I dont think it is actually such a bad place/ organisation...fair enough sometimes the Macdonalds service/experience isnt always fantastic but on the whole I dont think its that bad anymore

well I think they are trying their best and dont always deserve the scorn they receive

If your main concern is employment practices and unionisation and such, I really hope you don't shop in Aldi! Far, far worse IMO. And how many of the supermarkets/chain stores/anywhere dominated by part time low paid labour are unionised or give anything more than the minimum allowed by law?

I agree with the OP, McDonalds really have cleaned up their act food wise; burgers are 100% Irish Beef (where I am), nuggets and mcchicken are 100% chicken breast with no fillers, reduced salt and sugar everywhere and so on.
The milkshakes are still packed with sugar and inumerable chemicals, but damn if they don't hit the spot on occasion.....

I do actually boycott a heck of a lot of companies. Nestle is the main one.

ihavenewsockson · 22/06/2009 09:55

turns my stomach.

This is why I finally stopped eating there.
I just can't give them any more of my money when they don't give a donkeys about their employees.

sorry, fixed the link

lostinthecitylover · 22/06/2009 11:15

Am not sure of the connection between Tim Curry and Macd but I must confess to also fancying him.

Made a great pirate in a Muppet movie!!!

pingping · 22/06/2009 11:39

I use to be a manager of a Mcdonalds back when I was young. I must say that the working standards were ok when we worked for a Franchise but once the mcdonalds company brought the store back they found ways to sack and get rid of all previous employees...

I didn't eat in a mcdonalds for a good few years after I left the smell made me vomit but I am known to have a sneaky burger now The chicken Legands are the best

kittycatty · 22/06/2009 11:39

Mcdonalds pay my son MORE than the minimum wage (im on minimum wage and i work for a very large shop chain)

As for them not paying out compensation or whatever in america, why should they? And whats that got to do with the food?

There are alot of companies out there that do a lot worse.
What the hell is wrong with the world when everyone wants/expects compensation!

In my job ive been told if anyone comes in asking for the money from the till give them it! AND i would!

wannaBe · 22/06/2009 11:49

I do think the world is obsessed with compensation.

I also think that we really need to support the causes that are important to us individually, as in reality it's not possible to live an entirely ethical life where no unethical goods ever pass over the threshhold.

oliverboliverbutt · 22/06/2009 12:03

kittycatty he was shot twice while on the job and they were not going to pay him workmans comp!

I don't think you read the article because they weren't robbed - he was helping a female customer that a man was beating up. I guess now you'll say he should have just let the guy get on with it and stay out of it.

They make billions of £££ every year and this minimum wage kid with probably no insurance had over $300,000 of medical debt.
That's why they should pay! FFS!
But whatever, that's HIS problem right?

You better hope your son never gets stabbed there. Methinks you may change your tune if it was your family affected.

And if all you are concerned with is the food (cos really that's all mcdonalds is about )
then here's a good answer - IT'S SHIT!

But I digress... No use trying to convince people who can't be bovvered to look outside their teeny tiny box.

Ivykaty44 · 22/06/2009 12:06

I have just cycled past our local Macdonalds - there was a rat dead on the middle of the cycle/walking path all curled upwards and I did wonder if the rat had perhpas eaten from the macd bins and it had killed him....

bethoo · 22/06/2009 12:08

everytime we go to town i have a big mac meal! it is the only time i eat beef! yummy

Greensleeves · 22/06/2009 12:08

not as bad as this

but seriously, how can anyone defend MacDonalds? They are sheisters on so many levels

and the food is overpriced, overprocessed revolting shit

Kewcumber · 22/06/2009 12:13

on the other hand they do fund the building of family sleeping units at paediatric units. www.rmhc.org.uk/about_us/whoarermhc.php

Gorionine · 22/06/2009 12:15

this is why I do not go to McD

I did see a documentary back home (on the continent) about the women who worked in those toy factories. Most of them could not afford childcare so they were taking the pre school dcs with them at work where they were actually helping the mums. I have this mental image of my dcs working with me for a 10 hours shift, making toys they will never play with. This documentary was on about 15 years ago BTW and maybe things have changed for the better but I still cannot bring myself to eat there!

Greensleeves · 22/06/2009 12:15

tbh I find it even sicker that they are winning people over by involving themselves in humanitarian ventures, especially paediatrics Kew

It's not compassion, it's not social conscience, it's just MARKETING.

evil people some times do "good" things - you have to ask what they are getting out of it?

Stigaloid · 22/06/2009 12:16

i prefer Burger King - flame grilled all the way!

Ivykaty44 · 22/06/2009 12:19

they support the charity, like other large companies

It is about fund raising done by the staff and customers - not actually macdonalds building the houses

Trikken · 22/06/2009 12:32

IMHO if you dont like it, dont go there, as someone lese has already said. Buger King is better, but i wouldnt turn down a maccy D!

TheDevilWearsYFronts · 22/06/2009 12:39

Why get so inflamed about mcdonalds though/ Every large company is unethical.

Do you pick up prescriptions at boots for example, they are far from ethical?

Ivykaty44 · 22/06/2009 12:49

I don't have to eat or use products but cn still comment on them.

I would be happy to eat fish and chips - but not KFC or BK or MacD's as they are not foods that I like. I must admitt the stench from macd;s is the only food shop that I physically object to - hold your nose as you pass

mollyroger · 22/06/2009 12:55

I use macds if i have no other available option - eg very, very rarely. I just don't want to feel I am contributing to their wealth any more.
Partly on ecological grounds, partly on humaniatrian grounds and partly because I hate the way they peddled their crap to my young children.
I don't care how much they have improved the quality of the food - in those days they were advertising happy meals everywhere, as wholesome and fun and it was insidious. When, IN MY PERSONAL OPINION, it was high fat, hi salt, hi sugar shit on a stick. With a crappy toy.

Kewcumber · 22/06/2009 13:46

MacD's fund the whole administration of the charity so that every penny customers and other corporate sponsors give goes directly into buiding the houses/units. They get very little PR out of it (how many of you knew about it?)

I have no problem with anyone trashing/hating MacD's, am not a customer myself. Dislike people trashing charitable acts by companies though as few companies give much to charity - it not exactly encouraging when those that do are despised for it!

DaddyJ · 22/06/2009 13:51

On another thread Justine has just called McD 'wrong' so there

I want to know what they put into the BigMac sauce.
The ingredients are as wholesome as cardboard but that sauce...
