to think that people who buy ready-grated and ready-sliced cheese from the supermarket are nuts?

I mean why would you bother. (Normal exceptions apply - people with disabilities etc who can't grate cheese).

How hard is it to grate cheese? Plus that ready grated stuff must be as dry as a bone.

Plus ready sliced cheese. Why would you now just slice your own cheese? What use are those slices anyway, they are thicker than a pound coin, you would choke on sandwiches made of that.

So expensive as well.

i think it is sort of silly, but now thinking about it, i have bought it instead of going to a shop to have a sandwich made. i think most people that buy it though do so because they can't be arsed to grate cheese.

chefswife · 30/06/2009 05:18

ozziegirly i agree... although i just can't do cheese slices that i think of as 'cheese slices', like Kraft. not cheese that's been sliced. i'd buy that.

Ozziegirly · 30/06/2009 07:02

I now want cheese.

LainyM · 21/01/2022 22:02

I must be nuts I buy grated cheese if on offer (often 2 bags for like £4. The 100% stuff is not dry but there is the type with added extras and yes that is dry! The sliced stuff I buy for burgers but not for sandwiches.

I hate grating cheese and I hate washing the grater too and don't like putting in the dishwasher as cheese one 0f the worst things to get stuck in the dishwasher and there's always bits still sryck in the grater.

Giraffesandbottoms · 21/01/2022 22:03

I have small children snd I cook them meals from scratch but this saves me several minutes in what’s already a bit of a ticking time bomb of a situation! Who cares? Also sliced cheese is much easier for sandwiches etc - I’ve always been shockingly bad at slicing cheese

No, you’re nuts to resurrect A THREAD WHICH IS 13 YEARS OLD for something so massively inconsequential.

ZOMBIE ZOMBIE ZOMBIE

Pinchofnom · 21/01/2022 22:05

I get both, normal vintage cheddar and grated. Grated when I’m rushing my nuts off (often). Agree though that regular cheddar is far nicer

KarmaStar · 21/01/2022 22:08

Yabvu.there are may reasons why some people don't have a choice.
Nasty judgement op.

NarcissistsEyebrows · 21/01/2022 22:16

Lainy I have to know why you revived this thread? It can't have been anywhere near the top of a chat board. Were you searching for threads about cheese? Tell the truth Grin

guardiansofthegalaxychocs · 21/01/2022 22:19

I do! Because I can afford to, I have limited time and it reduces mess (which I have no time to clear up!). Zero regrets about this.

BIWI · 21/01/2022 22:19

THIS IS A ZOMBIE THREAD FROM 2009

FFS. Getorfmyland was a great poster, and she is missed. But there is no need to resurrect her threads from way back when!

I use grated mozzarella in macaroni cheese and in egg muffins. Normal mozzarella doesn't grate...

Sliced cheese is often a good shape for burgers. I'd buy the chilli cheddar slices or the blue cheese slices for a luxury cheeseburger.

I really need a cheese plane but can't find one!

bumblingbovine49 · 21/01/2022 22:33

I buy ready grated cheese as DS who has ASD eats pasta with some sort of sauce and cheese on it every blessed day without fail, he'd have it twice if I let him. I just get so fed up of grating the cheese for it so he has pasta to take for lunch the next day to college while cooking a normal meal for DH and I as well preparing another evening meal for DS ( he has about 4-5 other things he will wait which I cook in rotation for him every evening) that I buy grated sometime. Yes I know I can grate it myself and freeze it ( which I do as well ) but sometimes just grabbing a bag of ready grated cheese and using it on pasta or pasta sauces makes life a bit easier

I prefer the sliced cheese for sandwiches myself, they seem thinner than I can slice myself

carbon60 · 21/01/2022 22:37

@bumptwitknocker

I buy it because I'm lazy, but I was just wandering... what disability takes away the ability to grate cheese?
Try rheumatoid arthritis, that takes away the ability to grate cheese. I also sometimes use instant mash, tough eh.
sanbeiji · 21/01/2022 22:39

I don't each much cheese so a block would go to waste. The slices stuff is a smaller quantity..

Think this is the oldest Zombie thread I’ve ever seen.

For what it’s worth, some people can struggle to grate cheese but still want to be able to prepare meals. Hope we’re less judgemental in 2022 than 2009!

Hankunamatata · 21/01/2022 22:43

Grated is perfect for cooking

HelloFrostyMorning · 21/01/2022 22:44

YABU. 250 grams of cheddar (grated) is no more expensive that a 250 gram block. I get a block and a bag of grated twice a month.

EstherMumsnet · 21/01/2022 22:45

Thanks for the reports. We'll close this thread.

HelloFrostyMorning · 21/01/2022 22:45
