to think that people who buy ready-grated and ready-sliced cheese from the supermarket are nuts?

I mean why would you bother. (Normal exceptions apply - people with disabilities etc who can't grate cheese).

How hard is it to grate cheese? Plus that ready grated stuff must be as dry as a bone.

Plus ready sliced cheese. Why would you now just slice your own cheese? What use are those slices anyway, they are thicker than a pound coin, you would choke on sandwiches made of that.

So expensive as well.

Am mainly a Good Girl now though* Halo and amke stuff from scratch

*broke not choice LMAO

gagamama · 25/06/2009 15:42

Ah, GetOrfMoiLand, you see I don't really like my cheese cold and solid straight out of the fridge, plus you have to involve a knife which could be used to incriminate you in the cheese theft.

I agree with you on the weird plastic outer of liquitabs, too.

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 25/06/2009 15:44

I buy ready sliced edam and gouda - I The kids love it. However I am terribly snobby about cheese - "Is that camembert ripe? Is it pasteurised? It is? Oh, do you not have unpasteurised? Do you have any 'proper' feta, is it made from sheeps' milk?" Snoot snoot. And yet I am strangely drawn to the ready-sliced rubbery end of the market?

GetOrf - lol @ 'the tyranny of ice cube trays'

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2009 15:45

I am the same. Somehow all sense evacuates my head when I am in Sainsburys and instead of buying sensible food I am lured into a leisurely stroll to the exotic food area.

So I come home with some very expensive salted capers and Losely yoghurts but no loo roll, half the rooms in the house are in permagloom because I keep forgetting to buy lightbulbs etc.

Have only bought grated cheese when it was cheaper than a block (500g). However, it was a false ecomony as I seemed to get through more when it was pre-grated than when it was in a block .

However, you can get a lot of things 'pre-' now. I have seen frozen diced onions and frozen rice....

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2009 15:50

I am a yoghurt snob. I only like the Losely ones. They are lovely especially the lemon curd ones.

However I remember ganetting a whole 6 pack of basics versions of petit filous, so my standards can't be that high actually.

I buy ice and liquidtabs as well, I really can't be bothered measuring out laundry liquid, not when I can just toss the tab in with the load.

Freely admit that I have more money than sense and quite like it that way actually .

SpawnChorus · 25/06/2009 15:57

I buy sliced edam and emmental because I really am incapable of slicing them neatly myself. I end up with massively thick chuncks which are no good for e.g. cheese toasties. Is there a tip to slicing slightly bendy cheese?

geogteach · 25/06/2009 15:58

I grate a big block in the food processor and then freeze it too. Absolutely fine for cooking and saves endlessly washing the grater or food processor.

I love those bags Shineon. The ones with the vegetables through them, they're great.

SpawnChorus · 25/06/2009 16:04

Thunderduck - I tried one of them, but it was shit. Maybe I should buy a better one?

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2009 16:08

I used to buy frozen rice but since I have discovered my fail safe microwave rice cooking method (not smug, me) I don't. It leaves more space in the freezer for buy 2 tubs for £3 ice cream

OP posts:
Thunderduck · 25/06/2009 16:08

I'd try another then. Mine works well.

Thunderduck · 25/06/2009 16:10

Could you please share your failsafe microwave rice cooking method with us?

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2009 16:10

Still don't get the ready sliced cheese (defending original OP). Those slices are too bloody thick for anything. You couldn't eat sandwhiches made out of those slices surely, it would be like eating a slice of lino.

I am shit at slicing cheese consistently and neatly. I fully fess up to occasionally buying grated cheese out of sheer laziness though.

GetOrfMoiLand · 25/06/2009 16:14

Yes thunderduck (proud).

75g rice per person, 175ml of boiling water per 75g of rice.

Shove in a bowl. Pour water on top. Add a pinch of salt.

Cover with cling film, stab a few holes in it, cook in microwave on 10 mins on full.

When done put rice in colander and rinse with a full kettle of boiled water. Voila, perfect rice.

It comes out perfect every time even if you have 1 x 75g in the bowl or 6 x 75g. Is failsafe. And I spent years trying loads of other saucepan methods (and years of boil in the bag mush until I found frozen rice)

Cosmosis · 25/06/2009 16:14

grated cheese and sliced cheese v useful when camping. I never buy them otherwise though.

I had no idea you could even buy frozen rice, what's the point of that then???

Grumpyoldcaaaaaaaa · 25/06/2009 16:16

DH tries to grate a shitload large quantity of cheese in the food pocessor at the weekend for his lasagne. God knows what he did, but he ended up with a large, slightly soft ball of cheese, as opposed to a block of cheese. I then had to grate the ball by hand. God, I was exhausted.Oh and washing powder - I buy mine from Makro (wholesaler), so get a gigantosaurus 9.6kilo box of powder
