Ok her dd started to be unwell on sunday, it was confirmed being Swine flu..He apparently got over it quickly, and was back at school today ??? Why ???????? The school gave us a letter saying to keep our children at least 7 days or not coming back at all in the case of symptoms ??? It's so inconsiderate for the other children..I know my ds will catch it at one point but would like to avoid it..I can't help myself,I'm paniking..and this cow sent her dd at school because he looked well enough, she has another dd and dh being sick at home with swine flu for god sake.......................

Riven, I know special circumstances apply to some children because they are medically vulnerable - in my dds secondary school when swine flu hit, the kids who are vulnerable to infection were told to stay home. All the other kids were told to carry on as normal and as far as I can see, this is perfectly sensible.

The OP hasn't said that her dd is vulnerable. I'm worried about my asthmatic son, but not so much about my other 2 kids.

Vulnerable children have been advised to stay at home (for at least 8 weeks so far, I think) here too.

Why did you start a AIBU then, if you didn't want people to disagree with you?

YABU ...this whole Swine Flu panicky thing is getting really grinding, in my opnion....

The only time I understand the whole panick thing is, if there are other problems which mean Immunesystem is compromised....but for the rest...man...panicking over it is not acheving anything

I'm so fed up of hearing about swine flu now. There is one child in dd's school of 400+ pupils with swine flu, and because of that the whole town has gone into panic mode. Only 4 children were taken to her nursery class this PM. 4 out of 20+. My sister has refused to meet up with me for another 2 weeks because my child attends the school and therefore must be contagious

Absolutely ridiculous IMO

YABU. As I understand it the current advice from HPA is that when you have no symptoms you can return to normal everyday life.

I am sorry that you are worried but people over reacting like you is why I won't be sending my now fully recovered DD back to nursery until monday which is a shame because she is starting school in september and will only have monday/tuesday at nursery.

BTW I would'nt be surprised if some people kick up a fuss even then.

Riven has a point tHE hysteria is maddening for mothers like her and me.

If our children get Flu never mind Swine Flu they are going to be seriously ill in a high dependancy unit pronto if we are lucky.

i personally am trying not to freak out, i am not keeping my son at home wrapped up in cotton wool but do regularly wake in the middle of the night unable to breathe as i have dreamt we had swine flu locally. The summer hols are a blessing.

Please try and keep it in perspective if you follow basic hygiene guidelines you are doing the best for yourself and your children.

CATCH IT, BIN IT, KILL IT!!!!!

Wow, we're at such an advanced stage of swine flu at our school that everybody's really casual about it - I would say at least half the school has had it by now. I'm just getting over it myself, and for your averagely healthy person it's really not that bad...I've found it to be no worse than a cold really - started feeling ill on Tuesday night and am pretty much back to normal now - it's been the same with everyone I know that's had it. The reason it's all over the papers is that it's a new virus, so nobody's had it therefore nobody has immunity so I guess pretty much everybody will get it at some stage.

Sorry Raindrop - didn't mean to trivialise the risk for kids with other health problems - was just talking about us average joes.

Report
raindroprhyme · 16/07/2009 19:22

no that was my point about the hysteria. You have nothing to panic about most people will have a bad flu and get over it.

i have to make such an effort not to be hysterical (cos i have good bloody reason to be) that i want to slap everyone else.

i am glad you are feeling better.

The school were highly irresponsible giving you a letter saying that children should be kept away for 7 days or not coming back at all - this is not NHS advice, so God knows where they are getting that from - sounds like a bad case of demob happiness, IMO.

And calling someone a cow for not following idiotic advice, is v. unreasonable.

It does make your heart drop every time it says on the news "X person died of swine flu because they had other health problems" and you think "Shut up, BBC! My child has other health problems!"

However, because my DD has been ill such a lot I think that I am more prepared to deal with the possibility of swine flu, if that makes sense, and that is stopping me from getting really anxious.

Alright I'm the cow, my mindees have been all sick this week and I'm worried because last time ds was sick, it lasted for 2 weeks and she was really poorly, it was scary.

Miss Scarlett did you have to take Tamiflu to get better? I was fairly certain dd1 had it (off colour, runny tummy, not v happy for a week then instead of getting better spent 5 days with a temp going to 40 plus and down to 38ish with calprofen, sick, runny nose)When we went to the doc he said as she is getting better without tamiflu it wasn't swine flu.
Dd1 nearly all better now but dd2 has bad excema hayfever and allergies, is only 10 mo and I have MS so I was wondering what to do if either of us got poorly? Do I assume it is just same virus as dd1 or search out tamiflu??
And yes it's driving me mad too. It didn't even occur to me that dd1 had s flu until other people panicked me and I realised she had nearly every symptom! I was more worried it was menninigitis..

Thing is I think you can pass it on before you know you're sick

My Ds was diagnosed with Swine Flu last Friday, I informed the school and that afternoon a letter was sent out to parents.

The letter stated that there was 1 case confirmed (my Ds) and 1 suspected case . They gave out the guidelines , ie send children to school unless they have symptoms etc.

Monday morning my DD comes down with swine flu, I notify the school that she won't be in.

Luckily in this area cases seem to be mild, they appear to be better, but as they break up tomorrow , with the schools backing I have kept them off all week. Sadly my DD has missed her last week at this school as she goes to Middle School from Sept.

I spoke to the school secretary today and asked her how many cases they have, my dc's and the suspected case are the only ones but quite a few parents have kept their children off through worry.

All the schools in our town have at least one case.

I know there may be reasons for keeping children off , if they or their family are high risk, but the thing is you can catch this anywhere.

Sadly a small minority of children will be sent to school with or still getting over an illness, be it swine flu or something else.
