yanbu, but I have got two fire angel ones (not the lightbulb ones, thought they were, but they're not) and NO idea where to put them. The instructions don't cover a lot of homes and you end up with them going off every time you use the toaster, or being completely ineffectual if there was an actual fire.

So can I seriously get some nice firemen round to tell me where they go?

Many areas certainly you can ask the brigade yesp, they came here and did a full check

before we found out that the occupier before us was Head of the Brigade LOL- was very safe

Jumente, in my last house the fire brigade came out and did a safety check after i asked them, Kent fire service def do this, and they decided that my smoke alarms werent loud enough so took them out and put in the ones they recomend for free and helped us plan an escape route and discuss it with ds who was 6 at the time. also went through other fire safety methods, shutting doors etc with the whole family

I rang my local fire station and asked if they could come round and do a fire safety check for us. When they came they also supplied and fitted 2 smoke alarms free of charge for us.
They are the new ones with a 10 year battery life span, they said when the batteries start to go they will make a bleeping noise and to call them again and they will replace them.

very good service and they even came in a fire engine and let DD sit inside and have a piccy take

i have new smoke alarms that were fitted for me to move in.

Im a leeetle bit gutted though as the fire brigade are coming around to test all the older ones.

Im missing out on a dishy fireman!!

mind you knowing my luck i'd end up with one of Dp's mates. honeslty, when i found out that all his best friends were fireman i was over the moon....till i met them!

As soon as we moved into this house we had the fire brigade come round and do a check for us.

We have fire alarms that are connected to the electrics (with battery backup). I also have an escape ladder.

Fucksticks: Angel smoke alarms are just ordinary ceiling-attached ones - apparently they have an integral battery with a 10-year lifespan and when it runs out the whole unit needs to be replaced. The fire brigade also fitted 2 for us as a free service (West Midlands area)

There are so many ways to get fire alarms fitted for free (local council safety initiatives, fire brigade etc.,) and the fact it has been mandatory to have them fitted in new builds for several years now - I also think landlords have to fit them in their do rental properties too?

They are not that expensive to buy either, there is so little excuse not to have such a valuable life saving device!! I urge anyone who knows someone who doesn't have one, who doesn't know how to get a free one or can't afford on to please, please help them to get one fitted. They really do save lives!

Boy2mam - I doubt it - because what if you forgot to switch on again? They are recommended to be fitted away from kitchen areas - hallways and landings are recommended. So if you haven't got an extractor fan in your kitchen you'll have to have a window open when cooking!!`

Boys2mam, mine has got a hush button that you press if it goes off when you're cooking (which it always does!) which keeps it quiet for 5 minutes I think.

I work for the fire service so know more than I'd like about the aftermath of domestic fires. Even had the blokes round here to check my alarms. You need alarms in every room (except bathroom + kitchen) + test every week. Also watch out for over loaded sockets and dodgy electricals. Get in touch with your local fire service to see if they do home fire safety visits, they will probably be really helpful.

We recently had a check by the fire brigade and they were fantastic. They gave us free fire alarms for the whole house (though we already had shop ones). These last for 10 years and don't need batteries replacing.
