to not give DS fishfingers?

MiniMarmite · 18/07/2009 18:42

My (lovely) friend keeps asking me if I have given DS (10 months) fishfingers yet.

I don't really plan to give them to him TBH as we don't eat them ourselves (don't really like the texture of frozen fish so I don't buy frozen fish in any form and try to avoid cod as far as possible for sustainability reasons).

She thinks that even if we don't eat them he should be familiar with them in case he goes to someone's house for tea and is given them to eat. So far I've said that he eats well and doubt he would refuse to eat one if given to him. She also says that they are a good standby to have in the freezer. True.

I don't object to fishfingers and as such wouldn't object if he were given one at someone's house etc.

I guess I'm just wondering of I am being a snob! We cook most of our food from scratch but then I give him shop bought falafel from time to time to save time on busy days so maybe I've got a double standard here.

Also, I was given ff's a lot as a child and remember hating that.

Not one of life's big questions I know but I expect that my friend thinks I am being a bit weird about this!

Asda do Tiger bread. Never tried it, thought it was just an ordinary bloomer with a weird pattern which cost a bit more than the ordinary . 'pparently I may be wrong .

midlandsmumof4 · 23/07/2009 01:14

BTW-I think fish fingers can be as fish friendly as you want them to be these days,if you see what I mean. Oh and to the OP 'shop bought falafel'-shame on you .

Thunderduck · 23/07/2009 01:15

Tiger bread is delicious. It contains sesame oil.

midlandsmumof4 · 23/07/2009 01:24

Thanks Thunder. That may explain why it's so often on the 'Whoopsy' range . Will try a fresh one next week.

Thunderduck · 23/07/2009 01:31

You can get tiger rolls too, known as tiger paws, they're nice, but the loaves are even nicer I think.
I'm drooling now just thinking of them.

Great OP, Minimarmite.

I can confirm children need no training for fish fingers. I refused to have such shocking things in the house when my DS1 was little. And then I starting struggling during my second pregnancy (it turned out to be cancer but for over a year I thought I was just being wet).

My friends all turned to me and chanted fishfingers, beans, toast, pasta'n'pesto (from a jar). I was shocked they thought nothing of feeding their children like this. As things got too much, the filth food started infiltrating my organic lentil home. It was welcomed with a smiling face and empty plate. He was about two and took to it like a dream.

I'm sure your DC will adapt well when needs must.

Tiger bread is fantastic stuff!! ...thick sliced mature cheddar, crispy salad, sliced advocado(optional)touch of olive-oil dressing, crushed black pepper...inside fresh Tiger Bread yum

Stigaloid · 23/07/2009 11:21

I make my fish fingers from scratch. Doesn't take anytime at all. Use sustainable fish like Pollack (waitrose remove skin for you) whizz up a couple of pieces of bread in food processor, dip fish in beaten egg for a couple of minutes, roll in breadcrumbs and cook for 12 mins in oven. Cooked from scracth and great finger food. Also a great way of introducing fish to young children.

Stig, I might try that . If anything this thread has made me want fishfingers a bit!

DS has my (very lazy) so-called fish fingers: cook fish, cut into strips, give to ds, watch him eat it! Hardly the real mcCoy!

We might need to rename this "AIBU to like/disklike/feed my kids/the cat Fishfingers and Tiger Bread Thread"

Thanks ThingOne

I think you're right about needs must and all that. At the moment I am at home full time with only one child so it's not too difficult to cook most of the time. I KNOW that won't be the case forever.

From a Tana Ramsay adapted recipe - you can use Pollack (whichis what we use) instead of Cod

Ingredients
For the goujons

?300g breadcrumbs
?2 tbsp finely grated Parmesan
?1 tsp Paprika
?1 Egg
?800 g skinless cod fillets, sliced into 1cm thick goujons
For the tartar sauce

?200g mayonnaise
?4 pickled gherkins, diced
?2 Spring onions, diced
Method

  1. For the goujons: mix the breadcrumbs and parmesan cheese together with the paprika in a bowl.
  1. Beat the egg in a separate bowl and dip the fish in, coating evenly with the egg. Transfer the fish to the bowl of breadcrumbs and roll around in the mixture, making sure the fish is evenly coated. Repeat with all the goujons.
  1. Heat a frying pan with the olive oil and add the goujons. Fry on one side for 2-3 minutes, or until golden, then flip over and fry for a further 2 minutes, until also golden and the fish is cooked through.
  1. For the tartar sauce: mix together the mayonnaise, gherkins and spring onions in a small bowl until well combined. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
  1. To serve, pile the goujons on a plate with the tartar sauce on the side. Garnish with a wedge of lemon.

Sounds great, thanks Stig . I have to ask (now that Nappyaddict has me in frozen fish training) - do they freeze well (and if so, uncooked)?

Well after reading Sophables information on farmed salmon, I refuse to but it. So instead I buy frozen wild salmon fillets and Birdseye's salmon fish fingers (wild salmon).

So I feed DD frozen fish and even ff and pat myself on the back for being a good mum feeding my dd healthy fish and also from a more sustainable source.

KingRolo · 23/07/2009 13:08

Is this thread still going? Every time I see it I want to fishfinger sandwich. Go away!

KingRolo · 23/07/2009 13:09

um, that should be a, not to.

Botbot · 23/07/2009 13:11

I have the fussiest dd in the world and fish fingers are more or less her only source of protein at the moment.

[remembers happy days when she was 10 months old and would eat any vegetable puree/non-processed food I gave her. I could afford to be poncy then. Huge, heavy sigh]

MiniMarmite · 23/07/2009 13:11

PuppyLoves, yes, that was a really helpful thread for me too (without this becoming a thread about a thread of course)!

OP posts:
MiniMarmite · 23/07/2009 13:12

KingRolo, yes, I was keen for this thread to go away too as I was getting more and more embarrased about the falafel! But, hey, it just keeps coming back to haunt me!

OP posts:
Stigaloid · 23/07/2009 13:13

MiniM - i think they should freeze okay provide the fish is fresh and not previously frozen (check with fishmonger) although that having ben said, they tend to go down a treat and you don't get many left over. I tend to buy a piece of fish just big enough for dinner. I also put mine in the oven at aroun 200C for 10-15 minutes

Enjoy

KingRolo · 23/07/2009 13:14

It's not making me want any falafel, sadly.

MiniMarmite · 23/07/2009 13:18

Really? I love falafel...anyway, must get back to my lentil weaving

Thanks again Stig

GrendelsMum · 23/07/2009 13:28

I agreee. This makes me want to eat fishfingers, not falafel.

stleger · 23/07/2009 13:35

I'd like felafel but find it hard to say and spell. And a bhaji.

ThingOne · 23/07/2009 13:37

Felafel trump fish fingers every time in my book. Yum, slurp, oops, they've all gone.
