to not give DS fishfingers?

MiniMarmite · 18/07/2009 18:42

My (lovely) friend keeps asking me if I have given DS (10 months) fishfingers yet.

I don't really plan to give them to him TBH as we don't eat them ourselves (don't really like the texture of frozen fish so I don't buy frozen fish in any form and try to avoid cod as far as possible for sustainability reasons).

She thinks that even if we don't eat them he should be familiar with them in case he goes to someone's house for tea and is given them to eat. So far I've said that he eats well and doubt he would refuse to eat one if given to him. She also says that they are a good standby to have in the freezer. True.

I don't object to fishfingers and as such wouldn't object if he were given one at someone's house etc.

I guess I'm just wondering of I am being a snob! We cook most of our food from scratch but then I give him shop bought falafel from time to time to save time on busy days so maybe I've got a double standard here.

Also, I was given ff's a lot as a child and remember hating that.

Not one of life's big questions I know but I expect that my friend thinks I am being a bit weird about this!

BTW, YANBU

I haven't given DS fish fingers yet he is 2 and he hasn't suffered any ill effects.

We don't eat them either so have never bought them. May try the salmon ones mentioned earlier though.

puffling · 19/07/2009 00:12

I love fish fingers because they have a nice crunchy coating on them which means dd will eat her fish. The M & S ones are particularly good as they've got stacks of fish in them.

moondog · 19/07/2009 00:24

I would sooner fist Janet Jackson than eat a fishfinger. Minging.

Why do the British have to coat everything in breadcrumbs and batter. If I eat fish,I'll have it whole with fins and eyes, thanks.

MadEyeballsMoody · 19/07/2009 07:58

Lol moondog, not sure which is the worst mental image there

pointydog · 19/07/2009 10:55

fins and eyes, mmmmm

Biurds eyefinfingers. You buys em

MiniMarmite · 19/07/2009 18:36

When we were kids my cousin once claimed that she had a fishfinger bled when she cut into it.

Maybe this is what puts me off!

We have the big waitrose haddock fishfingers in batter as they are nicer than the breadcrumb ones.

I cannot believe you are that insecure about what you feed your child and that obsessed that you need take the time to post about bloody fishfingers!

Noonki · 19/07/2009 18:42

well thanks moondog that image has put me off my tea, well and proper

MiniMarmite · 20/07/2009 19:29

gemmummy · 22/07/2009 14:47

Doodle2u · 22/07/2009 14:52

"...but then I give him shop bought falafel from time to time to save time on busy days so maybe I've got a double standard here."

I don't know why but that just made me larf!

MiniMarmite · 22/07/2009 18:51

I braved frozen fish today and was just logging onto MN to let you know . Yes, it was fine (better not tell my Mum though eh)!

nappyaddict · 22/07/2009 18:57

See so this thread wasn't completely pointless what did you have?

GrendelsMum · 22/07/2009 19:42

According to Women's Hour, fish fingers are made out of pollock nowadays, which is MSC approved.

:-)

Fishfingers absolutely must be grilled, though, to make the outside crunchy. Horrid if fried.

MiniMarmite · 22/07/2009 20:47

I always thought it was an extremely worthwhile thread lol

I had salmon that I had frozen from a fresh piece that I bought.

nappyaddict · 22/07/2009 21:24

So your next challenge is to buy already frozen fillets of fish from the supermarket

MiniMarmite · 22/07/2009 22:22

ok might need to work my way up to this! Watch this space (on this ever so worthwhile thread for fingerfobes)!

MadEyeballsMoody - I had mine on tiger bread with a splodge of ketchup

Tiger bread? where do i buy this interesting sounding thing and what the feck is it? is it stripy bread?

MiniMarmite · 22/07/2009 22:37

It is stripey, I think you get it in Sainsbury's

OP posts:
nappyaddict · 22/07/2009 22:59

I luuuuuuuurve tiger bread. What do they put in it to make it taste so nice?

ronshar · 22/07/2009 23:08

Tesco Tiger bread is much nicer than Sainsbury.
But surely the best FF sandwich has mushrooms in it, with mustard & ketchup?

nappyaddict · 23/07/2009 00:10

yuck to mushrooms and mustard.

i like mine with rocket in lemon juice, cucumber, tomato, red onion, red peppers and garlic mayo.
