To wonder why people are still so woefully misinformed?

We now have access to more information than any previous generation. An entire reference library is available at the click of a mouse, public libraries were still free last time I checked, and general reference books are readily available and comparatively cheap.

Why then is the apparent standard of general knowledge and informed opinion amongst many people in Britain [especially the younger generations] so abysmal?

Lupus, I've just actually looked at that link. What a very weird thing to link to, should you want to demonstrate "parody"

I think you might be right about Frank.

LovelyTinOfSpam · 14/06/2009 21:47

ROFL I didn't even bother looking at the link...

Off to ogle frank now.

makipuppy · 14/06/2009 21:49

Lovelytinofspam it had something to do with the ant seeing two dimensions, but actually being subject to three, to explain how we, as giants, can see the ant in 3D but ourselves cannot see our fourth dimension. So we think we're traveling in a straight line forever, although we're actually bound by the curvature of the Earth. That's right where the chocolate came in to save the day. I think it was because I originally asked why I couldn't go in a straight line for infinity and he thought it was an actual question rather than a plea for help

Yesterday he explained the internet. Apparently it's not really even called the wibbly wobbly web like I thought and it can't actually fall over.

Lucia39 · 14/06/2009 21:53

OK this is a "mums" website but does it have to revolve solely around the minutiae of childbearing and rearing?

There are several boards on MN that offer something a little "meatier" e.g. the news, philosophy and religion, and education. It therefore follows that the site administrators recognise there is an outlet for more serious discussion. Why then do threads that deal with anything remotely controverial or thought-provoking end up in slanging matches, name calling, and other puerilities?

If these boards reflect what some parents are like in the "real" world - small wonder that we have so many gobshite kids to deal with in school every day!

ROFL maki now you are taking the pee with your wibbly wobbly web! I have a lovely picture of you and DH at home 50s style, him sporting a huge tache and you a deferential posture, and after dinner every day he treats you to another lecture on "how things work", while you clasp your wee hands in rapt awe

makipuppy · 14/06/2009 22:00

Spam, the best evenings are Thursdays, conducted entirely in Latin.

I still beat his sorry ass at scrabble though.

Quattrocento · 14/06/2009 22:03

Lucia just likes a ruck. Feel that way sometimes myself. Like now, when I have heard F major 22 times.

Why not have a section called FIGHT CLUB where MNers looking for a brawl can post?

ThisIsJustATribute · 14/06/2009 22:04

Lucia - you're on the wrong forum love.

The reason i love MN is that it has very intelligent women on it - mostly mums (i think you think those two words are a contradictory of terms).

Even if i disagree with their politics / child rearing / musical taste - at least they give a good debate.

Trikken · 14/06/2009 22:04

which mostly starts with you as it seems Lucia, I've a few of your threads now which have caused slanging matches and other puerilties as you put it.

MaryMotherOfCheeses · 14/06/2009 22:04

"Do not feed the ruckers" should be new MN policy.

Tortington · 14/06/2009 22:06

would that be hairy handed ruckers

LovelyTinOfSpam · 14/06/2009 22:06

maki maybe you should invite lucia round one thursday?

& ROFL @ lucia "WTF mum website and every bastard talking about children! Who'd a thunk it? Although there are many many loads of topics and threads not about children, I'll give you that. But still am utterly disgusted, not quite disgusted enough to leave, mind"

Lucia39 · 14/06/2009 22:07

Trikken: I didn't start the slanging matches though! I left that to others who obviously have to resort to abuse because their critical thinking skills are non-existent!

OP posts:
GColdtimer · 14/06/2009 22:10

quattro, love the idea of a MN Fight Club

GColdtimer · 14/06/2009 22:13

Lucia, "it's not a "parody" it's a paraphrase! You appear to be providing evidence to prove my point" was a bit rude don't you think? Even with the passive aggressive at the end.

Not that i want to get into a "she started it" debate.

Trikken · 14/06/2009 22:13

It was because of you tho, dont you think that is as bad? Y set up a topic if its going to be so contrivertial and obviously cause slanging matches?

Who are you to say other people have no critical thinking skills? surely it is because you have offended them in such a way that they behave like this?

HelloBeastie · 14/06/2009 22:14

But you didn't really ask a question, did you? You made an assumption (that people are generally ill-informed) and then asked us to justify your statement.

There is a word for this type of argument, if I knew more about philosophy/logic I might know what the word was. But sadly it bores the pants off me, so what can you do?

MachuPicchu · 14/06/2009 22:17

I'm sorry to bring up other threads but Lucia you have been told time and again that your posting manner gets peoples' backs up. Perhaps you don't care, perhaps that's what you want, or perhaps you think it's not important, but even on an internet forum it really does matter how you word things. It's not about pussy-footing around issues etc, it's about thinking about your audience and putting your point across in a way that is conducive to discussion. It's called communication.

Lucia39 · 14/06/2009 22:17

MaryMotherOfCheeses: The reason I gave a link to an example of a parody was because several posters appeared to be labouring under a misapprehension!

LupusinaLlamasuit: "But now I know you're a retired 67 year old male local history nutter with a pompous writing style." That you requested to have this comment removed indicates even you realised how stupid it was. You can't know anything about me! All you can do is make assumptions.

knockedgymnast · 14/06/2009 22:18

lucia said 'There are several boards on MN that offer something a little "meatier" e.g. the news, philosophy and religion, and education'

Then why didn't you post this on the above said threads you mentioned???

If you talked about nappy changing on the philosophy thread, you'd probably get the same result

LovelyTinOfSpam · 14/06/2009 22:18

Oh don't everyone bother getting het up with silly lucia.

Come round to maki's with me instead, we can listen to her moustachioed DH tell us all about interdimensional ants, and the history of the internet and WWW, with sandwiches and questions to follow.

If everyone is really lucky I will give a quick talk on the workings of the internal combustion engine (with slides).

LupusinaLlamasuit · 14/06/2009 22:19

Yes, it was stupid. I apologise.

BitOfFun · 14/06/2009 22:19

Are you like this at work Lucia?

MachuPicchu · 14/06/2009 22:20

I have a feeling that Lucia is a sociology/RE/critical thinking teacher who is testing her lesson themes on MNers.

Or perhaps a student of the above practising for exams.

makipuppy · 14/06/2009 22:20

Lucia, I think we're doing the best we can to flesh out your rather threadbare argument.

Spam - DP calls this fine forum moaningminniesnet so they'd be sure to hit it off. I'll stick the baby in its perambulator and get myself off to bingo..
