman, do you know about the premature birth stats for smokers? And the fact that your baby is currently physiologically dependent on nicotine, thus potentially landing him or her with a lifelong addiction problem. Plus if you continue smoking around him or her after the birth, you are setting the poor mite up for lung problems and increased risk of SID. And if you intend to smoke outside when it's born, why not start now by making sure that it is not bathing in a bath of smoke and nicotine? Pull yourself together and dump the filthy sticks straight in the bin (or better still, burn em in a ceremonial pyre) and do not buy any more.

Ewe · 20/07/2009 10:17

I can't believe you aren't too ashamed to post this to be honest. You have a choice in smoking, your unborn child doesn't, it actually makes me sick.

Maybe every time you go to light a cigarette imagine it in your baby's mouth?

duchesse · 20/07/2009 10:19

Also, nobody ever "stops tomorrow". If you mean it, stop now. Do not smoke that next filthy thing.

MorningTownRide · 20/07/2009 10:20

I find it odd you find this all a bit of a jolly jape.

You stink and you're damaging your baby.

fortyplus · 20/07/2009 10:21

My brother's wife was a smoker and he flatly refused ttc until she gave up, so she did. You just need an incentive - unborn baby's health should be a good one...

No i dont think its a jolly jape at all however this is really helpful for me and that tiny bit of my subconcious that clings to the belief that i get anything at all from cigarettes. I am ashamed of smoking and you all being disgusted with me is what i need

i wish i had made a video of the last months of my grandfathers life you know.
he died of smoking induced cancer.

by the time he eventually died he had one whole lung removed and half of the other one.he had also had half of his stomach removed.
he couldn't get up the stairs so had to have a bed in the living room. he was too weak to do much at all really. he was skin and bones with so many wrinkles and horrible yellow skin. he spent a lot of time hawking and coughing phlegm and blood into a bucket. he was in pain a lot.

but he still liked to have a fag because you know-will power isn't easy is it??

You would think wouldnt you that after watching 100s of people die painful and protracted deaths i would have given up ,but no im afraid it usually had the reverse effect ,id be straight outside on my break for a fag . Pathetic really doesnt come close does it .

MorningTownRide · 20/07/2009 10:36

Oh and stop with the poor me and the sad emoticons.

I loved smoking and I quit. It's not that hard.

bumpsoon · 20/07/2009 10:43

This is really helping , i have to go out now ,but i really appreciate you all taking the time to tell me some home truths .

bumpsoon · 20/07/2009 10:44

How did you do it by the way morning. the smoking cessation women

OP posts:
bumpsoon · 20/07/2009 10:46

oops sorry cat walked across keyboard didnt get chance to finish. The smoking cessation women gave me patches ,but tbh i would rather do it without ,because as people have pointed out nicotine leaves your system really quickly once you stop putting it in

My aunt struggled to give up smoking, even though she miscarried one of her twin daughters at 6mths pregnant, and the other was born very prematurely and expected to have significant health problems (she didn't fortunately). That baby grew up to be a beautiful young woman who begged her mother time and time again to give up smoking. She never could until the day she was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer - she never smoked again. Despite living much longer than expected she died 18 months later, at the age of 59. She will never see her daughter get married or have children, and she bitterly regretted not having the strength to give up earlier..

If you can't do it for you - do it for your unborn child..

Wonderstuff · 20/07/2009 10:48

A friend just had a stroke, at 49, she doesnt plan to give up. I dont get it, I think most smokers believe it won't happen to them, but lung cancer is so awful, so slow, so painful.

DH won't give up, makes me so sad, I want to grow old with him, but i worry it wont happen. 45-55 is prime time for smoking related heart problems, he may not get to see dd as an adult.

db's gf smoked through first pg, dn needed steriods her asthma was so bad, i couldnt believe she smoked through 2nd pg

I know its hard but try to at least cut out as many as possible. could you try to not give yoursef access to them?

MorningTownRide · 20/07/2009 11:06

I went cold turkey.

I spent the first day in bed.

Then I went on a juvenile website called Cissy Fit, where the aim is to gang up on people in a playground. The talk bit was very bitchy. It was very cathartic.

GoldenSnitch · 20/07/2009 11:22

You are pregnant and smoking!!! OMFG!!!

And a nurse too

Do you not love your baby?

You are increasing your babies risk of all sorts of health issues not to mention SIDS!! How will you feel if your baby dies - you will never know if it was all your fault cause you wouldn't stop this stupid habit!

And before you start with the "you don't know how hard it is" - I do. I smoked before I had DS and quit, cold turkey, when we started TTC!

Now stop being so weak and stop smoking
