Michael Jackson Thriller video shown in class to Yr 3!

Feel free to tell me if you think I'm being over protective but I'm really not happy that my son's Yr3 class has been shown the full version of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video this afternoon in school.
The first thing he said to me when he came out of school was 'Are zombies real, mum?'
He keeps mentioning it and saying he didn't like it. He is a bit of a gentle soul - he has acute health needs, is young for his age and doesn't like the 'baddies' in alot of cartoon films.....

What do you think? AIBU to be unhappy that this has been shown to my child at school?

(Have no idea why they watched it either?? btw)

I think it came out in 1982 so I was 8/9. I saw the whole thing at a friends house (it was the thing to see) and didn't find it scary.

However agree with others that if its a 15 cert it shouldn't be shown to under 15s in a school environment.

Looks like it is not rated now, certainly you can buy dvd of the video without a rating on it now so I suppose the teacher has done nothing wrong.

Ratings do change over time and I would be very surprised to find that thriller was rated a 15 now (if it had just ben made IYSWIM), a PG maybe but not a 15.

Teacher has shown a lack of judgement IMO, regardless of the certificate, and WTF show a DVD of MJ ?

Pyrocanthus · 08/07/2009 21:46

I agree with JudyBlume. Why the heck do children need to make sense of Michael Jackson's death? I've talked about the press coverage with my DCs, but don't really feel that it requires the school's input.

However, my year 6 dd worked to a background of Michael Jackson clips on YouTube at school the other day - fair enough, they enjoyed the music and it's a bit of a quiet time for them. They were only allowed to watch a short version of Thriller, incidentally.

She asked to watch it in full with year 4 sister when she got home, and I let them because I knew they wouldn't be bothered by it, but older DD would probably have found it frightening in year 3 (younger one is tough as old boots).

Oooh... I am not sure belligerant fits in with shiney happy Abdab

As I said, I am not sure if I could be happy with the reasons for showing it, unless it was during a music lesson looking at the history of Popular Music videos of course - but I am guessing proably not something Y3 spends much time studying

Just thought I'd become the rude fucker. Trying it out.

It doesn't suit me, does it ?

Incidentally, my DSs are obsessed with talking to me about his face, his colour change. We've had some interesting discussions about why people have plastic surgery.

KingCanuteIAm · 08/07/2009 22:02

Hmm, it kind of makes your bum look... erm... largish, sorry

My dc don't care, it has given me a platform to show some of the music and videos that influenced me growing up but they are not interested beyond sharing musical stuff. I have no interest in going into the legal stuff and we have done plastic surgery to death already being teen/pre teen.

< snurk >

Right, am off to bed now. Have talked FAR too much bollocks

KingCanuteIAm · 08/07/2009 22:07

No such thing

Unless the video has a U rating, school should have asked parents' permission to show it. Children react to things in different ways and the fact that some, or even many children would not be disturbed by the video, does not make it right to show it to all children

ChopsTheDuck · 09/07/2009 12:51

My ds1 would be terrified and have nightmares. But then he still thinks whatever he sees is real. My dts are 4 and loved the video when I showed them it!
Are the school aware of his sensitivity? If he has health needs, etc. isn't it something they should be aware of?
