Feel free to tell me if you think I'm being over protective but I'm really not happy that my son's Yr3 class has been shown the full version of Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' video this afternoon in school.
The first thing he said to me when he came out of school was 'Are zombies real, mum?'
He keeps mentioning it and saying he didn't like it. He is a bit of a gentle soul - he has acute health needs, is young for his age and doesn't like the 'baddies' in alot of cartoon films.....

What do you think? AIBU to be unhappy that this has been shown to my child at school?

(Have no idea why they watched it either?? btw)

This is just the nicest thread I have read all day - everyone agreeing and being reasonable.
Ooh its lovely

Poshpaws · 08/07/2009 18:50

I agree, pagwatch. Debating rather than shouting down.

KingCanuteIAm · 08/07/2009 18:50

Op, out of interest how do you know it was the full version? The werewolf has been mentioned, if he had seen it I would have expected that to be the bit he would have mentioned IYSWIM!

cornsilk · 08/07/2009 18:50

Lol Pag. I can't watch the Evil Dead - it's the voices that get me. I am partial to a cosy night in with a cup of tea and The Omen though.

KingCanuteIAm · 08/07/2009 18:51

I agree too Pag and Posh, nice change

screamingabdab · 08/07/2009 18:52

It's nice when we all get along ....

As I once said to my mum when I was about 5 : "We are not arguing, we are disgusting"

Cornsilk Cerazy. I still can't watch the head bit

(Jaws does have one of the best shots in Cinema history - sheriff sitting on the beach, and the backround rushes away very fast as he realises there's been another attack. Genius)

pagwatch · 08/07/2009 18:53

The first scarey film I ever saw was The Birds. I was so frightened - I must have been about 8 and the scene when the woman has had her eyes pecked out just freaked me out.
I STILL have a thing about eyes and I still can't bear horror.

DD however is really untroubled by most things she sees. I am not sure where that comes from.

screamingabdab · 08/07/2009 18:54

KingCanute FGS don't introduce factual information into the debate

cornsilk · 08/07/2009 18:55

The scene in the birds with the climbing frame is really scary!

smartiejake · 08/07/2009 18:57

I thought the rule was that you were only allowed to show U certificate films in primary school unless parental permission was sought for a higher certificate.

screamingabdab · 08/07/2009 18:57

I have a thing about Werewolves after a fake April Fool's Day report on Nationwide (God, that dates me !).

Before the report, they said all children should leave the room. I was on my own, so of course, didn't. Freaked me out totally. DH remembers the same thing !! (no, he is not my brother

janeite · 08/07/2009 18:59

I do think it's a bit inappropriate for 8 year olds, in class. I watched it with dd2, 12, last week and got a scathing look when I asked her if she was scared. I forget how quickly they become cynical!

Nappyzoneisabeetrootrunner · 08/07/2009 19:03

I was about 8 when i first saw it and it scared the sheet out of me - hands out of coffins in a scarey graveyard and zombies spilling blood out of mouth , evil eyes and oh yes arms falling off. I wouldnt be impressed if my dd saw it at 8 - i still cant watch it now

screamingabdab · 08/07/2009 19:05

Me too nappy. I was about 12

TheOddOne · 08/07/2009 19:37

OMG! I watched the Omen aged about 10 - the Head and the photo prophesies!!! Then i went through the whole phenomena type phase in my early teens (Owl Men, Angels of Mons etc.) - i am of course, completely normal now.

imbored · 08/07/2009 20:34

thriller scares me and im nearly 30 but my youngest is 6 and loves dancing to it

splodge2001 · 08/07/2009 20:43

YABU

It's a great video. Get over it!

Noonki · 08/07/2009 21:12

I was 8 when I first watched it and it scared me to the core! (but kind of in a fun way..where as the omen (aged 6 ) still terrifies.

Thunderduck · 08/07/2009 21:16

I went through that phase too Oddone, though before I was a teen, then during it.
I had a particular interest in Spring Heeled Jack, and Kelpies.

DollyPardonme · 08/07/2009 21:22

well, I wouldn't be happy about this (DS is 7, yr 2). Some 8 yolds will be cool about it, but some will be scared. And frankly who wants to have a conversation about the existential or not status of zombies with a small child?

I also do think the whole "MJ is the Lady Di of our time" thing is a bit naff anyway, on lots of levels.

KingCanuteIAm · 08/07/2009 21:26

Well I thought Lady Di being the Lady Di of our time was a bit naff

screamingabdab · 08/07/2009 21:30

I think Michael Jackson is the lady Di of Elvis's time

FAQinglovely · 08/07/2009 21:31

Well until I reached the bit where someone said it's rated 15 I was going to YABU. - however regardless of how individual children react a 15 should not be shown to a YR3 class in any circumstance.

kalo12 · 08/07/2009 21:35

i remember my nephew watching it when he was about nine, he often tells me how it frightened him. he's now 15 . he wasn't a particularly sensitive boy and was into the usual computer games and tv programmes for that age range. i think its too young and it is scary

KingCanuteIAm · 08/07/2009 21:37

Abdab, now you are showing off
