YANBU, I would go and sneeze on the bloody people who have been making you and your friend run back and forth.

Hope your DD is better soon. xx

RenagadeMum · 08/07/2009 20:12

Know what you mean!!!!!
. We were one of the original 'back from Mexico' swine flus. Found out we had it. DH was then told there was no one who could take the swabs so DD1,DD2 and DH had to go to A&E to get the swab. DH ran thru A&E (he may have had it himself!) to get the swab. The staff looked at him like he was mad and finally after 30mins wait found a swab.
Then had to be written up for Tamiflu. Then had to find a chemist to get Tamiflu. The first wouldn't accept the presccription! The second finally did but said the government were stockpiling it.

So that is 1 A&E and 2 chemists he infected!!!!

The Daily Mail woudl have loved it...

Turns out we ddin't have swine flu after all, just a cold!!

So I sympathise, I really hope your DD is OK soon. And help us all if this gets any worse.

My DH got Tamiflu without any stress or bother and it hasn't made him feel sick - swabs have been taken today so will hopefully find out for sure whether it is swine flu or just man flu a bad cold

PacificDogwood · 08/07/2009 20:49

Tamiflu if taken within 48 to 72 hrs of onset of Influeaza symptoms with reduce severity of symptoms and shorten the course of the illness by about 1 day.

It is not a cure all.

One recognised side effect is nausea/vomiting which affects different people to varying extent.

In the whole country Tamiflu collection centres have been set up which are the ONLY places where Tamiflu can be collected from. Community pharmacies/GP surgeries have no stock (in fact we didn't not even have stock for viral swabs when we were still swabbing, had to argue reason with Public Health and then get them courierred (is this a word?) out to surgery, etc etc, what a palaver, you have no idea ). Flu buddy needs patient's ID which has to marry up with faxed special prescription which GP has to have sent beforehand. We cannot prescribe Tamiflu on normal prescription pad.

If sounds your GP was woefully poorly informed. Personally I would consider taking Tamiflu/giving it to own family only depending on how ill they actually are. On the whole this has been a faily mild Flu so far.

Sorry you are having a rubbish time, and hope you are all feeling better soon.

Dilemma, you could not afford me -I am that good!!!
What a horrble time you must have had. Here is my 2p's worth:
High temp itself does not set off convulsions, but fast rise in fever does. Give her regular Paracetamol and/or Ibuprofen 3-4x daily. A lot of kids can be quite perky in the morning and then have a quick slump in the afternoon/early evening. Yes, and plenty of fluids, always a good idea . Yoghurt/ice lollies/jelly/custard all count towards fluid intake and are useful bribes alternatives if you have a reluctant drinker on your hands.
If convulsions were to happen again make sure she is in a safe place, ie on floor or somewhere she cannot fall, remove anything hard/sharp, put her in recovery position once she has stopped. If seizing does not stop after a few minutes call 999. Hope you will not have to.
BTW, a recent study has not found any sign difference between Calpol/Brufen for Kids/both for fever lowering but I like Brufen for my kids.

Riven, as nobody is swabbing anymore, Tamiflu is now offered according to "clinical need", ie if your DD has a flu-like illness, not necessarily proven Swine Flu, and an increased risk which with special needs she may have, she could be considered for Tamiflu. As I said above, it is not a cure-all though, just bear in mind.
Hope she is ok.

TotalChaos · 08/07/2009 21:27

yanbu.

Riven the current advice from my local health protection agency is "antiviral drugs are not recommended for contacts of suspected swine flu cases who have no symptoms, including for at risk groups (attached), as there is no evidence that it will protect children from infection.". Probably because national policy as I understand it, is now to treat cases as they arise rather than aim for containment.

tryingtobemarypoppins · 08/07/2009 21:27

Sorry can someone explain why Tamiflu is even needed if it only shortens the illness by 1 day???

coppola · 08/07/2009 21:31

I have had contact from our paed cardiologist - letter to give to gp so that my dd will get tamiflu as a prophylaxis if she is in direct contact with somebody with swine flu.

seeker · 08/07/2009 21:33

If your child does not have underlying health issues, why on earth would you want to give them tamiflu anyway?

trying, good marketing by Big Pharma ?

Also, worst case scenaria, if we get to the point were there are "100 000 new cases every day" 1 day less of flu will make a significant difference in terms of people returning to work: who will stock shelves in supermarkets/empty bins/work in hospital if everybody is off sick?

There is an unconfirmed case at DS' nursery - DS has a heart valve defect, a suppressed immune system, metabolic ketosis and asthma etc.

I'm seriously hoping, having seen the vast numbers of Is it/Isn't threads on here, that is is a paranoid parent who has a child with a nasty cold. There have been no reported cases in our area and this child has not recently travelled abroad.

Am considering prophylaxsis though, if it is available in this area [roll]

Riven, I hope your DD stays healthy.

TotalChaos · 09/07/2009 07:52

Riven - have you been able to get advice from anyone more specialist at the children's hospital about this? sorry you and marmalade have this to worry about on top of everything else.

My 2 DS s had tamiflu forced on them a few weeks ago when they were still trying to contain it.They and I didn't feel any need for them to take it so we are hanging on to it just i case.Although my dad has just got tamiflu easily , he has been really poorly though.

maybe worth trying to contact the Infection Control nurses at the hospital then Riven?

bumpsoon · 09/07/2009 08:27

I can completely understand riven and marmadukes concerns re swine flu, especially given that the only people who have died in the uk have had 'underlying health issues '. The problem is ,because of confidentiality ,we dont actually know what those health issues were do we or if the swine flu is what actually killed these people ,is that what it says on the death certificates? or is it that these people have had swine flu and it is contributary factor ,as opposed to the actual cause of death .The media is not going to say ,oh these people had life limiting conditions and as a result became really ill ,having swine flu or any cold /type of flu would have had this eefect but wouldnt sell as many papaers
