to be furious that my Dyson has lost its suction?

Ggggrrrrrrr. I have posted a topic in "Good Housekeeping" but would like to rant too if that's allowed. Why oh why has my Dyson lost its suction? "The vacuum cleaner that never loses suction. Ever." Ha, what a joke. This is the second blooming Dyson that has done this to me. It's only 18 months old. I look after it and lavish loads of tlc on it, clean it out when necessary, etc etc. AIBU to expect it to do what the manufacturers and advertisers say it will do? Am I?

Mine also lost suction, but I cured it by rinsing the filters out under the tap, and drying them on the radiator. I think you are supposed to do this every 6 months, but I newver got round to it, hence the loss of suction. Problem is you need to do this 24 hours before you want to use it to give the filters time to dry.

mumof2222222222222222boys · 19/06/2009 11:04

Ours (7 years old) was terrible...but then I gave it lots of tlc, including washing teh filters which were DISGUSTING and pulling all manner of rubbish from under it...and it is like a new Dyson!

LilRedWG · 19/06/2009 11:08

You can get them out to service it. We did this, even though ours was about 7 or eight years old and they replaced EVERYTHING - brushes, electric cable, hose, the lot. It was like a new vacuum and only cost about £55.

Morloth · 19/06/2009 11:24

If it is only 18months old it should still be under warranty? Just give the service department a call. I blew the engine out on mine (because I hadn't read the instructions to clean the internal pad every 3 months). It was just out of warranty and they replaced the engine free of charge.

I was extremely impressed with their customer service.

pickyvic · 19/06/2009 11:46

my dyson is ancient but they still come and fix it - last time they stripped it down completely and replaced loads of parts and it didnt cost much so if its lost its suction get em out! their customer service really is very good. i love steve the dyson man! cant fault them. id have another just for the customer service when they go wrong!

unlike the bloody dishwasher man.... but thats another story...and its not a dyson. if dyson made dishwashers id have one.

SomeGuy · 19/06/2009 12:15

Dysons are notoriously unreliable. Which? only agreed to recommend them when they provided 5 year guarantee.

Would recommend Miele.

Mine did this, washed out the filters as has been suggested but it'd still lost some of the suction... however i have since bought a vax, and that is also supposed to not loose suction- but only 7mths later its broken... apparently its the belt or somethign so i have to get DH to fix it... as its not included in the warranty- how pants is that?? surely opening it to replace a part will void the rest of my 5.5yrs warranty?? I have spent the last week hoovering the house with the nossle part!!

Oh i shouldn't have started this rant!!

clumsymum · 19/06/2009 12:30

Don't understand this, what the hell do you do to it ???

Our dyson is 7 years old, and is FANTASTIC. we have 2 hairy dogs, + DS, so it has a heavy workload, but we have never had it serviced. DH took it apart a while back, and cleaned some of the fluffy gunk stuck inside, but that's all. I only remember once a flood to wash the filter thing.
My cleaning lady bought herself one, cos she was so impressed with ours.

Is yours an upright (like ours), or a pull along job?

We said the other day that it owes us nothing, and come the day it packs-in, we'll buy another.

Oh, one other positive, DS was nearly 3 when we bought it, and loved the instruction manual. He would lay in his cot looking thru it every night for about 4 weeks

GetOrfMoiLand · 19/06/2009 12:34

Oh, I have had Dyson rants on MN before. I bloody hate mine with a passion, the heavy, lego coloured thing. I am not usually anthropomorphic about inanimate objects, but my Dyson is like a short, fat scumbag of a man who sits in my cupboard and never does what I want.

I want to throw it away and get a HOOVER but DP won't let me because he paid for it

Yes, I know I am being completely irrational.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 19/06/2009 12:34

If it'sonly 18 months old it should have come with a 5 year warranty.

Our last one had to be fixed under warranty and they were great, replaced the motor and it was fine. It would still be working but I got Dyson envy and bought the Ball one.

FlappyTheBat · 19/06/2009 12:35

Dyson will come out and repair your dyson, can't remember how much it costs but my friend replaced her dyson when hers lost suction - was ancient and didn't mind buying new one. That one broke and she mentioned it to the guy when he came out to repair new one, he had a look and got it working again so her mum has it now.
Could be wrong but I think they only charged her about £75?

oldraver · 19/06/2009 13:18

Minw has lost some suction but I have a crack in the dust bucket (which has been gaffered) and I noticed a couple of splits in the hose so assumed it was this causing it

I use my friends Miele and it is much better

lilymolly · 19/06/2009 13:28

Just had mine serviced and had several missing parts replaced after 5 years of very hard labour, including dog hairs, cleaning out fires and plaster dust.

Its now back to new and it only cost me £60 from a high street independant electrical repair man.

I am over the moon with it

FlappyTheBat · 19/06/2009 13:29

you can buy replacement parts incl dust bucket which were only about £25 when we replaced ours.

that's what I like about dyson, you can basically rebuild your old machine as long as motor is ok!

FluffyBunnyGoneBad · 19/06/2009 13:30

Mine did this, the hose had split at the bottom. I replaced the hose (£25) and it's fab!

becklespeckle · 19/06/2009 13:33

I LOVE my Dyson, it's now 8 years old and has been totally abused and yet still, it keeps going. I take out cover on it for about £12 a year and Dyson repair/replace anything that needs doing.

It has previously lost suction and, like others, rinsing the filters sorted that out. At only 18 months old it will be under warranty still, if cleaning the filters doesn't work - get them out to look at it!

becklespeckle · 19/06/2009 13:34

Flappy, I've even had the motor replaced on mine!

(and the flex, hose, wheels, brush bar, attachements, drum...)

becklespeckle · 19/06/2009 13:35

...all free under the warranty too...

MadHairDay · 19/06/2009 14:14

Oh I hated my dysons too, I had two as I thought the first one must have been a one off crap one, they both lost suction v quickly. I have since bought a miele and am converted for life, sooooo much better suction, easier to clean without all the faff, I heartily recommend.

Nekabu · 19/06/2009 15:57

Wash the filter. Each time mine starts to lose suction I do that (and I've replaced them once too) and that fixes it.

brendaAndEddie · 19/06/2009 15:58

you need to take it apart, clean the filters adn unblock things
its user errro i am afraid

MummyDragon · 19/06/2009 17:31

Hhhmm. User error, I love it - probably true though! I will search and see if there's an extra flap or something that I haven't noticed previously. I do clean it out every month or so, wash the filter, etc etc, which is why I am so cross with it. I will definitely give the Dyson helpline a call though - could do with some good customer service instead of the rubbish I seem to receive from BT, Sky etc ...

John Lewis' customer service is excellent, btw

melmog · 19/06/2009 17:38

Hope you're right, just about to ring John Lewis to see why my lovely new bed linen didn't arrive today then.

benfmsmum · 19/06/2009 17:38

Strange this thread is on here today as I've just taken my dyson apart cos its lost a bit of suction and was dropping more dirt than it was picking up!!

How do you get the filter out though?? I have a grey and green upright one if that helps anyone!! I've never changed/washed the filter and its been abused lately after having building work done in the house!
