to be pissed off with mum at school ? Rent alert : It's regarding Swine Flu...

Ok her dd started to be unwell on sunday, it was confirmed being Swine flu..He apparently got over it quickly, and was back at school today ??? Why ???????? The school gave us a letter saying to keep our children at least 7 days or not coming back at all in the case of symptoms ??? It's so inconsiderate for the other children..I know my ds will catch it at one point but would like to avoid it..I can't help myself,I'm paniking..and this cow sent her dd at school because he looked well enough, she has another dd and dh being sick at home with swine flu for god sake.......................

Yes the point someone made about school holidays was a bit random. You will surely drive yourself insane if you keep your kids inside for 6 weeks??

Riven are you changing your argument here.You said the child became sick on SUNDAY and stayed off til he/she was symptom free ?

girlsyearapart - did your doctor suggest that if you can recover without tamiflu then it's not swine flu? i.e. in order to recover from swine flu you NEED tamiflu ? does he have shares in tamiflu or something? I think plenty of people have recovered without any special treatment and, as others have said, there are plenty of mild cases out there. I really do hate all the media hype. If they gave us the annual flu figures every year and tracked its spread around the country it would all sound v scary but the majority of us don't even think about catching flu let alone get so worried about it that we start thinking about quarantining our kids.

Lots of people have recovered fine from SF without having to use Tamiflu. I would be very suspicious f a doctor that sugegsted otherwise!

Yes he said as it is getting better on its own then not swine flu. To be honest I was a bit about that one. I think it probably was tbh as she has had viruses and bad tummy before but has never had a temperature with it v unusual for her. Also VERY unusual for her to be off food (even chocolate buttons got refused!) Not bothered whether it was or wasn't but much more concerned about dd2 catching it and whether I should try to find tamiflu for her.

re: Tamiflu, that's utter nonsense on your GP's part. I think it's the case that it reduces the duration of flu by about a day? Hang on...

it's because of people like you that I haven't told anyone that I have swine flu and don't intend to.

Swine flu is a virus like any other flu. It's not the black death ffs. But for some reason it seems to have a stigma attached to it. So while I have isolated myself, I don't intend to tell anyone that I had swine flu.

Thank God my son's school is not full of hysterics like you. We had a letter re 2 children having swine flu - haven't heard a peep about it at the school gates. Have however had alot of lovely chats about summer holidays, genuine commiserations over DS's recent accident, comments about the weather blah blah blah. Honestly can't imagine anyone calling each other a cow. Funnily enough DS's school is largely packed full of children who respect each other and where bullying is virtually unheard of. How can children have an idea how to be respectful when parents allow themselves to stoop to such levels.

My nephew was diagnosed on tuesday, they were told to stay in for 5-7 days, i think what they mean by that is, that will probably be the time it takes for the illness to pass.

Are they not all finished school now anyway?

I am a bit about all the hysteria.

There are loads of odd bugs going around at the moment.

DP has got swine flu, he got his Tamiflu on Sunday. He has a nasty cough, sore throat, headache etc, however although he is ill, I have actually seen him worse with a normal cold.

DD is ill at the mo, however NHS Direct said it is unlikely to be SF as her symptoms do not match. It is possible that she has another bug and we just monitor it. She has Tamiflu as well as she has asthma and had flu last year.

TBH DD tested for Influenza A (H1N1) last Autumn, and she was incredibly, incredibly ill then. She was barely conscious for a week and it was a real worry, and took about 6 weeks to get over it. It doesn't compare at all to DP's flu or her illness at the moment.

I have also had DP coughing all over me for a good two weeks now and I am as fit as a fiddle, luckily.

DD's school has about 25 confirmed cases amongst the children and staff, there is info on the school website but no other communication, and certainly no hysteria from the parents thank god.

it makes me wonder just how many people really do have swine flu, impossible to diagnose over the phone surely. The symptoms are that of a cold - the only thing i guess its non seasonal. I have just had a really horrible bug, pretty sure it wasn't swine flu though. Didn't bother the doctor with it, why would i.

Am i the only one who is worried about the amount of tamiflu being bandied around - we do NOT want an anti viral resistant virus, surely the less prescribed the better - i bet the government feel a bit about all the stuff that was handed out as a precaution. Tis madness.

I'm hoping that my DD gets this BEFORE she goes back to school because im worried aboutthe "second wave" of the infection. But it is perfectly possible that people will be re-infected if the virus mutates.

You know how they are on about the amount of deaths we now had with Swineflu....does anyone know how these numbers compare to the number of deaths the ordinary flu brings?

My Dad started with a fluey illness a couple of weeks ago. He wouldn't go to the doctor to begin with ,so hasn't had Tamiflu but he has been really really poorly with it It seems to have gone right down deep into his lungs.I assume it was swine flu as a few people have had it round here.
But I just want to point out that in my (healthy) dad's case it was no joke.

Fairlady - the death rates are tiny so far compared to seasonal flu - its a much milder disease.

Re needing Tamiflu in order to get better - nonsense. Apparently it only reduces symptoms by about 1 day and can have bad side effects itself. Lots of people will have had swine flu and not realised they've had it.

It's going to cause a lot more deaths than ordinary flu, not because it's more dangerous (it is dangerous to different age groups than normal flu is though) but just because far far more people are going to get it. So far it hasn't caused as many deaths as you get in a normal winter with ordinary flu (about 6000 someone said I think?), but if it carries on as it is there's not really any doubt it's going to beat that number .

It will still be a mild illness for most individuals, but on a national scale it's going to be a big public health event. Individuals don't need to panic, but anyone running a hospital must be quite stressed!
