to think that teachers really shouldn't make a judgement of a child on their name alone?

I was speaking with a teacher at a mother and baby group recently and we got to talking about names. When I told her my daughter's name she said 'ooh, every little girl I've taught with that name is lovely', and when she heard my son's name she pulled a face and sucked the air in through her teeth and said 'they're all buggers in my experience'.

I've heard similar things before about boys with the same name as my son, and it upsets me a little that he may be judged by his teachers before he even gets to class. And if he does do something a bit naughty, as all children do, he'll be living up, or rather down, to the low expectations of him.

I don't expect teachers to pass judgement on any name, whether it be a positive or negative judgement. Surely they should see the children as individuals?

aah crossed posts with you PP . have been over there to copy and paste, now have come backt to find you have beat me to it. Now then I must scan again to see if my DC are mentioned on page 1

pranma · 19/06/2009 22:35

years ago it was Wayne and Jason for boys
Darren had its day too the joke was Sharon and Tracy of course but in fact I never met one who wasnt lovely-the difficult girls often had made up names or names with odd spellings I wont give examples of those...

ThePhantomPlopper · 19/06/2009 22:35

I had forgotten what a good read it made LOL.

DS has been named once.
DD not at all.

poopscoop · 19/06/2009 22:40

i have 2 on the good list and one who is annoying!

Chuffinnora · 19/06/2009 22:41

Oh so funny!
Page one
"it really is true that kids with the same name tend to be pretty similar!!!!!

for me Damien has to be the one...

my husband and i are both tecahers and we have been thinking of what names to give our kids when we have them by judging the kids we have already taught.

anyone ever taught the following:

Harvey?
Ruby?

i've taught neither but those are the names we are thinking of... "

Poor puncuation, poor spelling and Harvey and Ruby - well it was posted in 2005, so....

poopscoop · 19/06/2009 22:45

yes, did you see what she wrote further down the thread when she found out jordons boy was called harvey?

CarmenSanDiego · 19/06/2009 22:45

Wow, that thread is really nasty and I've only got a few pages in. I know teachers need to let off steam but saying she knew a Ruby who was 'ugly and scary' is horrible. (And no, none of my DCs are called Ruby but one is on the first page of that thread. And of course I think she's delightful )

Chuffinnora · 19/06/2009 22:54

DD and DS not named yet.
Reassuring to know that a qualified teacher somewhere thinks "Future hooker" when he meets a Shannon.

Better not read any more of that thread.

edam · 19/06/2009 23:01

Oh, OK Seeker, bristles retracted! Would have loved to call ds Taliesin but wasn't quite brave enough - dh and I are both half-Welsh but both grew up in England so didn't think we could carry it off.

scottishmummy · 19/06/2009 23:12

you know what teachers are human with nuances and anecdotes this doesn't mean every teacher is a prejudical heaving mass against your son name

BUT you meet socially and on basis of anecdotal conversation best not to infer too much.the mum was off duty in a baby group

so ease up a bit

clemette · 19/06/2009 23:13

That TES thread does us teachers no favours
But, I suppose I have been guilty of looking at a class list and making assumptions. Misspelt names and hypenated forenames are my own bugbear but I would never say anything out loud! And happily I am frequently wrong.

pointydog · 19/06/2009 23:15

Charlotte - wouldn't make assumption, know a mix
and Chantal - yes, asusmption
Henryvb - yes assumtoion
Tyson - yes
Alicia - no aasumtuoon, mix
Sunset - yes
George - not necessarily
Taliesin - never heard of thsi name
Annabel - not necessarly
Lacey-Rae - yes

angrypixie · 19/06/2009 23:17

I'm a teacher and naming my 3 dc was a nightmare as I had so many associations. I'm sure therefore that I do judge names but I wouldn't be so foolish as to name any!

tallulahbelly · 19/06/2009 23:21

Is his name Simon?

I've never met a nice Simon.

And neither has my DH. Who's not called Simon

scottishmummy · 19/06/2009 23:21

i am not a teacher BUT i do snigger at made up/erroneous spellings

"Princess Tiaamii" -yep perma-tanned mammy dound to be trouble
Rimini - too many cheap med hols.trouble
Shardonnay - lay off the swalley.silly spelling

sheepgomeep · 19/06/2009 23:22

my dd1 is called Shannon
She is one of the brightest children in her year.

I also have a Ciaran and an Elinor

wonder if they are on the list...

ThePhantomPlopper · 19/06/2009 23:23

Princess Tiaamii - is so bloody ridiculous! Even for Jordan.

pointydog · 19/06/2009 23:23

there is no list

tigerdriver · 19/06/2009 23:24

pointy - sorry this is v lazy of me, but what assumption would you make of George (not that I have any particular reason for asking )

I do think this is very worrying though - it's ok to have a bit of an eyebrow raise over a little Brooklyn or whatever, but to be treated in school as a trouble maker etc etc because of your daft deluded parents' name choice is quite surprising.

anyway, what is a George?

sheepgomeep · 19/06/2009 23:28

well thread then sorry whatever

Thunderduck · 19/06/2009 23:29

Kevin. It was always a Kevin who was the class troublemaker when I was a child.

pointydog · 19/06/2009 23:29

I wouldn't make any assumption about george. A variety of people are called George.

It's all just light-hearted chat anyway. Would anyone really form an opinion of a child based on a name and not be preapred to change that opinion based on what the child was actually like?

pointydog · 19/06/2009 23:30

yeah, thunder but we are old now.

AN dalthough some Kevins were Trouble, some were very nice too. Just a little boisterous.

Immigrationofficer · 19/06/2009 23:32

Have namechanged for this as wouldn't want to give away my occupation on here as could be identified in RL...

But us Immigration Officers definitely do make judgements and have a good laugh at children's names. On certain flights, we have been known to have a competition to see who gets the child with the chavviest names...

Our job is quite boring really so it passes the time.....

Generally speaking, the Tallulahs, Annabels and Georginas fly in from places like Nice whereas the Demi-Lees, Summer-Roses and Chardonnays etc are Benidorm.

There are some wicked parents out there though - my all time favourite was the unfortunate 12 year old called "Feral".

Thunderduck · 19/06/2009 23:34

All of the Kevin's I knew were brats. Not at all pleasant.

I don't think I know of any Kevin's now, child Kevin's I mean. It seems to have been a fad in the 80's.
